December 2008
In the next 6 months or so I'm hoping to be in the position to do away with the bangernomics Polo and get into something a bit more modern.
I could really do with an estate as I often find myself going to the local tip with all sorts of stuff and it's also going to be handy if/when we go on holiday next year.
I quite like the look of the BMW 3 series estate from 2002 until the new shape launched a year or 2 back.
What's the best engine for this car - quite fancy the 330d. Any horror stories?
Also what is an absolute must when buying a used beemer - things like service history etc?
Are there any better options I should also consider?
I do about 120 miles per day on average, although 200+ is not unusual. Read more

you will need to know the channel number & the value that you will need to enter.
If you haven't done it before i would recommend you leave well alone. be very carefull with the dash adaptions as you may well imobilize the car!
www.ross-tech.com may give you a better idea, but always use engine codes etc. Do not guess channel numbers & adaption values.

It ties in with the pattern on the FTSE100 which is similar to 1972-74. We are at the equivalent of December 1973 at present. (start dates are July as well). The FT Ord Share Index lost 70% of its value by Dec 1974: and then rallied 50% plus.
This time it's going to be worse...
The reasons are obvious. We've started a recession with a bank crisis. Any suggestion that the banks will not need to be bailed out again is for the faeries. But it is likely NO_ONE will lend to the Government by then .. let alone the banks.
Anyone who thinks this is going to be a short sharp recession is naive or called Darling.
That's fantastic!! I wonder if I could challenge Honda for the 20% shortfall my car has suffered from new? Read more
In comparison to this decision:

9.1 % could have been considered large. Here, Chrysler were being sued for the car being 3.3% less economical than the stated figure! The court concluded that although there could be considered to be a discrepancy, it was not significant and so the complaint was rejected. I guess the E-Klasse driver thought his chances were better.

...can anyone recommend one? Stepson has had a prang in our old Yaris. Front end is damaged; got him home, but can't tell much more because bonnet won't open. Only 3rd party insurance.
The only Reading garage (with accident repair) in HJ's directory is the Porsche dealership; not sure what they'd say if they were presented with a 1.0 Yaris...

{Yep. The clue is in the title of that thread ;o) }
The dipstick is jammed on my 2.0lt 20v Audi A4. Last Wednesday my car was in for a new thermostat, they did the job buy removing the alternator rather than the inlet manifold, no problem with that as that is the way most people do it. I went to check to oil on Saturday and the plastic orange guide tube came out with the dipstick, I refitted the tube (bit of a fiddle) but now the dipstick is stuck fast, it lifts about 1/2 inch and that's it, help! I have a long journey coming up and the only way I can check the oil is if the low oil level warning comes up on the dash.

My brother just "got off" a 65 in a 30 charge but were not sure how.
The story as follows;
He was driving home from work at about 5pm, going dark and a little bit of rain.
Was pulled over by a police officer who had a LTI 20-20 speed gun.
Proceeded to take ID off my brother and told him no fixed penalty but straight to court.
Brother wanted his day in court so decided to plead not guilty when the court paperwork arrived court was then supossed to reset a date for court appearence however for some reason they went ahead on the origianal date found him guilty fined £600 and 6 points.
Solicitor at this point told him to accept, my brother wanted his day in court so told solicitor no chance, when it went back to court on rearranged date the police "offered no evicence"
He was convinced the copper was sitting in his car when he pointed the speed camera at him plus should not be used in poor light and poor wheather conditions.
Any thoughts ? Read more

GM,
You've obviously been there, but I would add:
"Officer, you seem to regard evidence gathering... that you pre-judge will not be favourable to your case... as an inconvenience."
Sad case: tinyurl.com/6rzluh
It will be interesting to hear more of the modifications and just how they contributed to the 'accident'
As Fullchat says, case in progress therefore locked Read more
As this trial is still ongoing I think we should reserve comment at this stage.

Thanks all very encouraging.
I'm now slightly worried that the 3 series estate may not be big enough although 99% of the time it would only be me in the car.
Is the boot big or would I be better looking at a 5 series or something else altogether?
