OK - I admit to watching last night's Coronation Street. Girl has mini, having rouble. Tyrone the mechanic sits in it, says - no wonder you're having trouble, your oil warning light is flashing. he asks "when did you last check your oil". "Never", she says. So he immediately revs up the engnie then says "let's take the car for a spin".
Methinks if a mechanic did that to my car, I would hang him by his short and curlies from a very high tree and attach some extremely heavy weights to his person.
OK - I know it's telly, but what an impression to create of mechanics! (Script writer obviously know nowt about cars!) Read more

Most of these ford radios have a removable security section (usually the pre-set station numbers).Make sure it is fully engaged in the front of the radio.hth
I want to change headlight bulbs for brighter ones on my 57 reg Mazda. However there is not enough room at the rear of the light cluster to turn and remove the bulb holder. There appears to be one screw and one bolt retaining the headlight cluster, which if removed would allow the cluster to come forwards and give more room to remove the bulbs.
Does anyone know whether doing this will change the alignment of the headlights? Read more

17528 OXYGEN (LAMBDA) SENSOR HEATING B2 S1:
OPEN CIRCUIT P1120-004 NO SIGNAL/COMMUNICATION.
I changed the lambda sensor (nightmare) and switched the mil light off but after stopping and starting the car it came back on with the same fault code i checked both lambda sensors with a multimeter and got readings of 9.7ohms and 9.3ohms i knew there was nothing wrong with them but i just changed the pre-cat drivers side one anyway as stated in the cd manual and as i say the fault still there does this mean the heater circuit is at fault does anyone know where to go from here,i dont want to take it to audi just yet.
thanks tom. Read more
IIRC Bank 2 is the passenger side. S1 is the pre cat sensor. Check for 12v feed and a good earth on the white wires and a good earth on the grey. Black wire is the signal.
Without checking the wiring diagram I'd suggest all sensors are heated via the same relay so suspect a wiring prob if no supply to B2S1
I need to change the gearbox oil on a 1997 bmw 318 tds(m41 engine)
According to the owners manual the specified oil is denoted by a sticker on the gear box casing...but mine appears to be missing.
Would appreciate any info on the recommended oil for this model as most main dealers I have contacted all seem a bit vague on the matter.
Ta in advance. Read more
Guess I will stick in some fully syn, just to be safe.
Hello,
Picking up a Vauxhall tomorrow - is it still worth going ahead considering the state of GM in the States?
What if Vauxhall go bust - hopefully not!! what about spares and warranties?
I cant believe the predicament people are in, at the moment what with Woolworths and everything - and I feel for them.
My question is probably selfish considering how many decent people are suffering due to the so called credit crunch.
I suppose if people dont buy cars etc - then how do we get out of this mess?
Regards

GM will get a bail out next week by the US government.
As for spares, if the worst did happen they'll be roughly 30 years + worth of them! Rememebr rover? also most parts are available via 3rd parties anyway.

The car is a 1.8 petrol.
I noticed today quite visible smoke (whitish) coming out of the exhaust pipe even when the engine was idling. Could this just be the cold weather and what else should I look for if it is something more serious ? Read more
Just look for the coolant level going down.
Assuming all else is starting/running OK.

From Wiki:
"As Croker walks through the garage where the Minis are being prepared for the robbery, we hear that "Rozzer's having trouble with his differential" and we clearly see that the back of the red Mini Cooper is jacked up and Rozzer is obviously working hard. This is probably an insider joke since the Mini is a front wheel drive car and does not have a rear differential. In the early 1960s, front wheel drive cars were exceedingly rare and as a result, asking a novice car mechanic to repair a Mini's rear differential was a popular snipe hunt"
