Got an Mreg xantia. Front suspension knocks going over bumps, both sides. Done the antiroll bar link arms and checked the inner bushes which seem ok. Begining to think it is the top suspension mounts. Has anyone ever changed these? Looks as though you could just jack up the car and then undo the ram and pull out these mounts once the spheres are off and pipes disconnected. Would be grateful for any advice. Read more
Hello, Sorry I should have said it had an mot about 4 weeks ago and they were pretty thorough. I will check them but the knocking happens when you judge that the weight
has come off the strutt, after going up if you see what I mean.

Thanks for that Dave
Hi all
Friend of mine has a 2001 Ford Focus Ghia.
Couple of days ago she discovered a veritable pond of water in the rear passenger footwell. It hasnt rained for several days, so it must have been laying there for a good while, and the carpets are totally soaked. As far as I know the water is only in the back of the car.
Ive gone back on this site and found a couple of threads in which a similar problem has been encountered by others and linked to leakage through the pollen filter, but I havent a clue where this thing is to be found, nor how it causes a leak, and still less how it can be rectified.
Anyone any info?
Cheers. Read more
Hi there,
Are you sure there is no soggy carpet in the front? I had that problem a couple of weeks ago. Open the bonnet and on the passenger side is a rubber 'scuttle panel' which presses against the screen. There's two clips that hold it down and then 3 along the front. There is a seal that goes between the screen and this rubber 'scuttle panel'. When this gets removed to replace the pollen filter the clips get snapped and then upon replacement it does not get held tight against the screen. Dealers sell the clips, which you will have to bond back on, clean up the edge of the panel and the screen and put a new seal on (couple of quid). Its seems a common problem. I had a load of water in the passenger footwell, had to lift carpet and soak up with a towel. If its only i the back it could be something else thats wrong. Buts this is answer to the pollen filter prob.
hope that helps (sorry don't have photo)
New camera's installed last week in Theobald Street, Borehamwood/Radlett, Herts. help please as I would like to know the purpose.
The road already has 4 camera's, 2 at the each end of the road, 1-2 miles apart. GATSO rear facing on a speed limit of 40MPH. new camera's have just been installed about 10 yards past each GATSO on a new grey pole. These camera's are abou tthe size of a shoe box, horizantally placed with a lens on the small end. They are placed as I say about 10 yards past each GATSO so making them hidden by the speed camera.
The road has no turnings and only about 6 houses between the 2 sets.
Another camera (Identical) has also been installed hidden by the GATSO speed camera in Allen lane, Borehamwood about 2 miles away.
I thought at first they may be Average Speed, but they do not match the ones on the M1.
ANPR ? but then why would you need 2 pointing the same way about 1-2 miles apart on a road with no turn off, as you have to go past both.
ideas please

The ones SP is referring to seem to be a "supplementary" device just beyond the ordinary speed camera; in fact they were installed some time after the ordinary ones. I've always assumed, as they point downwards at a steep angle, and somewhat to the side, that they are extra flashlights aimed at number plates and operating in conjunction with the actual speed camera. There are some other examples of this "tandem" arrangement in the area.
I have a T Reg 106.. had for 3 yrs just reaching 100'000 miles!!! Had so many problems with this car, spent alot fixing and just seems to be one thing after the next..
So the exhaust broke from the engine last week (only had new cat fitted in may and tail pipe last dec), paid for that to be fixed.. then two days later the heat stopped being produced and temp light starts coming on then goes again, oh and its leakin oil. i had this problem last year, fixed rad and thermo seemed fine. Is this ths head gasket finallly going or could it be a something else????
I already this year had a new clutch, clutch cable and cam belt fitted (this seems to be screamin as much now as it did before had it done, new one only fitted in june), Is it worth carring on?? The garage just doesn't seem to be helpful, i just need to know the problem not wot it could be or may be??

The screaming cam belt will be the tensioner roller failing, should have been renewed with the belt. Had several instances of oil and coolant mixing as the oil seeps across the gasket, also makes a mess on the floor.
Hi folks
I have a Passat 130 TDI AWX. It had its 10000mile service about 5 wks ago.
However about 2 weeks after the service all of a sudden things have gone wrong. The engine is less smooth generally and when cold sitting at traffic lights there is a 'lump' every 3 seconds. The engine also sounds coarser or throatier and seems to be working harder to get up to speed. Fuel economy is worse and acceleration is less impressive. In second gear sometimes there is a really long turbo lag. The car is most problematic at low revs but mid range the car is operating as good as ever.
Please help

Could also be a coolant temp sensor issue -- as Peter says, see what fault codes pop up.
Right. I've got two and a half grand ring-fenced and I'm going down the auctions in Belle Vue. I've not been to one since I was a kid so I'm going to have a look (without my debit card so I'm not tempted) to get the feel, then next visit my hand goes in the air.
I see they have ex-MoD cars every wednesday, or I wonder if it's worth looking at general stuff. I'm after mondeo or vectra size, maybe a bigger petrol in a horrible colour, something dealers won't like!
I've read HJ's guide about twelve times so I kind of know the rules. What does the panel think - will I get a tidy Vectra for that kind of dough? It seems the MoD cars don't get slaughtered like ex-police ones do...

"Go for it!! the only people in the forces who get something like a vectra or mondeo are usually high rank officers, the rest of us have to put up (!) with astras and foci."
Not always true - just watch for the ex-mil cars with a tow-bar - they'll have been thrashed, and not because they went caravanning.....
Brixmis used to have Volvos - and they really got hammered - driving over farm tracks at 60 and getting pushed off the road by Soviet/FDR convoys.
My misses Picanto has just today, sprung a leak from its sump gasket, the end thats bolted to gearbox. Is this a random act or is it known to happen.
I personally think its a bit early for such things, so could there be a cause other than simple failure? Its only 4 years old and 35k. Read more

The oil pick-up in the sump blocks and destroys the turbo and the crank and bearings.
Fit a replacement engine. Repairs are not worth the hassle.
