A friend of mine has bought the car in the photo below but will not tell us what it is yet (for another 7 weeks until he's back from working in Singapore). I know nothing about it apart from that it will be pretty special - he says it's his "best" yet and he's owned a Cobra, a Jensen Interceptor, 240Zs, TVR Cerbera etc etc.

Any ideas would be gratefully received!... Read more

My Previa experiences vibration, possibly grinding, on turning right. It is at the front on the near side and much more obvious to the front passenger than to the driver. It occurs with even a slight movement of the wheel to the right, and not at all when straight or turning left, and it seems to be related to wheel (not engine) speed. It feels a bit like something rubbing the wheel, but I cannot find any evidence of that.

Can anyone suggest what might be the cause and what action I should take?... Read more

Lift the offending corner clear on a jack and give the wheel a spin, is it a bit rough?
A damaged wheel bearing can give noise when turning in one direction as the conical bearing loads up differently with direction, and may be a bit graunchy under no load. It will be a definite grumble, not to be confused with a bit of brake pad drag.

Second service coming up for this car, so about to enter warranty year 3.

Dealer service is expensive, independent garage less so. The independent in question states that getting a service done there will not affect the warranty.... Read more

I seem to recall this issue cropping up a while back and that motor manufactures were no longer allowed to void warranties due to servicing with OEM parts by a competent third party

This is correct, however sometimes some manufacturers or some dealers may be obstructive & look at the servicing conditions with a veiw to negating any warranty liability....

Looking at buying a replacement [diesel or petrol] for my 1st generation supercharged MCS. Can you advise on:

1, (a) Would metallic paint finish add / detract from a future resale value (b) How does it compare to conventional finish for repairs etc?... Read more

You still have to consider residuals even with a new car - my understanding is that MINI is amongst the best.

Yes, I know , almost treason to admit, BUT... the local major roadworks are running efficiently ;

These being the Henlys Corner ( junction of North Circular, A1 and A598 Finchley Road ) improvements here in North London . This is just down from J2 of the M1 , a pretty major junction. and a snarl up since the very long overdue improvements began in Feb, scheduled for finish in December this year .... Read more

If roadworks cause a delay that was long enough to mean that I could have the day off work, then that would be good. Otherwise they are a pain!

The position of the wing mirrors in my Polo are controlled by an electronic switch on the driver's side. The other day the switch just stopped working completely when I was trying to move the position of the left mirror the electronic switch stopped working. I tried to move the right mirror and that had stopped working too. So now I can't change the position of either mirror. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can give me suggestions as to what this fault is, how to fix it or how much it should cost to get it fixed at a garage. Many thanks. SCJ. Read more
