Ignore the idiot that told you that and take it to somebody who knows about common-rails. [After fitting £2,000 worth of new injectors, it'd be just the same.]

A cranking rail-pressure check and an injector leak-off check are the places to start.

Haven't started the car for a a good 48 hours due to the icy conditions, the bonnet now has about 1cm ice all over it, and there is snow due tonight. I am worried if I don't start it the battery might die. I don't want to quickly turn the engine over as that will just drain more current so how long should I leave the engine ideling for to give the battery a bit of charge? Read more

If the battery's not knackered, don't bother. If it is knackered, get a new one.

If you leave the car unused for weeks on end, buy a battery charger.

hi all well iv been looking for a cheap thermostat online but cant seem to find anywhere that sells them. Iv tried the brokers but my cheapest quote was £30 but i have found them for other makes of cars for like £6. I want to try and do this myself as being a student going to a mechanic is not the wisest thing to do sometimes. My car is a 1998 1.3 ford fiesta finesse :D

thanks

Best not to use the radiator bleed valve - they have a habit of breaking which can mean a new rad.

Easier to loosen the bottom hose for drainage purposes.

As another poster has said, airlocks shouldn't be a problem, just put the heater on hot, runthe engine with the rad cap off and top up.

You can make a perfectly good gasket from a cereal packet.

I once did an "on the road" gasket repair for a relative using a piece of string - it lasted until she sold the car and probably for years after that.

Apparently, whilst my car was being defrosted this morning - engine running, heater blowing on full, the battery ran flat and the car stopped. Jump started, and now running.

Anybody ever heard of this happening before?

I just don't understand why my wife doesn't see it the same way!

Divorce her and marry Stu's wife.

3 new tyres and a battery though, might be time for a new motor, get rid of the hated Vectra. I'm getting itchy fingers now I can see 2002 cars approaching the £1,000 mark...

please help me solve this problem

i have a corsa 1.0 w reg, when starting up i drive for about half a mile and it just dies, then the engine will turn but wont restart, i have to leave it about 15 minutes then try again and usually starts, then drive off again then it dies again. the engine light flashes as its going to die, it has a little z in the centre.

the same happens with the spare key.
the rac man has said that his machine does not recognise either key i use.

i have replaced with a new car battery today but still the same happens. a local man said its the immobiliser ? but i thought it wouldnt start at all if it was that ?

any ideas please Read more

My newly bought 106 diesel was having trouble starting from cold so after looking on this site and talking to the vendor of the car, I decided to replace the Glow Plugs. (Vendor has offer to pay for Glow Plugs and is offering a full refund of the car if they don't solve the problem- top guy!!).

I have replaced three of the plugs no problem but the last one seems to have sheared its "grip" nut. I can attached the correct sized socket and it turns the nut forever and a day but the nut is just turning on the central pin (the pin that the wires connect to)

Thus the Plug is not coming out!!!

Any suggestions- other than the non starting hopefully to be solved with new glow plugs it a great little car and I'm loathed to return it.

Just another point- I know a couple of people elsewhere on this site have suggested you can just run on three plugs but typically this plug is the nearest to the battery and the top part of the glow plug (where the cables slip on) also shear away with the holding nut so I cannot even re-attach the cables to run one old plug with the three new ones!!!

Is there tool someone can suggest that will grip the central spinal rather than the nut?

HELP!!

Still thinking back to front - re-edited it to make sense Read more

Hi Peter.N

Thanks for the suggestion- indeed as 659FBE states the plug is virtually flush with the cylinder head mounting (about 2mm left protruding) so not much left to weld to.

I don't have access to a welding tool anyway but thanks for the suggestion as I'm probably going to leave it in for now (Engine starts well on three plug - just a bit lumpy until the forth cylinder sorts itself out), but its another suggestion I can make when it comes to a mate with a workshop (and more engine knowledge) changing the cam belt and I might have another go of removing the plug then.

Just like to say this is a fantastic site even for a total novice to car maintanance like me!!

SWMBO's 306 HDi estate broke its offside front spring today just as she was moving off and the spring penetrated the tyre. I've not heard of this happening before, so maybe we're just unlucky.

It will be dealt with by a local garage (I'm not sure how they'll get the car there) on Friday.

My instinct is to ask the garage to replace both front springs. Have I got this right?

As always, my thanks in advance for any help. Read more

Very common; caused by the use of rubbish steel.

Replacing both is a good idea; do the dampers too at the same time - not cheap pattern ones either.

The 4 cases were found in the policyholders' favour. ".

The next 3 appeals were rejected, some of them seemed to be a very fine line.

Every time an appeal is upheld - we shouldn't jump for joy. The insurers will simply add it to next year's calulation. In other words, we pick up the bill.

In my local town is a cut through road which links a main road to a large retail park. It's used as a rat run by many cars. The pavement on each side of the road is flush to the road surface along much of its length. Some of the pavement has a solid white line denoting the edge of the road and in other places there are kerb stones which only sit half an inch or so above the road surface.
Because it's a narrow road and has the occasional parked car, many motorists resort to driving on the kerb. I don't drive on it and have endured the frustration of many oncoming motorists who felt I should have moved over to let them past a parked car on their side of the road!

My question is if a pavement is not raised and in some parts not clearly marked by kerb stones or white lines, is it a pavement at all or just a different coloured piece of highway and if I was to drive on it could I be prosecuted by plod? Read more

As rumble says its the stated cases that make a difference. Its an area of law that needs tidying up, especially brought into line with disability access laws.

we have a 1.1 independance.
Today, we had to jump the car as battery was flat. I have yet to check to see if voltage across the battery picks up when above idling, but the rev counter has also stopped working at same time. Can the faults be connected as i have heard the rev counter is run off alternater?
any help very much appreciated. Read more
