Hello! Here's my problem. The grid on my back window does not operate whatsoever. I've looked at the 4 pins in my tailgate and I've noticed one pin is stuck and does not make contact with the contacts below when the boot is closed.

Is this my problem? My rear window wiper is working just to let you know.

Thanks guys, Phil. Read more

Thanks for letting us know all is OK.

Why is it that some local authorities only deem it necessary to stick a street name sign on one side only? Usually on the side you can't see as you approach it? Does anyone else find this annoying? I really must get a sat-nav... Read more

Yes. I suspect part of the problem is that today's delivery postmen don't stay on a walk for very long, presumably to avoid boredom, so they don't have much time to get to know the district and its quirks. My experience is limited to Christmas delivery a very long time ago, but even then I tried to deliver stuff to the right place as far as I could. But I am sure an awful lot of Christmas mail is vaguely addressed - what happens to that?

I seem to be getting through more headlight bulbs than seems normal.....

Last changed both headlight bulbs in March for brand new Osram H4 Nightbreakers, about 4,000 miles ago, and now one does not light on dipped (but stillworks mainbeam)

This seems to be the max I seem to be getting out of bulbs over the last 2 yrs. Any idea what the prob could be ?

Most of my driving is at night, so they do get used a lot, but still seem to be getting through a lot.

Would this signify voltage regulator probs ? Is this easy tochange (on the alternator ?) Read more

correct, these sort of bulbs just don't last very long. If you really want these type of bulbs, then try the Phillips brand, they are of much higher quality (and are standard fit in some of the later toyota's) Osram dare I say it are a bit on the 'cheap' side. The old adage of ' you get what you pay for' applies.

I have just paid £44.00 for a thermostat for my 1.8 brava!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously its needed in this weather otherwise i would not have bothered.

how do they justify the price of parts for a 9 year old car?

still, on the bright side, its doubled the resale value of the car (to £88)! Read more

The price will depend to an extent on the quantity of parts manufactured. If the part is no longer used in current models, then the quantity manufactured will be lower and the manufacturing cost will be correspondingly higher.

I have a problem with my Ford Focus 2.0 Tdci which I can't get resolved. Two main things happen intermittently:

1. Sometimes when slowing to a stop the engine clearly hasn't stalled but there are absolutely no revs. The gas pedal just feels like a sponge. This also happens sometimes when the engine is turned on after refuelling.

2. Sometimes when driving along (either cruising or accelerating) all revs vanish and the engine brakes slowing the car rapidly, almost like emergency braking. This can be quite disconcerting and dangerous particularly when there is a vehicle close behind. It seems to happen for no apparent reason. This is then followed by a period when the car drives roughly for a while. It then settles back to normal.

The Main Dealer has checked out management sytems etc. and is baffled.

Anybody any ideas.

Might seem like an odd post, in view of how many people post with issues related to engine management lights being ON, but I noticed a strange thing tonight:

-when I switch the ignition on, all the dash lamps illuminate- apart from the engine management light.

I've had it 9 months, its done about 86k miles, 3k with me, trouble-free so far, and I've only just noticed this. However, I'm now concerned that the light has been 'got at' and disabled in some way, concealing an engine fault. Anyone think of a way to tell? Get codes read?

I seem to recall a trick you could do by switching the engine off, turning the ignition key, and pressing the trip reset button, which is supposed to display stored codes. Doing this showed up nothing with this car.

Don't know about the light but an '03 diesel shouldn't need one-EOBD on diesels didn't come in till later.

I presume nobody tested it with Firefox. Cos it don't work! Stuff all over the place, boxes on top of each other, ...

Fine with Explorer. Fine even with Chrome, surprisingly, given its small number of users.

For completeness Stephen the message list would not load at the office today (IE6 and XP Professional)
- a message then appeared to the effect that
"script on page is causing a performance problem with IE which might cause IE to stop responding - continue or cancel the use of scripts on the page".
I assume this was your rogue advert.

IE7 and XP Pro on my PC
I was getting this earlier yesterday and reported it to mods.
01:00 this morning - fantastic fast responses
Lunch time and the message reappeared just once or twice

All OK this evening with fast responses.

What is the point of a traffic census. A total waste of time.
In North Surrey they have been blitzing around the area at differing points. I got caught and duly participated. Where have you been? where are you going? What a complete waste of my time and there's.
Not only that, they seem to create an awful lot of congestion especially in the rush hour when we are all in a hurry.
Takes a good motorcycle cop of the road as well. Some of you may think that is a good thing though!!! Read more

Indeed I don't give the national census any more info than necessary. If you have seen the sort of questions they have added to the next one re your sexual preferences, you too might not be so keen to answer.
I am pleased to have put Jedi Knight down for my religion on the last one. So many others did that it has know become a recognised religion.

I have twin daughters taking their practical driving tests in the New Year (theory done and passed).

Anyone got a recommendation for a safe but maybe small car. It would also need to do a fair few miles to the gallon, since they are still at school/college. They could do without but i don't like the idea of them passing their test and then it being years later after uni when they drive again.

On the country roads around here their friends who have passed have had a fair few accidents between them, some serious and some minor. So safety is the main issue. Read more

Listen to Ian (Cape Town) about getting your daughters to change a wheel, check dipstick etc. They'll probably think you're being "protective dad" again but it'll be invaluable when the inevitable happens on a cold wet night. You might even get an extra hug out of it.

I once stopped to offer help to two young women but was quickly waved on by them because, of course, I could have been anyone. They did the right thing IMO. But they were shivering and had their arms folded and didn't look like they were going anywhere. I'm assuming of course but if they had changed their wheel they wouldn't have needed to wave me on in the first place.

Loads of different opinions on the right car on this thread. I like the Modeo one. Very sensible. But newer superminis (like Citroen C1 or Hyundai i10) are well equipped, are safer than they look and chic to boot.

I wish you good luck.

Hi, have recently acquired an odd problem with my 04 Astra. The bite point seems way too high. For instance, the car is biting just as I am to lift my foot from the pedal. Grip is fine, not slipping at all, as far as I can tell. Called VX, they told me to check brake fluid as its shared with clutch. Checked, its fine. What could this be?

My car does suffer from the clutch judder, but only very slightly some mornings. This seems to be a separate sort of problem as it does it all the time.

Any ideas?

Regarding the clutch judder, Vauxhall have changed the lining material it's made from. Not sure how far back they're offering replacements - you'll need to ask them.

See www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=38296 for more info.

EDIT - just seen mention that only being changed under the 3 yr / 60,000 mile warranty period.
