I have recently heard the road tax costs are changing. Can anyone advise me how much it would cost per year for a 1992 2.0l Honda Prelude? Read more

stunorthants26

Well a 92-97 Prelude 2.0 manual is currently £101.75 6m and £185 12M
Doesnt change in 2009 but rises in 2010 to £110 6M and £200 12M

I suspect that this is the same for any car of this age over 1500cc

More likely a linkage, or clutch/DMF issue.

If it does it again; try switching off the engine and seeing if it will go into gear then.

Wife's Sept 07 (57) plate Fiesta got rear ended today by a big 4x4. Car has been taken to Insurers Approved repairers and they have just rang to say it needs a new bodyshell so is beyond economical repair (write off) What happens next? Having been a long term member of site I have seen some comments on about not accepting first offer, Garage has said car was immaculate for a year old car not a single mark or dent before accident(she really looks after it) Parkers value a year old one with the same miles as £7005 dealer (to buy), £5930 Private good condition or £5480 p/x Will I be lucky to get anywhere near some of these figures if so which one? Do I have any recourse if they offer a stupid figure? Any advice tips from somebody who has been in a similar position would be appreciated. Read more

Luckily not been in this position before so as before any advice would be appreciated.

Lot of previous threads giving advice on write off values and your rights in case of a "non-fault" claim.

The main point to note is that if you make a claim on your insurance, their primary aim is to minimise their own costs [admin as well as repair/replacement costs]. They will ask you to use the "legal protection" part of your policy to claim back the excess, and once that has happened, you will be deemed to have had a "non-fault" claim.

On the other hand, if you persue the 3rd party direct [using Agents if you are satisfied about their T&C], then you will be better placed to be put back in the position you were before the incident.

Still trying to decide what to buy......looked at a Citroen Berlingo it's an 05 diesel 1.6 . HDi....Love the space, but felt odd that there is no rest for the left foot next to the clutch pedal. Also it seemed very noisy as in bodywork rattles. Felt nippy. The salesman seemed to be struggling when he reversed it into a parking space, unfortunately i didn't get a chance to try reversing it. They're asking £5995? 33,000 on clock. Anyone have any thoughts, we've been told Citroen can be expensive to repair. Would be glad of anyones thoughts please! Read more

dont want to confuse issue but a honda jazz might also be a good option
motus car warehouse has one in 22000 miles full honda history 05 £5499 1.2 cheap
nippy engine with the seat flat theres hell of a lot of space.

You could put a Jazz inside a Berlingo and still have space to film an episode of Top Gear. Seriously, I once carried two washing machines (one new, one dead) in the boot of my Pug Partner without putting the seats down. The Jazz isn't in the same league.

From the BBC website...

US carmaker GM has reported a third quarter operating loss of $4.2bn (£2.66bn) after Ford announced it lost $2.98bn during the same period. GM said it would run out of cash in the first half of 2009 if economic and market conditions did not improve. GM said it would cut jobs and costs and has also suspended merger talks with Chrysler to focus on current issues.

Ford meanwhile said it would cut salary-related expenses in North America by another 10%.

GM and Ford burned though $14.6bn in cash between them in the quarter. Read more

I agree with Mr Pendlebury. I remember great resistance by the banks to windfall taxes on their excessive profits not so many years ago...if only they'd put some aside for a rainy day eh?

My Legacy 2.0R is approaching it's third birthday and Subaru have written to me with extended warranty options.

The car currently has 35,000 miles on the clock and I do about 20,000 per year. The warranty can be extended for £329 or £621 for 12 or 24 months respectively, with a 60,000 total mileage cap, or alternatively £547 / £1,133 for 12 / 24 months unlimited mileage.

Now Subaru's are supposedly very reliable, (and mine has been totally reliable for the 25,000 miles I've owned the car), so does anyone think any of the above options are worth it, (I realise the 24 month/60,000 mile capped option is useless)?

P.S. Due to the current financial climate I'm not planning changing the car in the near future. Read more

I'm on Subaru no.7 at the moment - all started with the original Impreza Turbo back in ...... one of the first batch in the UK with lightweight aluminium bonnet.

Had Legacy 4-cam Estate, Legacy Estate Turbo, Forester, Forester Turbo, Legacy Saloon Turbo and now Outback - so all in all about 300,000+ miles and nothing has gone wrong. Only things needed have been routine servicing, tyres and exhausts. No mechanical or electrical failures in 10-15 years of motoring......

Hello chaps

I'm currently running a T reg Mondeo Si 2.0, bought on the cheap with 154k on it. Going great so far, however every once in a while I've been in slow moving traffic etc, given it a bit of gas only to find the engine's stopped! It seems to be just after I've reduced speed, and I think it's cutting out when the revs drop as I change down.

Not a massive problem at all to be honest as it always restarts - just thought I'd check it out on here in case there's a quick fix, or if it's a sign of worse to come! Suspecting sensors could be at fault - strangely though, I don't get any dash lights coming on as per a stall/usual engine cut out, so could it be a loose connection somewhere in the ignition system or perhaps water getting in (it's been wet each time it's happened)?

Cheers all

If the engine has stopped with the ignition on, then you should get the battery light and, eventually, the oil-pressure light coming on.

If neither does - and it restarts after cycling the key; then a loss of ignition feed is a distinct possibility.

It could be the key-switch itself, or a wiring issue; but my hunch would be the ignition main circuits relay.

Securing your car against a loan and you can still use the car

Heard this new type of loan on the radio today and really wondered how it works. Sorry if i is a dumb question but cant figure it out?

Do they;

Give you cash "payday type" loan up to value of car and you drive around in it and then hand it to them?

Effectively remortgage your car and "hire" your car from them?

With cars losing a lot of value every month, their guarantee is getting small every month whereas a house guartanee is getting larger every month. Then there is the question of having an accident, who dows the legal owner become? Is this a new thing, as I havent heard of it before

Can you explain how it works? Read more

Quickly read some web based complaints thread. Scary.
Some of the people taking loans are --- well naive is too kind a word. Probably desperate for cash.
Selling the car seems a better option as often car is repossessed and the borrower ends up owing £000s in unpaid interest..

So often people say, on here, how pleased they are with their tyres. What's that all about then? Some thoughts:

1. Snow tyres; yes, you can tell when you're well shod with snow tyres, I agree.

2. "Grippy" - if (save on ice) you start to lose grip, you're going far, far, far too fast.

3. Life. I remain to be convinced that you can measure the life of a tyre in most ordinary circumstances.

I can honestly say I have never, ever, noticed the effect of changing my tyres. Whether budget, second hand, premium or brand new. Does this make me a poor driver, a cautious driver, or merely immune to marketing?

Mapmaker:
To perhaps use a more correct term; Rotational acceleration force has been the enemy of the steel belted radial tyre since its introduction. At high speeds, and particularly when cornering, the belts will flex at their weakest points which are the edges.

over time this flexing can work its way inwards to the centre of the belts. If this happens a catastrophic belt separation can occur. This is why most European "premium brand" manufacturers fit nylon wedges at the belts edges, and in many cases now a full nylon overwrap ply. This nylon ply shrinks as it warms up and effectively holds the other belts together.

As I've just taken off the glovebox to fix heater fan resistor I thought I'd check the pollen filter. I think I've found it but can't work out how to get it out. It seems to be in two parts, but, the bottom is obstructed by fascia. Any advice. Thanks. Read more

Thank's, but, no help as the instructions must apply to later model Almera. I looked at puravent earlier, there were no instructions for pre 99 Almeras.
