I've recently got a 3.0i Z4 53 plate, very nice it is too, although not the best weather for it! Anyway in the not too distant future I'll have to put new front tyres on. They have runflats alround - can I replace with non-runflats? and carry some tyreweld and compressor? my thinking is better ride and cheaper....(the wheels are the 5-star design 18" I think). Cheers. I have noticed that when the engine running and the lights are all off, the odometer has started to glow & flicker. Though you cannot see any digits.
Is this the start of its decline or a lose earth? Read more

Oh, it is about motoring and pretty graphic if you or yours have been in a bump recently. Read more
They used to require RealPlayer and I resolutely refused to use it.
No longer the case now that you can use the BBC iPlayer which runs on
Flash.
However as you apparently in the USA you may have to use a UK proxy
on your PC to fool the BBC in to thinking you are logging in from
the UK:

The cylinder head gasket on my 93 (L) Peugeot 106 XND has just gone. Its not worth repairing so I am going to scrap it. I need to buy another but will only use it as a second car so I don't want to spend much at all.
Can anybody recommend a cheap (less than £1K), reliable, economical runabout that has airbags?
Thanks Read more
Suggest an Astra mk4 (the model which came out in 1998). 4* NCAP rating, passenger and driver's airbags and excellent on the motorway.
You should be able to get an early / high mileage one for £1000. (Although I wouldn't buy a pre-2000 1.7 diesel).
My wife demolished a metal gate and fence with our Astra. The car needed a new bumper, radiator and headlight. The gate still hasn't been repaired!
I beg HJ & the mods' indulgence for this one, as it is not strictly motoring, but it strikes me relevant enough to regular travellers not to be in a IHAQ thread, and I feel sufficient chastened and concerned to flag it up, and it hasn't happened before so it must be a recent change in their procedure
My job required me to spend at least one night a week away from home, and I stay at one of those budget chains - which it is is probably irrelevant. Today has been a busy day, all I want is a meal, a glass of wine and to put my feet up and forget it. Order meal, wine, eat meal, drink wine, go to pay bill. Girl gives me the card machine, slip card in, she looks silently at the other end of the bar, saying nothing, I haven't got my reading glasses on, assume the machine is asking for my pin, which I type in. She says
'that'll be £nn.nn, which is about 3 times what it should be - call manager and the first thing he says is 'I bet I know what your PIN is'. It's obviously not the first time this has happened, but the first prompt is not for your PIN, but how much of a tip you want to leave.
PIN number changed already, and I'll be raising the issue with the hotel chain and my card provider tomorrow, but this is a fundamentally poor procedure Read more
I am amazed that somebody will type his valuable PIN into a machine without knowing what he is typing in.
Being asked to provide a tip in this fashion is utterly standard.
the abs and traction warning lights are not going out ive replaced the rear sensors as i was told it could prob be one of the rear ones if the traction control light was on could it be a front sensor or wiring fault Read more

The wife and I are planning our first trip to Europe in our own car in the New Year so I thought I would enlist the help of the good folk on this site to get a few pieces of advice. We're planning to drive to the German Alps and the Black Forest so most of the driving will be in Germany with some in France/Holland depending on whether we cross from Hull-Rotterdam or the Calais routes (we live in Leeds, incidentally). It will be after the winter (we're not going for the skiing).
Also, incidentally, I have driven on the right before in America but with a left hand drive hire car. I have never driven on the right in a right hand drive car.
Questions that spring to mind are :-
What do I need to take (other than a yellow jacket each and a warning triangle)?
What European atlas would you all reccommend? We have in-built sat-nav but would like a quality atlas as a back up/reserve.
Are there any particular driving tips for the above countries to take heed of?
Which is the easier route for a first timer to the Bavarian Alps - the one from Calais or the one from Rotterdam?
Is there anything I should be doing to/with the car itself in preparation for such a trip? It is a Saab 93 1.9 Diesel Convertible which will be around 2 years old when we go and will have about 24000 miles on the clock. Up to now it has been completely reliable.
Is there anything else I should know?
Sorry there's a lot but any help would be appreciated. Read more
Seem to want to think that a lot of German houses have cellars.
An architect friend of mine told me not to buy a house without a cellar. The ground is generally soft/sandy and houses without cellars are built on foundations 90cms deep which move and crack on the soft ground.
Houses with cellars have deeper foundations where the ground is more solid. Less likely to subside.
In cities the blocks of flats have multi level car parks built underground as they need to go deep for the foundations and to help local parking.
Further to my post on Bosch Service Centres and the advice received - thanks folks, I am considering doing servicing and basic repair work myself.
I cannot get a Haynes Manual for the make and model of car but came across a web site called electonicmanuals.co.uk and they claim to offer the OEM workshop manuals via down load immediately.
Does anyone have any experience of these documents or this website. Read more
The Ford TIS DVD I have is brilliant. No use to me now mind.
Any one out there have any advice about the best value in hand held error code reader to plug into my passat. I think this would make servicing the car easier and some on the market- from brands ive never heard of - arent that expensive compared with the cost of early failure of say a cat converter Read more
Yep.
VAG-COM is *the* diag tool for vw.
Hi,
I've got a auto 406 with A/C that is leaking from somewhere into the passenger footwell. the water tastes like it's got anti freeze in it so does that mean the heater matrix is leaking or could it be the A/C?
Thanks Read more
Try and refrain from tasting antifreeze as it's poisonous.
oh, just one other thought, you might well have to inform your insurance company,
as you have "modified" the car.
yep sounds silly hu. but if you change a standard cd player for a halfords one costing half the amount the car manufacturer would charge for a replacement its still a modifcation aways from standard fitment.
and the insurance company might consider a car fitted with softer tyres than that it was designed for a safety issue, that might well have had an input in any accident that might occur....
