Battery conditioner or plain old battery charger? - Mutton Geoff

I've recently bought a classic car and don't plan to take it on winter roads. I've been looking at one of those battery conditioner/chargers (CTEK make a range) and a search here reveals nothing.

Any experience/advice about these things? I thought I could just bung my 30 year old basic charger on from time to time but it could be I am behind the times. These new fangled boxes are £60 upwards though so I wondered if there was any benefit to having a proper monitored trickle charger hooked up all the time in case I wake up one sunny dry morning and fancy a blast?

You can buy solar powered trickle chargers reasonably cheaply, they work vey well, all you need is a window in your garage to site the solar panel. Doesn't need sunshine, just light!
