FIAT Seicento - Car vs using the bus - Hipfidelity

I wonder if you know of any way to work out how much per week/month/year poor road surfaces cost the average car user. I haven't had any noticeable damage...yet...but worry that one more sunken manhole cover will mean I have to pay hundreds in repairs. (I heard a taxi driver say once that he had to get new tyres every month and was forever having his taxi mended; got me a bit worried).

I've been using the bus to get to/from work for the past 6 months purely to save the damage to my car (and there's the added advantage that it's my little bit for the environment), but even with a 3-monthly pass it works out at the same as the cost of petrol so there's no money saving there. I'm trying to decide whether the hassle of not being able to come and go as I please (buses are once an hour so I spend a lot of time hanging around) is worth it. Are all the lumps and bumps in the road causing as much damage as they sound like they are? Is using the bus worth a few extra pence per day?

Any advice most welcome, thanks.

So, you haven't had any damage, but started using the bus because a taxi driver mentions it? Hardly a an impartial opinion - maybe you should use his/her taxi?

This is a bit like having a dog & barking yourself - but worse, presumably you've been standing around during that freezing winter weather, waiting for buses, simply on the notion (not backed up by fact..) that your car will get damaged.

You're 'enjoying' the worst of both worlds - paying for a car, but not using it & having the inconvenience & extra cost of public transport.

I guess the above counts as advice...

Generally the car will be quicker as well...and that gives you more times which is a very precious commodity

This post really is a bit silly now, you are paying the road tax and insurance of your car but not using it and forking out hundreds for a bus pass. Secondly the Taxi-driver might have his tyres replaced often because of the way he drives or obviously because he is driving all the time!

Of course it is not worth it if you have the car use it, and no unless the suspension in your little FIAT is absolutely shot then no it should not be doing much damage, besides how much are tyres for those cars, cant be more than 50 quid max.

So really yes you are wasting your time hanging around for the bus, use the car that is nice and warm and just avoid the potholes!

Thank you, thank you, thank you - really helped me to weigh it all up and put it in perspective.

Sounds like I've been worrying about nothing, because my suspension as far as I know is fine and would probably have been knackered by now if it was going to be, so not like I have to worry about it happening tomorrow. I'll just put it down to wear and tear if it does happen, and get it sorted then.

Avoiding the pot holes might be easier said than done, but can but try eh!

Cheers for the help!
