Street name signs or lack of them - captain chaos
Why is it that some local authorities only deem it necessary to stick a street name sign on one side only? Usually on the side you can't see as you approach it? Does anyone else find this annoying? I really must get a sat-nav...

I once worked on a project in Liverpool schoos. The number of streets without road names full stop - not on one side or the other. So an a-z was only so much use. You'd have to drive until you could fine a street name, work out where you were, and then plan a route.

So give me sat nav in these circumstances. But would never rely on it. Back then it was not an option even in an Mercedes S Class. This was late 90s.

It's not so bad around liverpool nowadays, although I have notice that alot of the signs are higher up now.

Penny Lane however has had the sign painted onto the wall at one end, rumour is that the students from the nearby halls of residents kept nicking the metal signs.

I thought this was standard practice for all local authorities. It rarely gives me a problem ~ and I haven't got a sat-nav.

In a lot of cases, the full complement of street signs have been installed. Only some people come along and steal them for the scrap metal value - just as they do with manhole coevrs, traffic signs etc. The scrap cost of aluminium makes it very, very attractive.

TBH the street signs are not usually the problem when trying to find places, its usually the lack of building numbers that causes me the most problems, even when I'm walking and can take my time... shops are especially bad for refusing to put up numbers, if I were the Royal Mail I'd refuse to deliver to any building that was not clearly marked with a number or name, or both... that should get it sorted pretty quick!

I have a very big number on my home, unfortunately the Royal Mail don't know the difference between 18 and 26, 32, 17 judging by the number of mis delivered letters I receive.

UK street name signs are still far better compared to many other countries (including most EU countries)

As Ian in Capetown will tell you. They have the street names engraved in the corner kerb stones of many roads.
I have not been aware of these road signs being nicked. :-)

These days - not a lot.
In my area " described as the best area to live in" the street name signs, the sort that live on two foot high legs, were going "walkabout" so the missing ones have been replaced with plastic versions.

Not seen anyone shinning up a pole to nick signs or sawing them down around here :-)

Check on the Royal Mail website that your mail has the correct form of address. tinyurl.com/59ryyc

A lot of mail is poorly/incorrectly addressed. One of the most important things nowadays is the postcode. Without it mail has to be sorted manually.

Nottingham City Council are useless at many things apart from wasting money, but they have always put in a sign or altered/moved them when I have requested one.

My mail is getting through fine, it's other peoples that is being dumped through my letterbox. They do generally tend to have a post code on them. We rather suspected that the postal person is trying to cut short their round as the houses are well apart.

Indeed - but residential postcodes identify about a dozen addresses, not individual houses, which have to depend on the postman's thoroughness. We had a confrontation with our credit-card company recently, who had sent out new cards which the postman delivered to a nearby house whose occupants were away for 3 weeks. I suspected that this was the case, but we couldn't do a lot about it.

This is one that annoys me,so often it is houses at corners, which could be on one street or the other, which do not have a number. When I am delivering my attitude to this is'if they cannot be bothered to make it clear where their address is,why should I be bothered to work it out from the houses that have put numbers up?',so they don't get their delivery.

One thing that got me when I was working was house numbers. On the older council estates in Manchester, the house number was a slightly raised metal digit. Council houses were painted wi8th grey gloss and the Direct works dept always painted over the number so you had to be about 6 feet from the door to read it. Great at night for the emergency services !.....not. Ted

I would suggest that if you are able to work it out from the addressee's name, you may be no better than they are if you don't make the effort.

a slight slant on the OP, funny street names in my vicinity....

cemetery rd
flesh hovel lane
slash lane
holy bones
cut throat lane
welsic rd

and to be honest its a quite nice place

And I would suggest not, names are not involved, the effort is walking round to the next street to see what the numbers are either side of the junction to see if their house is in that run or on the street I just left, why should I do all that because they do not see any need to put numbers up?Bear in mind this is one house out of 500 I have visited in a day.On the other hand some ambiguous houses have numbers and street name put up by the householder,as it should be.

Yes. I suspect part of the problem is that today's delivery postmen don't stay on a walk for very long, presumably to avoid boredom, so they don't have much time to get to know the district and its quirks. My experience is limited to Christmas delivery a very long time ago, but even then I tried to deliver stuff to the right place as far as I could. But I am sure an awful lot of Christmas mail is vaguely addressed - what happens to that?

Back to motoring ...
