I have been given a Zafira 1.8 hire car for a business trip for a couple of weeks. Can anyone tell me what the tyre pressures should be for this car. Also, I cannot get any reasonable volume when using my iPod through the Aux socket. I have adjusted the Aux input volume to max and the iPod output to max. However, I still can't achieve a normal listening level. Unfortunately, although the car is new, the handbook is not in the car. Read more

Thanks all. Got the tyres up to around 33 and things feel ok. Got myself an iPod dock from the Pound Shop for, you guessed it, a pound. The higher line output has helped a lot.

I seem to have a problem with the temp light and stop lamp coming on when the temprature reaches 90 degrees.

The car is not pressurising and it is not over heating.... Read more

" I have changed both the sender units although when I replaced the one on the side of the head no water came out "

The sensor has to be in contact with the coolant to pick up the correct temperature. I suspect you either have air at this point in the engine or the hole is blocked with debris.
Remove the sensor & poke some wire in to clear any obstruction. If no coolant flows remove the header cap & add coolant until is does. Replace the sensor & hopefully should be fixed.

Hello,

Is changing the rear/ lower engine mount on my laguna easy ? And does anyone have a step by step guide as money is tight and cant afford to use a garage. I am a fair diy mechanic with plenty of tools.... Read more

Van not often used so battery out for long periods - but reconnected battery after some weeks and both headlights came on regardless of ingition being turned on light switch on etc. Headlamp relay clicking in as soon as battery connected it seems. If the two headlamp fuses are removed lights go off but relay still kicking in.

Might be relay but before I track one down to try wondering if anyone has had this problem and found the solution.... Read more

Check for wiring damage by mice/rats etc. Seen this type of thing before in Germany.

I recently had some work done on my car by a main Citroen dealership to cure a knocking noise at the front when going over uneven ground. They diagnosed it as worn suspension ball joints. The work was done and I paid up, but the car is no different. I'm taking it back today; doubtless they will argue that even though the problem may not be cured, in their opinion it needed new suspension joints anyway. My argument is that I just wanted the problem fixed, and I've paid for something that didn't do that. I can envisage a scenario where they take the car in, find something else which needs replacing, do the work, but then they refuse to reduce the cost by the amount I spent before (or perhaps even a refund if it didn't cost as much). I imagine they would refuse to let me have the key to my car, so am I legally entitled to use my spare key to drive the car home ...is this tantamount to stealing my own car? Doubtless I could probably expect a summons for the cost of the new work, but I would fight it on the above basis. Read more

Great joke! - but it's sad that the reason it's funny is that it's all too commonly the truth.

Hey guys,

I have a 2008 PASSAT B6 1.9TDI (3C2) that I imported to Ireland from the UK recently. It only came with one key/fob so I'm thinking it would be much easier to get a spare now while I have the original key.... Read more

Worst part of the drive is getting down England. Driving is a delight over there with large empty dual carriageways. The Weymouth to St Malo fastcats stop at Channel Isles and so no real benefit. Similarly the Portsmouth St Malo is overnight and tediously slow going round Cherbourg. Tunnel means driving S.E. to then drive S.W. Best so far is Portsmouth Caen 7am sail and there by afternoon. One pundit suggested Hull Zeebrugge, then thrash across France. At first sight this appeals as zero traffic to Hull but full overnight ferry and just can't sleep on them. Flying Leeds to Rennes might be a better use of time.. Any bright ideas? Read more

I guess I must have been unlucky with the timings. What really gripped me was the fact that I had a booking on a particular crossing. They only sell so many tickets, so why was I bumped?

Booking in on the outward leg was perfect, sadly, the trip down to the terminus was dreadful...M1 roadworks and accidents (and so many cars broken down - suspect overheating), M25 congestion. Six hours to cover 250 odd miles.

For the big brands in car stereos it is usually possible to to obtain a harness to adapt the controls on the car to the manufacturer's inputs, saving you all that tedious mucking about working out which wire does what. Also, in many cases, some inline logic is required to adapt the signalling.

For example, here's a Sony / Vectra one: "http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-Vectra-Stalk-Steering-Control-Adaptor-Sony-/250615227263"

Your garage = idiots.

When you operate the switch can you hear any noises? Yes - it's a mechanical fault - No it's electrical....
