Fuel's more expensive, cost more to maintain and service, and I hear endless stories of blown turbos etc. Gimme a petrol any day. Read more

Its boring though sometimes ;) because you can predict the response from the nick.

Rather like the dinosaurs recreated voice box being blown in a lab, in modern times and emitting that unique note.
It would be more entertaining if everyone took an opposite view to their `natural` one and wrote as though it were an assessed assignment.

We would start with Screwloose putting in 2,500 words on the deserved dominance of common rail and virtues of engine manufacture in India.
MichaelR, would write defining the virtues of saving the environment by driving an Axiam 500.
While PU could define the satisfaction to be gained by riding a Vespa rather than BMW bike.

Someone somewhere would write of the near 50% saving on diesel over petrol on multi-cold running stop start.

The dinosaur larynx would then emit its unique note from stage left and that would be the signal for everyone to mirror it in being their `normal` selves and in some cases call each other morons.

Hi all,

I've been looking at servicing my (E90) BMW , I've done various cars in the past but the BM has a slightly different set up as most of you will know!

I've looked underneath the car and found a "trapdoor" which appears to house the oil sump, mine is black with a 17mm black bolt but this points straight down, unlike other cars I've had it would mean you can't use a regular ring spanner to undo the nut, can someone let me know if this is actually the oil sump nut before I undo it?!

Also the oil filter access is very restricted and has a metal cover to prevent easy access! If anyone needs to know where to get hold of the tool oil filter cup wrench I'm happy to give a recommendation if you want to send me a message. I found it pretty damn hard to get the tool!

(sorry if this in the wrong section, new to this!)

Thanks for your help

cheers Dude

Is it still possible to do it the "traditional" way, via the "trapdoor" bolt? I planned on sorting this weekend before I leave it with the wife as I need to go away for work..

Thanks

Having recently changed from a 51 almera tino 2.2di to the more powerfull 05 2.2dci.
I find that:
1/ The clutch pedal is a lot heavier, is this a cause for concern?
2/ Fuel consumption is up by about 10% Read more

This is probably a general point not specific to the Nissan, so any car which seems to have a heavier than normal clutch may have a similar problem. If it is a problem!

Because of health I now drive very little - less than 1000 miles per year

I have a year 2000 Micra MKII manual 1.0

Is it still necessary to have a full service every 12 months? If not which bits should I still get done?

For instance it seems to that I might not need an oil and filter change based on miles, but shoud the oil and filter be changed anyway based on 12 months

Thanks for any thoughts on this

will most likely to be full of rust by that time too as them Micras
do have a bit of habbit of getting rusty underneath (many have new sills now).

yeah, my last micra from 1994 needed new cills and also welding on the suspension front and back

I think the update in 1998 was supposed to help with this

SWBO went for a pair of tyres yesterday, after ringing round she decided not to go for budget tyres (I was buying them after all !), but to go for branded tyres and she wanted Pirellis as that was what was fitted originally.
Anyhow off she goes to a local place that had quoted her £47 incl fitting, balancing and carcass disposal, per tyre. When she gets there they said they had not got the Pirellis in stock and offered her another tyre for £37 so she said ok. It turned out that £37 did not include fitting etc and she ended up paying £49 per tyre, which she objected to and was refunded the difference.
The tyres fitted were 185 65 14H BF Goodrich Profiler 2 which are priced at £59 each on mytyres and, according to the BF Goodrich website, are a relatively new version and by all intents and purposes seem to be a very good tyre and better than the Pirellis.
I was wondering if any backroomers had fitted these tyres and if so how do you rate them ?

Kith the BF Goodrich car tyres did not do very well in the Which tests.

Were they the Profiler2 in the tests ?
By all accounts they are a "performance" tyre.
I would find a new tyre firm as well.

That's a definite foregone conclusion, once bitten twice shy as they say and there are plenty of suppliers to choose from in the rotherham & sheffield area.

"Against the equivalent" Equivalent in what? Price? size? cost? colour?

If it`s the latter, couldn`t the equivalent (technically) be a `Nutto-gibbly` off a 1932 wheelbarrow and still be OK as described?

I would be more impressed with these things if manufacturers compared the new product with their own current top of the line tyre range. Thereby removing any possible Mystic Meg factor - in not knowing exactly what its being measured against.

Hi all, my thirsty old car is costing me a fortune. I have recently bought it, with 90k on the clock and it drinks petrol like I do beer.

It is currently doing 260 miles on a full tank of fuel. Now I know autos use a lot of fuel but this seems ott.

Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated, because today in heavy traffic I did 42 miles and used a quarter tank.
