Hi
After much deliberation, I have shortlisted an X5 and VW Touareg. Having test driven both and read numerous reviews, I am now undecided on which to choose as both were fantastic and have individual benefits/drawbacks.... Read more
Fair enough - Parkers ought to know: but I wonder where What Car gets its figures for residual value after 3 years from.
I am getting a spasmodic strange noise from within my 08 registered
1.8 Design. It is a noise that can only be described as a sudden load
'wooomph' which sound like all the vents have suddenly closed and
changed the air pressure in the car. There is no effect on the driving
of the car and no obvious event that causes it. It has happened twice
in the last couple of months. It happens at speed 50-70 mph. It is
most disconcerting when it happens. No warning lights no loss of
power. nothing. b***** frightening. Main Dealer not heard of it and
has no idea. Anybody experienced it or has any idea what it is? Read more
Is it an Irish import?
Which are the best tyres for me driving 5000 miles a year? Read more
For 5k in a low powered car it makes little difference. You can probably get Toyos or Vredesteins for about £35 each and they are as good as any mid priced tyre.
Has anyone ever frightened the living daylights out of themselves whilst driving? I ask because the rain is hammering down here and I have been whizzing round in the Celica this morning and experienced a little...ahem...sideways velocity when taking a roundabout. The Mazda doesn't do this and I had to try very hard to make my previous car 'slip' as well. I didn't frighten myself so much as Mr Bobbin.
I wasn't afraid of driving in the snow over these past bad winters; it's just another condition to tackle, and rain doesn't bother me, but I did once petrify myself taking the M56-M53 sliproad far too quickly (never driven it before, been driving about 2 months, did not know it was that big a curve!!)... On business in South Wales. Sun low to front, motoring along little back road. Road is wet and sun is reflecting off surface.
Didn't see junction sign for crossroads until the last possible moment, the road markings were invisible due to the reflections. Foot to brake produced four locked wheels instantly (aha, surface is both wet and worn to a mirror-smooth polish)....

I just had mine done with the MOT and service at Kwik Fit and all three came in at £190. Think it's £49 for just the aircon. They've done a decent job - it works, it's cold!

Some really useful tips from Jack Hargreaves and the team. If ever your toilet roll goes 'out of sync' ie the perforations of sheet one and two of the double-sided don't match, just take the top one and roll it back over the roll and they will meet. Others? Read more
They once published a brilliant suggestion of how to save money on a personalised plate some years ago which involved changing your name by deed poll.

I have owned this car from new, and it has full service history ( first 3 years vw dealer), and it has done 69k. After discovering blisters to the front wing and both rear arches, I took my golf to the main dealer to see about repairs under the 10 year warrenty. They accepted the front wing was through corrosion, and offered me 70% towards the cost of repair, even though the warrenty is supposed to cover this! There excuse was had it been serviced at vw, they would have noticed the covering under the wheel arch was rubbing against the inner arch and therefore fixed it. They said the rear arches was due to stone chips. After many hours getting views from different paint shops they all basically came up with the same theory, that the car had not been prepared properly before painting at the factory and it had now started to come through. I paid £150.00 for a report from a company called PVWi 2010 who confirmed the blistering was down to zinc inclusions. These cannot be found at any service, and are not the fault of the owner by any form of neglect, they just take a long time to appear. After trailing through many websites and forums I have discovered that VW and Audi accept these zinc inclusions and have repaired many of their cars under warrenty. So why, are not every vw or audi that has these being repaired ? Anybody out there help? Read more
You are going down a very expensive road it has already cost you much time and a considerable amount of money on a meaningless report the money would have be better spent towards the repair and the longer you leave it the worse the rust will get.,
The 70% is meaningless the important figure is how much you will have to pay it maybe that the 30% you have to pay VW is more than the cost of the total job at an independant bodyshop after all its an old car not serviced by VW they have had no chance to do the routine body checks your on a hiding to nothing .

Damn you unthrottled; overfuelling was my next guess. But I couldn't necessarily have described how. :-P
