Stuck in Snow

I am looking to purchase a used 4 x 4 as a second car mainly due to the fact i live up a very steep half mile lane and thanks to the snow we have had for the last two winters was impossible to get up and down it. Looked at a Freelander but put off by bad reports and the Suzuki Grand Vitara which also can be switched to permanent 4 wheel drive. Not sure about Crossovers like the Rav 4 and Ford Kuga how good they actually are in these sort of conditions. Any suggestions ??? Thanks. Read more

Last year during the worst of the snow I havd to drive to and from work. 75 mile round trip.

I recall one icy winter's day down a untreated B road I passed a lovely dark blue newish Rav4 on very low profile wheels shod with expensive looking rubber. It was on a sharp bend and the Rav 4 was on it's side in a ditch at the time. ...

If you like the A3, a mechanically identical VW Golf will be cheaper, and an equivalent Skoda or SEAT even more so.

A diesel will give you similar or better fuel economy, but unless your annual mileage is over about 15,000, consider a petrol: it may use more fuel but it'll cost you less in the first place, even buying used.

Hi all,

I acquired a 2004 Volvo V40 a week ago. The previous owner had, in good faith, paid Volvo to look at (and supposedly repair) a ticking indicator switch before selling me the car. The Volvo dealership charged him £130 for a new relay switch - he paid this and I have the receipt. At the time I got the car from him (he was emigrating the next day! - I know and trust him, so I know this to be true!!) the ticking was much less than on my first test drive, but nonetheless after every use of the indicator, for a few seconds. As he had done his best in good faith, I undertook to take up the problem with Volvo.... Read more

I agree this will come down to good will.

The dealer works on the car, not the owner....

Can anyone tell me if it is safe to use a suction oil extraactor on this engine with its commmon filler /dipstick? When I push the dipstick in there is a feeling of resistance after about 20cm before it goes the rest of the way down. Will I cause damage on this engine if I push the tube in here - it's not like my other vehicles where the di[pstick just goes down a tube? The car is too low to the ground to do a traditional oil change easily and I like to change the oil on my cars at 6k and going for a full service at a good independent garage at the specified 18k. Quite often the first 2 or 3 uses of the clutch each day result in a vibration / shudder which is quite significant. After 2 or 3 uses everything is okay and back to normal; light pedal action , easy to select gears, no slipping...

My guess is that the cause is due to condensation forming overnight and once this is 'dried' off it is no longer an issue - am I on the right track?

Thank you in advance. Read more

Hi

Over the last couple of days i have noticed a crackling/buzzing sound from the dash area at 2000rpm. This is not speed related as happens in every gear at 2000rpm.

I notice I can accelerate through it or simply ease off the accelerator and the noise disappears. I also notice it is only evident When firmly pressing down on the accelerator and it's ok when gently accelerating up to 2000rpm.

2 days ago I put some redex in the car. Is this just a coincidence?

Up until now, the car appears to be fine otherwise and no warning lights are on.
