It's time for me to get a new car to replace my Mini. I'm not looking for anything like my current car - it was originally my partner's, but various circumstances changed and I've ended up driving it for the last couple of years.
I'm 6ft 2in, and all my cars previous to the mini have been big(ish) saloons, so I'm looking at a Ford Mondeo 2.0 Zetec, Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 (last shape) or possibly a Honda Accord 2.0 EX (last shape).
I've seen that I can get an 08 Mondeo with ~3000 miles on the clock for £10,500. UK sourced car etc. I can't find a better deal than that right now, so I think that may be the one to go for.
I want something with at least 2 years manufacturers warranty remaining, with safety and reliability the main qualities I'm looking for in a car. Looking at around £10k - £10.5k.
Can anyone recommend anything better than the Motorpoint Mondeo deal described above?

V6 GHIA X - 122,000 miles trouble free - approx 400 miles per week. Suddenly started to overheat - gauge goes off the scale!
No heat through aircon/heater unit - just cold air
No visible loss of coolant
Possible water from exhaust (no steam as far as I can see) but only running engine on idle to save overheating - as soon as I drive away gauge goes off scale
Anyone with similar problems - could it be
Head gasket ?
Water Pump ?
Thermostat ?
If it is worse case ie head gasket - anyone know anything about K-Seal?

Thanks for all the responses. When I had time to look at the problem it proved to be nothing more than the fact that the tensioner bracket/pulley on the water pump drive belt had seized and shredded the belt. Quck visit to my nearest Ford spares outlet for a pulley and belt - it took me about 20 mins to fix.
More worrying is that when the problem happened I called out my breakdown/rescue service Green Flag who arrived approx 1 hour later than they promised, started the car, watched it overheat and decide it was probably the head gasket. Nothing they could do so they would tow me to a suitable repairer. There are just 3 bolts that hold the water pump drive belt cover in place but they didn't even look!
Anyone else had similar problms with Green Flag?
I have now switched to RAC!
Dear all
I notice that my engine coolant evaporates really quickly on either extended journeys, or on motorways when the engine is extended.
I lost half a tankful in covering 80 miles on the motorway on Saturday.
My current coolant is a mixture of antifreeze and water - nothing special.
Is there anything that I need to use specifically?
It doesn't sound normal to me that I have to keep topping up quite regularly - once a month.

Bought my March 06 2.2 GhiaX in March 07 from Motorhouse2000 with 11k on the clock for way under list. Car was mint.
Now has 26k on the clock and only problem has been the EGR which is common on these. Replaced under warranty.
Front tyres are good for 20k if driven sensibly and the rears a lot longer.
Average 43mpg on the commute and up to 60 on the motorway at a steady 70. I add MillersSport4 to each tank and only use brand fuels like Shell, BP etc.
Engine could be more flexible and you will do a lot of gear changing with the 6 speed box but the 1st and 2nd gears are torque restricted which is a pain but it gets going once into 3rd. You can be in 6th by 50mph.
Bags of room, lots of toys and decent performance/economy for the money.
Just got back from a tour of France in our MK7 Transit Motorhome during which we drove over the highest pass in Europe at Resterfond (9200 feet).
Some observations of this run were that, firstly the change in pressure from start, at about 3000 feet to the top meant that the gas turned on with a huge ?whoosh? when we made coffee. This calmed down when the gas regulator sorted itself out.
Secondly, that plastic milk bottle that had been opened at the top was badly squashed when we got down to our overnighting spot.
Thirdly, our Tom Tom went into a tis-was when descending the hairpin bends on the north side of the pass and said, ?turn around when possible?, this was seemingly caused by the road doubling back on itself to such a degree that it appeared as if we had done a U-turn.
Fourthly, and the main point of this post, the next morning I found that the engine had lost about a pint of coolant. There was no obvious sign of a leak anywhere, engine temperature going up the pass had been normal, outside temperature had been below freezing (it was actually snowing at the top). My guess is that due to the altitude change, the pressure cap (25 lb) had been unable to cope and had allowed some blow-off of coolant.
There is not a huge amount of through traffic over this pass, due to its remoteness, height, narrowness and only being open for three months per year and so there is not a lot of driver experience in using it. My question is, can such a loss of coolant be expected in driving over such a pass, or do I have a problem?

Not an alpine pass, but taking cars/4*4 vehicles up to the summit of Mauna Kea at approx 4,200m or 13,800 ft didnt show any coolant loss or other problems.

I have just seen on the RTE website in Ireland, that the Irish Motoring Writers Association has just crowned the Citroen C5 "Semperit Irish Car of the Year 2009". (last year's winner was the Ford Mondeo).
The Ford Fiesta was awarded "Semperit Irish small Family Car of the Year 2009".
The overall winner was chosen from the category winners. C5 scored an impressive 200 points with the new Fiesta taking second spot with 158 points, just shading the Jaguar XF in third place (156 points). Read more
NowWheels. I am realistic. You have to try and be positive. Of course things will take years to get properly better. We of course have been hit terribly hard by the crunch.
I honestly don't see anything wrong at all starting a thread on it. The Citroen C5 becoming the car of the year over here is indeed rather big news in the motor industry.
I have certainly no reason at all to run a one-man advertising campaign. End of story!
Has anyone ever changed the air filter on a Focus 1.6 TDCI?
I assume it's the oblong black box at the front right of the engine bay?
Halfords don't seem to stock a suitable filter (or at least their flip book in the store isle doesn't list one).
I'm interested to hear people's views on this. Thanks Read more
I have one of these cars. The air filter should be changed as part of a major service. If you're servicing it yourself then a Ford service dealer/Rapid Fit can supply you with the correct air filter which fits inside the black box that you have located.

Engine sounds rough at idling - as if on two cylinders - but seems OK when above idle speed. Plugs and coils have been garage checked and declared OK. Garage suggests valve burning but says compression check shows all cylinders even - any suggestions? Read more
It's an 8 valve with a single coil pack ?
On Sunday, as I often do on a Sunday and often have done over the years, I parked in a pay and display carpark near me.
When I got back to the car, there was a parking ticket.
???
It transpired (from talking to the parking warden) that 3/4 months ago the council decided to make it paying on Sundays as well as during the rest of the week. I must have parked there several times since the rules changed.
1. I cannot decide whether or not to forgive myself: Should I check every time I park in a familiar place that the rules have not changed.
2. I cannot decide whether or not to forgive the council. Any decent, honourable council would have big notices up "Sundays are paying too".
As the traffic warden could barely keep up writing tickets, and was dealing with a crowd of bewildered motorists, I was not the only one.
Grounds for appeal? (I'm not sure I can think of one!)

As a motorist, I'm expected to know the laws relating to motoring inside out. As most finable offences are what as known as ' absolute " their is no defence that I can offer against them.
I would therefor expect those charged with putting those laws in to effect to also know them inside out.

Include the Skoda Octavia in the shortlist and see what deals you can get. But the Mondeo sounds good.
