I really enjoy this site but the organisation and layout is anything other than intuitive!
Is there an index of all John's video road tests somewhere?

Colleague just had the first service done to a Grand Vitara diesel at a main dealer. He was also told there was recall work on the 'pipe between the turbo and the manifold'.
When he got home , after a 30 mile journey, oil was dripping on to the driveway and the oil level further dropped, off the end of the dipstick, overnight. No leakage pre-garage visit.
Garage retrieved the car and subsequently reported the sump was cracked. All very courteous and loan car provided for several days. Fixed under warranty.
Any ideas what might have happened? Jack under the sump to enable the pipe to be changed is a possible. The engine undershield would have revealed any impact damage.

I would guess the dealer did something that they shouldn't have and managed to crack the sump. Hence why it was changed with the minimum of fuss and 'under warranty'!
My son's AX petrol has failed its MoT on emissions. It had a service including new plugs and air filter before the test and the garage suggest it might be the lambda sensor. Can I check what the resistances should be with a simple multimeter ? Anyone know what the values should be or where I could find out ?

What sort of driving does the car get? Lots of short runs which dont allow
the cat to fire up properly will gradually coat the catalyst with carbon...
Andrew,
Before the lad went to Uni, the car would have a brisk 15 mile hammer up the A1 to college and back 4 days a week. 2 or 3 times a week it would get a 20 mile run down the A1 to g/f's house and back (sometimes). The car has then stood for 3 months. I don't think pootling around has made the cat fail. Despite your kind recommendation, I think I'm going to put a new cat on.
50 in third ...
60 in third is the norm :-)
Thank you for your reply.
Hi Gents and any ladies
My 53 reg car won't start. The starter motor spins and sounds horrible but the engine does not turn over.
For the previous couple of days or so there has been a vibration coming back through the clutch pedal at around 1000 Rpm and there has also been the occasional noise coming from the engine bay that can best be described as violent pinking. Took the kids to school this morning and when I went back to the car it would not start. Spent the next 3 hours waiting for the AA man to come along. When he arrived he listened to the starter motor and said something about the flywheel falling off. Was eventually brought home on the back of a lorry.
I have searched the forum so I have a fair idea what it may be but would apprecite some input fom the assembled masses. A bill in excess of £1k I can do without right now.

Had some quotes today: If it is just the starter motor then £267. If it is the lot then £1100. Tis off in on Monday for a proper diagnosis.
It was closed for five hours this morning after an accident at Junction 9. Were any Backroomers caught there?
I was just joining at J13 at about 0730 when I heard the first warning on the radio (from BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, which doesn't often mention anything south of the M42, so that got my attention.) Retuning to BBC Oxford, I found they were talking of little else, so I got as far as J11 at Banbury, turned back and went home to work instead. (I'm fortunate to have that option.)
If anyone here wasn't so lucky, you have my condolences, and I hope your day got better.

Hi,
Just thought i'd post here, I actually know the owner of that car and he has indeed made a full recovery from that accident.
I have seen the photos provided to him of his vehicle close up and its amazing how anyone could have survived that crash.
God Bless.

I have a Peugeot 307 2.0 HDI. I have had the vehicle for aprox 5 months and had no problems with it until now. Yesterday whilst driving i lost selection of my gears, i pulled over and tried to rectify the problem, i managed to get 1st and 3rd gear, but no other. Has anyone else had this same problem, or have any ideas or solutions for this problem? Thanks Read more
My son had the same problem - it was an air lock in the clutch hydraulics. The system was bled and topped up and its now working OK
Please Help!
My car cuts out occasionally. Usually when I slow down, ie. to first gear or when turning the wheel severely.
Had it checked out, but the garage can't find anything.
Any idea for a now nervous driver!

I've suggested before that bus lane tarmac is colour coded so you know what the restrictions are at a glance, e.g. red for 24 hour, green for peak hours, etc. In my area it seems to change randomly from red to green depending on the location.
There is the problem that colour blind people might have problems with the scheme, so you would also need signs to back them up, but it would solve the problem for the vast majority of road users.
