WHEN STANDSTILL MY GOLF ENGINE STARTS SHAKING BUT WILL STOP IF I TURN THE AIRCON ON USUALLY. ANY IDEA? Read more
Morning all
I'm pretty sure the thrust bearing has gone on my car. It drives and changes gear ok but when the clutch is pressed to change gear it squeals and there is a smell of burning.... Read more
I doubt there's a definitive answer here. It could limp on for the necessary few weeks or it could disintegrate completely tomorrow. In my experience of terminal release bearing problems, sooner rather than later is more likely.
You can help matters by performing clutchless changes where possible (i.e. once it's moving). Presumably if you're trying to avoid changing the bearing before getting rid, the synchromesh cones don't owe you anything either :-)
I have a repair kit for the door lock mechanism of my seat leon and was wondering whether I can remove the key barrel without having to remove the inner door panel.
Any suggestions? Read more
I have a 6 year old Golf GTI. One of the engine mounting bolts has just sheared off at great expense to me. It has a full dealer service history. The only way I can think of this happening is that when I had the timing belt changed a few months ago. Is the engine removed from the car when the timing belt is changed? If this is the case I think there is a strong possibility they have over tightened the bolt which has lead to it shearing off. Your help please. Read more
Well done - it's a rare event when a dealer will admit to a problem of his own making and put it right. I give all credit to him.
It's also satisfying to see that Forums such as this excellent one can be used to achieve worthwhile results for agrieved consumers. As a generality, vehicle makers and dealers seem to be oblivious to the Internet - ignoring the fact that we can all now compare experiences, faults and their resolution. This will cost them dear in the long run and I suspect the Japanese makers are more aware of this than many others and are thus more open with their problems....
Hi,
My 56 plate Focus has just had the turbo replaced due to a knackered shaft which was causing it to burn lots of oil through the exhaust system.... Read more
Yes, DPFs will struggle with oil-don't forget, oil is designed to resist oxidation. The partially burned oil will be harder to oxidise than soot. I've heard conflicting reports about whether reverse flushing a dPF will clear it. Some people have reported success. Otherwise, that looks like a good price for a cat/DPF kit.
Ok, here's the scenario: Join M56 behind a small rigid axle (18 tonne max) truck. Truck is trundling along at 40mph. Overtaking this obstruction is now difficult because of the large differential in speed between the truck and all other traffic. All the other traffic-including the big 44 tonne artics were overtaking. This effectively reduced a busy motorway to one lane. I know there's no minimum enforceable speed limit on motorways but I feel 40mph is unreasonable.
I've a feeling that the driver has a fuel economy bonus to meet which is set by his haulage company. As such, I've half a mind to write to them under the 'how's my driving?' offer. Am I being unfair? Read more
I agree inexperience is inexperience, i feel someone learning to drive at 27 has just the same level of ability as a 17 year old. I also feel if you just bumped it to 21 it'd go from the group of 18 year old plebs who crash a Saxo into a lamp post on drugs into the batch of 22 year old plebs who crash a Saxo into a lamp post on drugs. My point is with all the stuff the Government puts out of how untrustworthy teenagers are behind the wheel, the pseudo scientists with their "in teenage years your ability to make proper decisions isnt yet fully formed" stuff and insurance companies all less than keen to have teenagers as customers that its surprising the age wasnt raised some time ago. I dont think it should be, i think practically it'll make little difference. In America you can get a learners permit at 15, in Australia i believe they start at 16, in fact its 18ish in most countries so its not like we're drastically younger or that much different to anywhere else really.
The only area where it sort of makes some sense i suppose is that although a 27 year old learner has no more/less ability than a 17 year old (in fact many youngsters have perfect ability in controlling a car) its the attitude, mentality and decision making which does change as you get slightly older. Confidence as well. When i stalled at the lights in a learner car at 17 i absolutely fell apart, but ive met people who started lessons in their 20s and had alot more confidence and were much calmer and it wasnt as much of an issue for them....

I have checked that and the problem seems to be below the gearstick. Could this be return spring and bush?

When i got my 3.3 2003 limited xs it has a whining, which got higher the faster then engine revved--but it didn't really bother me--but got the engine management light on today--and got the code p0420--
now done some searching and its to do with emmision or fumes or cat etc...now i have also found this.....
Had the same problem took forever to find where the whinning was coming from. Look under the middle of the car while running and listen for a whine while someone else eccelrates it. There is a plastic 3 ball looking thing that has a vacumm in it that helps with pressure. Mine was shrunken from heat and therefore leaked its called a Vac Harness and it was 8.00 from the dealer. part # was 4431325 hope this helps good luck.
Im no expert but they could be linked? any one else have any ideas?

check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required. Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady). Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary Replace the catalytic converter One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

Any idea how to fix
