Failure of the head gasket will not in itself cause overheating, what does is the pressure of combustion gas in the cooling system blowing the water out of the overflow or filler cap, if that is what is happening, yes the gasket has failed, if its boiling while still full of water it could be the water pump or a radiator blockage.
As tdc says, if it has boiled its highly likely that the head has warped, its always best to get it skimmed anyway if removing the head, just in case, as the cost of skiming is considerably less than having to take it off again.
