.........or better to wait until the new year?
There are some very good deals out there just now, but what will happen to the used car market as we move through 2009?
Will there be better deals come Jan/Feb due to the impending '09' registration?
Or better to hang off for a good 12 months if one wishes to really clean up? Read more
I've had this problem for a while and I do not how to solve it. My fog lights do not work whatsoever.
- The Fuse is OK
- The bulbs are brand new
- The switch works, as the light comes on.
Any others suggestions? EXTREMELY appreciated.
Thanks, Phil. Read more
Is it safe to physically pull the wiring out from behind my fog lights to check?
anybody got experience of this? can it be done? its a sport with manual gearbox Read more
I very much doubt if there is an aftermarket kit for this.Due to the complexities of the engine management system and the fact there is no throttle cable the only real solution is original fitment but I would think this is too costly.hth
I notice when starting the engine recently that you can hear the starter motro run on a bit after the engine has fired. Is there an easy fix for this? Read more
Remove the starter motor and clean the engage/disengage mechanism. Or fit a new starter motor. Personally I'd start with the cleaning unless removal was a long job.
I'm looking for a nearly new 4x4 diesel automatic, and am finding that there are few cars that fit the bill (or my pocket).
Short-listed are the Land Cruiser Prado 3.0D (2007/8), or, if I can find one in my budget, a BMW X3 (2006/7). Other than a Hyundai/Kia, the only other vehicle that fits the brief seems to be a Freelander 2. I've always assumed the Freelander to be generally unreliable? Is it worthy of a look? I could stretch to a 2008 ex-demo. Reliability is my number 1 priority. Is it worth my attention? TIA. Read more
I have now had my freelander 2 auto for six months. Totally trouble free & rattle free. I have not experienced any auto box hunting. In fact as auto boxes, go & matched to a diesel 4x4 it has to be the best i have experienced in over 30 years of motoring. I am fairly critical of an auto box as i tow a 29ft caravan. I am pleased with how the box changes down on its own on hills or comming up to junctions reducing the need for sitting on the brakes. The sports mode or manual shift is faultless.
fuel consuption wise when brandnew was bad! 23-27. However it has been improving drastically since passing 4500 miles & on saturday I covered over 350 miles on motorway with crusie control on & at 70 returned 37.6 & on the 175 mile return journey set the CC at 65 & returned 42. I normally now return 31-33 overall running about & 22-26 towing,I consider this excellent on a 2.2 auto 4x4 with huge amounts of tourqe & stunning performance for the size of vehicle. 0-60 in under 11sec compared to a Discovery I had that was about 18 sec 0-60.
The old freelander left a lot to be desired but the Freelander 2 is a totally different animal. Its also extremly quiet with no diesel noise pentration when driving which makes for a far less tiring drive. The longest distance travelled in one day was 860 miles in under 12 hours towing from the south of france & felt fine at the end of the day & I couldn't manage that in my Jaguar.

I don't care anymore. If I can't get to my customers to heck with it. Nobody pays my bills on time anymore anyway. When they do half of the cheques bounce or they want to have 6 months credit interest free or a price which makes me a loss or they go bust while they still owe me money..If they have to wait to see me because there's no fuel so be it.
Llamedos, backwards.....

Apart from that, things are great thanks. Signs of green shoots apparently.
Better now thanks.....

hi my car is a 2003 130 tdci the fuel consumption is crap basically the computer on average is saying iam doing about 28 mpg on average which is crap and can only get 46 mpg on motorway doing 70 in 6th gear i had the egr valve done recently at ford and since that has been done the fuel consumption has gone down the cooling fan comes on when car is cold and the temp gauge sits half way all the time whereas before it sat near the bottom like it was not hot thanks
p.s and no it isent leaking diesal or smells like its burning it i dont fill up my tank full often so i work by how much miles i get to a tenner i usually get 50 miles out of a tenner this is town drivinf by the way Read more
Some will come out (and lots on my 2003 Mondeo when it had a failing EGR) but little smoke comes out of a modern diesel because it is not allowed. Instead the DPF captures it and burns off during regeneration.
Well that's how DPFs are meant to work.
I have a petrol AEX engine which has a lot of "mayo" in the oil filler cap and has always (during the several months we've had it) run with a "tappet" type noise from the head. It seems to use too much oil and coolant and I expect there is a small leak internally across the cylinder head gasket. At some point in the future I want to take the head off and replace the gasket and check the state of the cam and related parts. What I want to know is: are there any other likely suspects for these characteristics and are there any known or common problems that I'm likely to have with this engine head? Read more
I think your diagnosis is correct seems quite a common problem after 9 or 10 years of running, tapping may be a sticky hydraulic tappet you can often clear it with an engine oil flush & fresh good quality oil Shell Helix semi synth has worked for me.
I have a 2004 (newer shape) A6 3.0 tdi SE Quattro. A few days ago it showed "battery level low" in the tv screen, looked at the graph and it was at about 5%, but the car started fine, the level has not moved it 3 days, the car is driven 150+ miles a day (mostly motorway). The battery voltage looks ok, and seems to be charging.
Also I have noticed that my keyless opening of doors does not work when I come to the car first thing in the morning (but will work after 20 mins of driving), the same goes for the interior lights, won't work on entry to the car, but fine after 20 mins of driving.
Is this the comfort module and damp/wet issue, if it is where is it located on my car?
Any help appreciated.

I think the A6 is the same as a Passat, in which case the Convenience ECU will be located under the front passenger carpet & foam underlay. Just right for collecting the water from a poor fitting pollen filter or blocked plunnum drains. Do a forum search & spend the rest of the day reading everything about those problems.
Although you have 12.6v which is fine, that will drop quite a bit when you start the car on a cold frosty morning.
Yours just sounds like the display computer is trying to tell you that the battery is near the end of its life, which with low temperatures as of late is the last thing you need.
Its probably the original battery & 4 years old now so you've had your moneys worth.
Take the car to a local battery factors who will check your existing battery under load & no doubt have a new replacement in stock to change at a reasonable price if nescessary.
As a follow on to the thread about defensive driving, we all know there is a fine line between progressive and aggresive driving.
What do you do you do to practice progressive driving and where is the line drawn before it becomes aggresive?
I always try and keep moving when entering a roundabout by observing the traffic joining at the entry before mine and altering my speed to avoid stopping, however if that entails bullying my way up the outside lane of the slip road and narrowly missing the traffic on the nearside, then it becomes aggresive.

Very good working definition of progressive (as opposed to aggressive) driving, from Oscar Wilde: "The type of driving which would neither startle the horses nor upset your sister".
Or maybe it was Groucho Marx...

That was my badly made point. No car is ever an investment but if you love driving it and love having it and owning it, then it doesn't matter how many thousands of pounds that car lost because of the pleasure it gave you. People spend £5k on a holiday for 2 weeks happily. I'd rather spend that on depreciation on a Jaguar XK... you pays your money, you takes your choice but the idea that a car is bad just because it depreciates heavily is naieve.
I apologise for not having made my point clearly.
