I wonder if you know of any way to work out how much per week/month/year poor road surfaces cost the average car user. I haven't had any noticeable damage...yet...but worry that one more sunken manhole cover will mean I have to pay hundreds in repairs. (I heard a taxi driver say once that he had to get new tyres every month and was forever having his taxi mended; got me a bit worried).

I've been using the bus to get to/from work for the past 6 months purely to save the damage to my car (and there's the added advantage that it's my little bit for the environment), but even with a 3-monthly pass it works out at the same as the cost of petrol so there's no money saving there. I'm trying to decide whether the hassle of not being able to come and go as I please (buses are once an hour so I spend a lot of time hanging around) is worth it. Are all the lumps and bumps in the road causing as much damage as they sound like they are? Is using the bus worth a few extra pence per day? ... Read more

Thank you, thank you, thank you - really helped me to weigh it all up and put it in perspective.

Sounds like I've been worrying about nothing, because my suspension as far as I know is fine and would probably have been knackered by now if it was going to be, so not like I have to worry about it happening tomorrow. I'll just put it down to wear and tear if it does happen, and get it sorted then. ...

I bought this car last year and now doing my first oil/filter change. The oil filter system has been modified to accept a more modern filter - probably around 1970's and I think fitted to British Leyland cars of that era. The filter I have removed is a "Halfords HOF209". Does anyone know - is this filter still available and if so where from? Read more

I assume you have sorted out your filter by now but a small cautionary note. Pre-war Riley 12/4 engines have the pressure relief valve AFTER the filter. Therefore very high pressures can be generated through the filter cannister and blow the internal filter tube to pieces, thereby rendering the filter useless. I assume you have the Blue Diamond conversion?

What you need is a filter that has a high flow rate (the 12/4 gear pump puts out over 6 galls per minute) together with an anti drain & pressure relief valve....

I've noticed that search results no longer appear in date order (with respect to the 'latest reply' date). This means that older threads are appearing above threads that have had more recent replies.

Is this a bug ?... Read more

It's now almost a month after I first reported this bug and nothing has been done about it ?

It might be worth pointing out that it seems to happen when you narrow down your search to a particular car in the 'Technical matters' section....

Saw a Nissan Juke for the first time yesterday. I can't believe that anyone would design a car that looked that ridiculous! Must be the ugliest car I've seen for a long time, from any angle. I suppose it has some sort of novelty value, but I'm darned if I can understand why anyone would buy one on looks. Read more

The Juke just looks like a small BMW X6 to me. Similar shape.

Mind you, I've yet to see a BMW whose shape I like.

Been to look at a Scenic 1.9 DCi today, and the car is not bad for a Renault, however, I noticed a long scratch on the passenger rear door about 15-18 inches long which doesn't to have appeared to be too deep, but the place that is selling the car has tried to touch it up with a paint pen.

The car is the right price for the money, but I'm thinking to make it just that little bit nicer, I would like to get the scratch eliminated elsewhere.... Read more

Hi, My Golf had four new ignition coils last April after the engine started to misfire. The same thing has happened again and my local garage has replaced one coil. All was well for about two weeks but now the engine symbol shows when I am driving the car.

The garage now want to replace all four coils again at a cost of about £160.I feel there must be something else wrong as before last April the car has not had an electrics /engine problem since we got it in 2007.... Read more

I'm having trouble starting my car recently, especially after I haven't driven it for a day or 2. It's my first car, so it's a little hard to describe it technically, but I'll give it a bash!

When I turn the ignition on, the engine is turning over, but it doesn't kick on to start. I've used EasyStart to get it going a couple of times, I know it's pretty bad for the engine, but it's used as a last resort. After that has been put in, it fires up fine.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I recently changed the sparkplugs thinking that could be the problem, but I've had the same problem again.

Thanks
