Took car to main dealer to investigate failed door handle entry switch (see previous post). Diagnosed faulty switch ! Amazing, just what we told them, however they quoted £130 as door panel has to be removed. (I know it's a tricky one cos I've tried to get it off before) But this seem a bit pricey. Anyone repaired one ?

At the same time they quoted £300 ish for cambelt + £80 if water pump is needed. 32k miles and 5 years old - is this due now ? and is that price competitive ?... Read more

Time to changes Mrs Gs car, a Mitsubishi Grandis.

Eldest daughter has moved on from home, next eldest will be 17 this year and becoming more and more independant, younger two still need a lot of transportng around but a big petrol 7 seater isn't' what we need anymore.

Budget around 14K tops, like in 2007 hope to buy a 1 or 2 year old direct from manufacturers approved/used schemes.... Read more

PS With your budget you could buy a brand new top-of-the-range Hyundai ix20 which has plenty of kit. Every bit as good as the CashCow but at a reduced cost - my money would be in the Hyundais over modern Nissans for reliability too.

Pretty certain your car will have a PD engine in it. If so then the main connector on the side of the cylinder head should be checked for oil and dirt ingress. I would also check the camshaft and followers for excessive wear as I see a few of these now with problems through wear. You can get a kit to replace cam and followers for around £200. You wont be getting a coil light when the engine is warm as it doesnt need to pre heat the engine. Only when that light flashes do you need to worry as it means a fault is found and it will either go into limp mode or not run.

I never had any luck with claims with aftermarket parts of any sorts as they have every excuse under the sun.
I always use genuine parts since about 1996 when I had a massive claim rejected by a well known aftermarket manufactures.
When ever i subjected a claim to a dealer for a failed part , never a problem, partly because for the dealer a warranty claim was still a job.that even applied to pad a disc kits , cam belts, engines and gearboxes etc.
I remember once fitting a genuine mitsibushi gearbox to a Shogun just before the owners went to spain and the gearbox failed in Spain and after a little battle Mitsibishi Europe replaced it all FOC! if it had ben an aftermarket job it would have been dire!

The leasing company that my employer owns is offering a new Vauxhall Astra Sports Touer(estate) 1.6i 16v SRI 5 door auto for £9,949. Its pre-registered.

List price is £21k. What should I look out for or is it such a good deal that I should bite their arm off? Read more

Try not to get distracted by the % 'discount' from list price. As a private owner you won't be able to realise this in any meaningful way. It is easy to end up with a car you don't want because it's a 'bargain'. The 1.6 n/a is the least tempting engine out of the range-and might feel a bit strained in quite a big car. The simple question is: would you rather have the £9.9k or the Astra?

i have n reg astra sport 1.8 16v that keeps overheating, when ive checked under the bonnet i can see and hear water escaping from the thermostat housing where it bolts on to the engine, i just want to know if it has a gasket or is the problem something else. thanx for your help Read more

Sorry to hear that. But the overheating is almost certainly what caused the h/g to fail-they don't fail unless provoked. You need to cure the overheating problem, otherwise the h/g will go again and your work will be wasted. [sorry if that is obvious]
