Good afternoon

I am looking to replace my old 406 (HD1 90) estate with one of the following models as I need a 7 seater estate but with reasonable economy.
The 2 models I have seen are 2002 (52 plate) ? 2.0 TD HDI 110 SE - approx 100000 miles on the clock & an 2004 1.6 HDI 110 S (AC) approx 70000 miles on the clock (does the AC stand for air con?)
I have looked at various web pages for these 2 cars and the information seems to vary slightly. As the body style and layouts etc are pretty much the same, can anybody advise what the main difference is between these 2 models, apart from engine size, (eg such items as traction control etc) and whether there are any potentially major problems I should look for? Is the SE a slightly higher spec to the S?
Any information would be very much appreciated
Thanks
Allan

Yes the AC does stand for Air Con

The SE has more toys than the S [poverty spec]

Have to inject my 2p worth here. At the risk of sounding trite, the IQ isn't meant to be beautiful. The front isn't certainly! But look at Toyota now. They're discontinuing the Celica, concentrating mainly on smaller, more utilitarian cars. I have to say that this is, IMO of course, a very astute move, destined to garner Toyota even more deserved riches. Its position alongside Ford and GM looks positively incredible, probably because it's more inventive than many manufacturers. As the squeeze is increasingly put on us motorists (and it will continue), small Toyotas with their bullet-proof mechanics and relatively amazing NCAP ratings are looking like the ones to go for.

Again, as someone who doesn't "know" the trade, I'm looking at the new Toyota offerings not so much as "new small cars" but as cars we will need to use if motoring is to be affordable in the longer term. And in that objective, Toyota is (very quiety) leading the way.

Hi, for a few weeks now I've been having a problem with my petrol 306. If if park overnight with the nose facing downhill (quite a steep hill), when i start it in the mornings, it starts fine but then seconds later sounds like its spluttering (like it's not being supplied with enough fuel). After a couple of seconds it completely cuts out. It will start again straight away with no problem. If i rev the engine after starting it, it wont cut out. Then, as i approach lights etc it will cut out randomly but will be fine whilst moving.

I've recently had a new stepper motor fitted and some engine temperate sensor. I don't know much about cars either which doesn't help! I park on a flat area at work and never had a problem when taking it out at lunchtimes or after work.

I do however have a dodgy battery (completely de-charges after 2 days of no use). A friend said it could be to do with the internals of the battery being at an angle. Could this be my problem? My remote central locking has died recently too around the same time as this problem started happening. Maybe they are linked?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more

As a follow up to Mr Fox's lane discipline thread - I try to keep out of other vheicles blind spots and try not to drive alongside HGVs. Any other tips? Read more

It's their NCD on the line, not mine. They have a powerful incentive not to crash into me. I don't worry about it.

A general awareness of the road users around you is of course a good thing, but endless speculation about the intentions of other drivers is a fruitless distraction....

Hi,

Before I have a heart attack could somebody please tell me the correct procedure for fitting the front driver side window runner trim which goes up the side of the door, over the top and down the other side. It is so easy to warp the metal and I cannot understand how to get over the lip without bending?

Thanks, john. Read more

Does anyone know how to remove the O/S/R lamp assembly to gain access to bulb? I have removed 5 securing screws that were visible, but the lamp still seems attached somehow. Any ideas? Read more

' A coroner has called for police to show more caution before embarking on high speed chases after revealing that they have led to the deaths of more than 200 people in the past six years.Michael Rose, the West Somerset coroner, said that he was gravely concerned that lives were being put at risk.Mr Rose said that nationally, since 2002, an average of three inquests a month have opened where police cars have been involved - one third of which concerned civilian deaths"

How does this compare to other European countries ?. I have been googling but not come up with any answers as yet. Read more

You are never going to have "zero" deaths in these circumstances. You can only mitigate the number of deaths to a publicly acceptable level through rules, processes, proceedures, on the hoof risk assessments, driver training etc.

What becomes an acceptable figure? Maybe 200 in 6 years is the lowest it will ever go, but you must always strive to reduce if you can. That is a job for ACPO and their rules of engagement are far more stringent than when I was on the beat in the 70's.

Is the coroner including "vicinity only" POLACS? There are plenty of those I should think. If you had access to the figures, you might find that the full blooded, full on, nee naw, nee naw pursuits account for a lot less than the 200 quoted.

What if I was chasing a thief on foot and he ran around the corner without looking, knocked over an old dear who then broke her hip and died from complications? Or if he ran into the road, causing a car to swerve to avoid him, thereby striking a car coming the other way killing all the occupants? Does that happen? I am sure it does. Should that stop police chasing tea leaves? No. The public expects police to act.

Carrying out a bit of free diagnosis for a regular customer I have come across a bit of a quandary. His problem was one of unstable idle and occasional stalling plus his headlights were occasionally dimming then getting brighter. Main dealer could find no problems (!) and another indy had also found no faults. I got him to check charge rate and he had 14.0-13.9 which I thought a little low so got him to check AC volts which were 35v. 'Theres our problem' methinks so as there was no improvement after cleaning earths recommended he fit a new alternator. This we did with a genuine Peugeot supplied exchange unit he supplied. We now have a constant 14.4 volts and the idling is perfect and light output stable BUT I still see 25v AC at the battery?
Any thoughts?

Yes, you would probably see a spike which would correspond to the "KV" spike - I'm not sure you would be able to pick out any ringing, or the burn time!, and unless you're very unlucky with the speed ratio between crank and alternator, there won't be any coincidence or pattern between the alternator ripple and the spikes.

i.e., if you see interference which is consistently timed with the alternator ripple, then, it's unlikely to be HT.

If you see an interesting pattern, please grab an image, and post it up! (via an image hosting site)

Hi All,

My cooling fan has recently stopped cutting in. When it starts getting warm I can hear the a relay or something click but the fan doesn't start. I have checked the fan works by dropping across a battery and it's fine. It doesn't kick in when I turn the a/c on either

Any ideas? Read more

Only the obvious, check the fuses first and if that doesn't show a problem then you need to crack out the multimeter. It is possible that the coil side of the relay is receiving power but the contacts part aren't which would account for the click. I'd be looking for broken wires, bad earths or corroded connectors.
