Yes, I know , almost treason to admit, BUT... the local major roadworks are running efficiently ;

These being the Henlys Corner ( junction of North Circular, A1 and A598 Finchley Road ) improvements here in North London . This is just down from J2 of the M1 , a pretty major junction. and a snarl up since the very long overdue improvements began in Feb, scheduled for finish in December this year .

I have only been crossing on a bicycle , going across the North Circ on the Finchley road , almost smug at the misery of drivers as they are stuck there while I zip along unhindered.

However , I can report that works are proceeding at the rate of knots and most nights as I've passed at around 7.30 pm there are men still working. Tonight , I went through at 10 pm and there were full scale works carrying on, planers, diggers and dozens of men milling around under arc lights. The Finchley Road ( North South route neatly bisecting the junction ) was solid for over half a mile going north, a good 25 min delay as the traffic was down to a lane , but again to their credit, two new slip roads just created and surfaced and bypassing the junction have been opened to traffic early, without full markings / lights, and they have helped tremendously to reduce traffic . There appears to have been a bout of common sense as the slip roads are suddenly just open and we can reap the benefit of the extra capacity immediately.

At this rate I can see the works finishing well ahead of the December schedule - well done to all at the council / TFL ( I have nothing to do with either )

However, what this junction was crying for was the tunneling of the North circ for about a quarter mile , so it needn't stop when it meets the A1 going West or again at the Finchley road. This would have made a straight run from Wood Green to Hangar Lane , Henlys corner being the only stop, but I suppose this is asking too much

Hello Motorprop, tunnelling is an expensive option, especially in a built up area. The cheapest way is to 'cut and cover'. That is dig a huge hole, put the road in, build retaining walls and a roof. Then cover it again and probably put another road on top at ground level. I admit it would definitely improve traffic flow but the cost of construction, not to mention the possible undermining or disturbance to the foundations of existing buildings, sewers etc, would be very high. We had similar improvements to a major interchange last year. Not by the council, but by Balfour Beatty, and they were very quick and efficient. I have no connection with either the council or Balfour Beatty. I am just pleased the council chose a good private contractor instead of their own works department, who would struggle to build a dog kennel. Cheers Concrete

obviously tunneling is pricey, but cut n cover is possible there , and it's only for 400 metres - and the daily constant jam on the North Circ heading West is easily a mile all day long , that's even more expensive

Hello Motorprop, take your point, someone needs to do a study. The wife comes from Southgate so I knew that area quite well, while courting etc, but many, many moons ago. That junction has always been a headache. Now safely ensconsed much further North where driving is not such a chore. I did post a thread a while ago about the cost of traffic holdups at the dartford crossing as opposed to the revenue collection which causes the holdups, but no one was able to break it down into pounds and pence, the same situation exists here. Like most things it will come down to money in the end. Cheers Concrete

These works are near where I live. You must be one of the cyclists that I see who "zip along unhindered."often because they are taking no notice whatsoever of the colour of the traffic lights.

However you are quite right. The fundamental problem of Henlys Corner is that two busy A-roads cross each other. These works won't make the congestion any easier, but looking at the plans,they will make the crossing safer.

Only the suicidal would dice with the North Circ lights , especially on a bicycle. Today I drove across around 3.30 pm - wished I was back on bike , can cycle safely inside the coned off lane right up to the lights.

Fact - only buy a tankful of fuel a month , used to be weekly or every 10 days. Only drive if carrying the wife / baby or heavy materials.

If roadworks cause a delay that was long enough to mean that I could have the day off work, then that would be good. Otherwise they are a pain!
