I have a petrol AEX engine which has a lot of "mayo" in the oil filler cap and has always (during the several months we've had it) run with a "tappet" type noise from the head. It seems to use too much oil and coolant and I expect there is a small leak internally across the cylinder head gasket. At some point in the future I want to take the head off and replace the gasket and check the state of the cam and related parts. What I want to know is: are there any other likely suspects for these characteristics and are there any known or common problems that I'm likely to have with this engine head?

I think your diagnosis is correct seems quite a common problem after 9 or 10 years of running, tapping may be a sticky hydraulic tappet you can often clear it with an engine oil flush & fresh good quality oil Shell Helix semi synth has worked for me.
