I have a corolla 1.6Gli 1994. The gearbox is occaisonaly becoming difficult to getinto 1st gear, and occasionally going from 2nd to 3rd it feels a bit crunchy. Sometimes it is hard to pull itout of 5th or 4th to change down.
These problems are only intermittent, it will often drive OK for several days.
When I next have the car serviced, is it possible to change the gearbox oil to improve things/extend the life of the gearbox and what type of fluid/oil should be used ?
Someone has also suggested the clutch is getting worn. Have to say the bighting point is quite high. Is there any adjustment possible on this (Its hydraulic - change fluid/bleed/adjust ?? ))
Mileage is 130,000

I have soaking wet carpets and footwell on passenger side. Seems to only happen when it's been raining but can't see an obvious place that the water could be coming from. Also, has started happening since car has not been driven as frequently as it used to be. Not sure if that can have anything to do with it. Read more
Not sure if it has been mentioned here but the Daily Mail is running an article today stating that Dodge is basically offering 2 for 1 on their cars now. Read more
Deal must have been OK as they are now all sold

Is there any such thing as a left-wing car enthusiast? I've noticed that the Guardian isn't particularly hot on the subject. Read more
Perhaps I should have said 'near-side wing' and 'off-side wing'!
can anyone help with a problem our nissan micra 2002 1.0 auto has developed. it starts no problem and like normal when getting warm it holds itself in a lower gear to keep the revs high to warm up faster. but unlike normal when it is at normal temp it just wants to keep reving at higher revs. example
if at 30mph its at 1400 revs for no reason it jumps upto 2000revs and still doing 30mph and more often than not will not engage final drive ( 5th gear ). now i know to chech the level of gear oil which i did. and it was not pink so i have changed the oil and its not pink but still i have this problem. if i was a betting man id say if this was my twist n go scooter that the belt is slipping and thus not moving the variator out far enough to engage its last gear postion. thanks for reading Read more
Interesting test.
Three things strike me about the new Ka.
1. The pricing - starting at £7995 it is very close to the Fiat 500 - at £8100, and also to the new Fiesta at £8695. In fact, the new Fiesta is currently available from Drivethedeal at £7961. So the new Ka is not cheap. However, the old one was not cheap when it was launched in 1996 - it was priced in Fiesta territory, and it was not until around 2002 that it became possible to get them for £5000.
2. The fact that while the Fiat 500 offers two different sunroofs, there is no sunroof available on the Ka - and more surprisingly, it seems no sunroof will be available on the Fiesta either - unless I missed something.
3.The words "8 year no perforation body warranty" at the bottom of the price/specifications page. That is the really important bit!

My only worry would be the FIAT connection i've never really had much luck with
them - my last Punto in 2001 was dire and cost FIAT more to repair
than it did to build it new! (their words not mine)
Hi - they've moved on since then. My Grande Punto has just passed 28,000 miles in around 18 months with no trim, finish or reliability problems. Maybe I've just been lucky - though the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty suggests otherwise. I do have the oil changed half way between services as the recommended interval of 18,000 miles seems too long for comfort.
hi guys bit of an unsettling one recent days i have found when i an steering round a corner or going round a big roundabout my steering will pull it self into the direction i an steering i.e. If i steer quarter turn it will pull it to half a turn its an odd one to explain its not the tyres as all are new or replaced in last 6 weeks wheel alignment was also done brakes replaced 3 months ago all fluids at good level this has caused me to skid and have had a few near misses needless to say not being driven right now. It has 120k on the clock as always thank you in advance for any suggestions very much appreciated Read more
What were the road conditions at the time? No chance that this is new tyres on salt?
I was going up to Preston today in a friends clio, according to her speedo she was doing 80mph, her sat nav (tomtom) was saying 72mph. Which one of these is most likely to be accurate?
It just seems so amazing the difference. I am guessing she must have been doing 75mph. Read more
"Mr Cruncher your speed was measured at 46mph with a traceable measurement error of less
than 0.1mph while travelling in a 40mph zone - you're nicked!" would be a more
technically acceptable way of presenting the data.
When I received a speeding ticket here in Germany, it said something along the lines of:
Measured speed = 43km/h
Amount deducted for possible measurement error = 3km/h (might have been 5, can't remember)
Amount deducted for possible instrument error = 10%
Actual measured speed = 36km/h -> therefore you're nicked (limit was 30)
So i bought a second hand Laguna 2 3.0 2002 and i love it but recently i've noticed a problem.
If i'm stopped and in auto, when i let go of the brake and push the accelerator there is a jerk and then the power comes. I've played around with this and i found that there is about a second delay between when i let go of the brake and when the throttle kicks it with a little jerk, however if i release the brake and then jump on the throttle right away there is a large jerk. This only happens in the full auto mode and is getting rather annoying.
Anyone know if this a known issue or whats wrong? Read more
If it is gearbox then it sounds like a lazy solonoid if a drain down and refill does not improve matters then its a strip down job.
The problem isn't the gearbox, it's the clutch not clearing properly.
Check the clutch fluid level.
