I need a car for a new 80 miles per day commute. Looking at a used car but not sure what's best. Was thinking BMW 320D E90. Seems I can one for around £9,000 with about 50k on the clock. I'd trade it in a year later before mils climb too high.
Anyone have a view on what's best in terms minimal depreciation, good MPG and a decent ride.

80 a day, so you'll do around 23k/pa to allow for weekends etc. Why not buy a three years old car on 70+, and keep it for three years? Must be cheaper, and at 140-150k it'll still sell at 6 years old if it has good SH and bodywork.
Hello, l have a Seat Alhambra 1.9 TD (PD) 2001 Y registered vehicle. The four speed fan to the heater control does not work on the first two settings, only on three & four. Does anyone know if this is a problem with the rheostat? if so, can you purchase them seperately & are they easy to fit?
Please note this is the manual control (not the climatronic) with the three dials & three buttons below.
Thanks in advance. Read more
Very probably a fault with the speed resistor. It is located behind the glovebox in the heater fan housing and attached by 1 torx screw. The part costs around £20.hth
I thought I would start this thread as the polar opposite to the other current thread "Never a better time to buy - if you have money"
Because if discussing it saves a few people from being tempted due to low car prices and brushing aside the credit and current economic risk issue..... surely that`s good.
Question,
Would you really feel safe, currently, borrowing on credit for a car you didn`t actually need?
Let`s hear the caution from the wise and experienced - a little insight or stories of what has happened to people you know, or have heard of, who have overstretched or encountered bad luck with `credit` car purchase and motoring.

Hi folks. I've been driving a Mazda Premacy (reg'd 2000) for the last 6 years and the thing that I liked about it best was the fact that it had three "proper" seats in the back. I was able to carry 3 adults and two children comfortably for hundreds of miles and still have room for a boot load of luggage.
I'd like to replace the Premacy with something (3 or 4 years old) that offers a similar seating arrangement (and preferably similar storage facilities) and I've looked at a VW Touran, but I don't know what else is out there (I would have considered a Mazda 5, especially since it has sliding rear doors, but they've made the middle rear seat narrower that the other two, so I've ruled it out).
Does anyone have any recommendations for suitable replacements for my Premacy?
Thanks,

This new "diesel" car has a 1.4L. petrol engine!
Confusing or what?

I reckon I've got at least another 20 years in me, this offer would save me a fortune.
I had the journey from Hell on Sunday, going from Sheffield to Heathrow.
The reason ? well there are 3 lanes on the motorways, but plenty of idiots do not move over to the left, so there is always 3 lanes going at 40-60 Mph, and as soon as someone brakes in any lane, everyone brakes and further back, the traffic is down to walking pace.
It was obvious thst the traffic would flow perfectly if people kept to the left.
The journey took 5 hours instead of the usual 2 1/2 and this is a major reason why our motorways are not working as they are intended.
What can be done to shake these idiots into driving properly ? Read more
Taking 5 hours on a Sunday afternoon from Sheffield to Heathrow has very little to do with lane discipline. It has far more to do with a volume of traffic well in excess of what the motorway can handle.
It was the same 20 years ago when Sheffield-Dunstable was a regular trip for me. The M1 on a Sunday afternoon was a nightmare.
2.5 hours Sheffield to Heathrow? When was this achieved, Christmas Day?
Before I blow £250+, am I right in thinking that if the battery's showing 27v and the headlights have popped then the voltage regulator's knackered and the alternator needs replacing? Read more
ECU would be self-regulating, though agreeably it's at the top end of what it will take.
You will all be aware of the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and the website ASKMID, where you can check that your vehicle appears on it. I changed companies in recent months and also changed cars since. The first car didn't appear and when I called the Ins. Co. they had to make enquiries and manually amend whatever needed amending in order for it to appear... i.e. if I hadn't checked it would never have appeared and the car would have remained vulnerable to Police action if they considered it appropriate. My new Jazz hasn't been put on there either and the Ins. Co. are again manually doing whatever they need to do to get it to appear. They reckon it's because the Jazz is called a 1.4 when in fact it's 1339cc (don't ask me any more - I don't know!)....but the point is if you don't check the database yourself you won't know you're not on it until you get stopped and told your car appears to be uninsured. The Ins. Co. said it's OK coz the Police can ring to check - but not at 11 at night they can't! Read more
I have advocated that before. Just as you might sue for wrongful arrest, then perhaps a few case against wrongly seized goods might help improve the system.
Thats why I never would buy a new car. Twice I saw careless drivers hit my towbar when parking behind me. It damaged them not me! Towbar hardly sticks out and ball is at about 18in height on van.
In supermarkets I see doors often flung open until stopped by next car. Car occupiers tend to be young with well used vehicle. Damage visibility depends on paintwork and you would notice it more on your car than others! Only protection is a wide sidestrip which would look untidy. Read more
I understand the idea has been dropped.

Terms and conditions are interesting - the first 3 are:
1. At participating Lexus Centres only.
2. For qualifying individuals only. Lexus Centre discretion to determine eligibility.
3. Subject to availability.
Well, that's them off the hook.
But the one that really gets me is number 20.
20. Test drive mileage limit of 200 miles.
(My nearest Lexus Centre is, wait for it, ...
198 miles away.)
