Hi Everyone,

I've currently got a company car ('59 Audi A3 Sportback) that I'm giving back this Friday to move onto a car allowance scheme mainly for better business mileage rates. Temporarily I will be driving our '52 1.6 Focus but that will shortly have to go to my Wife as we have a baby on the way in June and will need a second car. ... Read more

OK well I had a very good test drive of the 325i. Car was in very good condition inside and out, cosmetically the worst I could find was a pin dent on the offside front wheel arch. One minor gripe was that there was no cd-player or changer in the boot but from googling I should be able to have a changer fitted in the boot for a few hundred quid. Plenty of room in the back and isofix points which is a bonus (Can't believe our 2002 Ford Focus hasn't got those!)

Mechanically the gearbox performed well, smooth changes up and down including when I put my foot down suddenly - it kicked down and went off as expected. No shudders or rattles through the wheel either. It pulled ever so slightly to the left (Very very small amount) which is my only mechanical gripe and I do mean slightly - does anyone think this could be cause for concern?...

Hi folks. I need some hints regarding a problem with my mum's Mondeo. It was left sitting for around 4-5 months. It's a 2000 Mk3 1.8LX that's done about 100k miles.

The battery was completely flat but the engine jump started quite easily. It seems to run fine, for a good 15mins or so at the most while not moving and the car can be crept forwards and backwards very slowly, but as soon as you try to drive it away there is a faint click and the engine dies.

A friend has suggested that the immobiliser may need reset. However I seem to recall that when the immobiliser is active, the car will not start at all. If it is the immobiliser how do you reset it anyway?... Read more

The owners manual for my mondeo gives a set of pressures for "up to 3 persons" with a bias towards the front, and a higher set of pressures for "more than 3 persons" with a bias towards the rear. We are a family of 5 and the car is used for a combination of passengers or solo trips in equal measures, mainly urban and B roads.

Should i go with the highest option or maybe have even pressures throughout ?... Read more

Hello any advice much appreciated. My ford focus has developed a problem with its gearstick. Firstly when in gear the you can move the stick across to the next gear without going thru neutral. Ie you can move left across to first from third. The car continues in third even tho the stick position is first... Also occasionally there is resistance going into first when attempting to move off. Then it will go into first position but when I try to move off it seems I am in third. I then attempt to move off in second but find I am in fourth gear. Occasionally I also go into fourth when trying to move down to second. This problem has been occuring over the past two days. If anyone could shed any light would be very appreciated!! If anyone also has any idea of cost of repair that would be good too?! Thanks!! Read more

If it has a cable gear change it could be that the outer part of the cable is not fixed, if its rods it could be wear on the ball joints or something loose.

I wonder if you know of any way to work out how much per week/month/year poor road surfaces cost the average car user. I haven't had any noticeable damage...yet...but worry that one more sunken manhole cover will mean I have to pay hundreds in repairs. (I heard a taxi driver say once that he had to get new tyres every month and was forever having his taxi mended; got me a bit worried).

I've been using the bus to get to/from work for the past 6 months purely to save the damage to my car (and there's the added advantage that it's my little bit for the environment), but even with a 3-monthly pass it works out at the same as the cost of petrol so there's no money saving there. I'm trying to decide whether the hassle of not being able to come and go as I please (buses are once an hour so I spend a lot of time hanging around) is worth it. Are all the lumps and bumps in the road causing as much damage as they sound like they are? Is using the bus worth a few extra pence per day? ... Read more

Thank you, thank you, thank you - really helped me to weigh it all up and put it in perspective.

Sounds like I've been worrying about nothing, because my suspension as far as I know is fine and would probably have been knackered by now if it was going to be, so not like I have to worry about it happening tomorrow. I'll just put it down to wear and tear if it does happen, and get it sorted then. ...
