Hi All,

I've got a P reg 306 which has an MOT failure on the headlight adjuster. Apparently it's missing. I swapped the light over with one from GSF but didn't see that I'd missed the adjuster. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it looks like as I need to get another one out the scrappy tomorrow....?... Read more

Yesterday I started to replace the outside temperature sensor on my Nov. '97 406. I got the mirror out as described in Haynes but then found that the mirror motor was mounted differently to how it was described in the manual. The manual shows the motor mounted on the outside (i.e. easily accesible and removable side) of the mirror inner frame whereas mine is mounted behind it even tho' the screws are readily accessible. It looks as if I will have to remove the back of the mirror to get at the motor and thence to the temp. sensor.

I cannot find any reference to this procedure in Haynes. Any suggestions welcome. Read more

Can't help I'm afraid, I have done several Citroen ones and I just prised them out from the bottom of the mirror, cut the leads and soldered the new ones to them. I have on '01, 406 so hope I don't get your trouble. You could try :

Hi guys some advice needed.

i used to own a Mazda5 diesel which I have had to get rid of due to change in jobs and lower milage may run me into DPF problems (although I had some minor ones before having read on this i have heard its a living nightmare on lower mileages) now having driven diesels for the past 15 years due to high mileage covered I think its fair to say i have an affection for them, now although my mileage wont justify it as an economical option i dont feel as comf***able in a petrol, what i wanted to know is if i purchase a non DPF diesel on an average ,mileage of approx 7000-8000 miles (mainly local driving) and get a 6 month oil change between services taking the usual precautions of leting it run idle a few minutes after journey completed etc should i avoid any major problems? also on some runs the engine may not fully warm up. i appreciate that my driving patterns will not be ideal for a diesel, but my brothers 306 1.9td seems to cope well with similar driving habits. whilst i can live with a petrol i would much prefer a diesel. thank you to all posters in advance. Its a bit of a calculated risk to go for a diesel but you're reducing the risk by looking for non DPF, simmering the engine and regular oil and filter changes. Trouble is did the previous owner treat the car as sympathetically? It's a bit less of a risk with petrol plus it would warm up quicker and suffer less engine wear. Most VW diesels are quite sensitive to having the right spec oil used but I'm not sure that's the case with a non DPF unit is but someone else here will know. As always with older cars, I think general condition, full service history and a very inquisitive look over and test drive should guide your decision as much as these replies.

hi, my cylinder head gasket has failed and its boiling the water,a grage i phoned and they said that they will need to skim the cylinder head, theyve not looked at it yet but insist it needs it done.is what theyve said correct or should i go else where? Read more

Peter.N.

Failure of the head gasket will not in itself cause overheating, what does is the pressure of combustion gas in the cooling system blowing the water out of the overflow or filler cap, if that is what is happening, yes the gasket has failed, if its boiling while still full of water it could be the water pump or a radiator blockage.

As tdc says, if it has boiled its highly likely that the head has warped, its always best to get it skimmed anyway if removing the head, just in case, as the cost of skiming is considerably less than having to take it off again.

The speed on my car does not work. The garage was told that it was a sensor in the dash board, it was removed and sent to the experts who bench tested it and gave it the all clear.

Ford technical suggested it could be a sensor linked to the auto gear box ( this wa overhauled 18 months ago) stil no luck as they say the gear box will have to be stripped down to get to 3 sensors... Read more

How long did the battery hang on in there while you drove around without any speedo.

I only ask as I seem to have the same problem....

The catch on the O/S rear seat will not release preventing me from dropping the entire rear seat. The N/S catch releases but the bar carrying the luggage cover and dog guard prevents both seats from dropping. The release lever on the top of the O/S seat would indicate that the latch may be only partly engaged but the seat back will not move at all and the lever appears to have no effect.

There is no evident way of getting at the catch but, if I could remove the bar carrying the lugage cover I might stand a chance of releasing the seat. Any ideas?... Read more

I bought my 54 plate Alfa GT 3.2 V6 from a dealer some distance away because there aren't may of these cars for sale. It was bought at the begining of December supposedly in good condition with everything working and 3 month mechanical warrenty, I test drove it and things seemed ok. It was pointed out to me that the front bumper had been resprayed and I am fine with that, however a few days after buying I checked the coolant level and it was down so I topped it up and things seemed ok (I work from home and don't actually use it much). I'll make this shorter by saying that I found it leaked but only really noticable when doing longer journeys, had it pressure tested and radiator was leaking had this replaced but dealer wouldn't pay (offered £80, it cost £250 doing it cheaply buying from ebay and local garage not alfa). The car was still leaking and traced to some o rings perished on the part that connects the radiator pipes to the engine block. Also while looking for the leak I noticed the engine stabiliser bar bushes were completely worn out so I replaced that. The cruise control doen't work, passenger heated seat doesn't work and the rear parking sensors do not work also. An intermittent knock developed from the front suspension area, the stabiliser bar ends and a damper were replaced (£230). I found a hole in the exhaust that had been temporarily been patched up and now the water pump is not working and is being replaced today, all the timing belt and tensioners need doing at the same time, as the belts have to be removed to take the pump off (£550 not alfa dealer). I've currently wasted about 12 hours of my time going to and from garages and in fault tracking which has prevented me from working as well.

The web site of the garage states that all cars are hpi clear, mot'd, serviced where needed, have a 140 point check, are professionally valeted and come with a 3 month/3000 mile warranty for peace of mind.... Read more

It sounded a reasonable idea at a good price, and passed on the details to my daughter who was getting it for my brithday. She ordered on April 13, and by now, May 5th it has not arrived. Several emails by my daughter have gone unanswered, phone calls fielded expertly, as was one of my own. Webside seems to be down.

So, if anyone intends to order a Diesel Head, tread with considerable care.
