One of the good things about this forum was reading some of the excellent posts by a poster called 'Aprilia' (mentioned in another thread this morning). Not seen any posts from him for a long time. What happened, was he banned?
He posted very informative technical information on many occasions and some stuff on my Subaru that enabled to 'outwit' the dealer and probably saved me some money! Read more

Very likely the c/case breather causing the problem.Squeeze one of the breather hoses with a pair of pliers and the idle settles down it is very likely to be the breather.

My Honda Accord is making a roaring sound when driving (louder at higher speeds). I'm pretty sure that the wheel bearing (driver's side) is worn out, confirmed as "probable" by a driver from the local Honda garage who dropped the car back to me after servicing.
The only thing is I'm 3 weeks away from relocating to the US, and I don't want to spend money getting it fixed before I go (don't need to sell it - my company is refunding me the cost of letting it go).
Is it dangerous to keep driving with it the worn wheel bearing - what can go wrong with it, and is it dangerous? Is it sensible for me to get it fixed for safety reasons?
Any help appreciated. Read more

Howdy folks!

Are know you lot on this board have the answer to everything!

Therfore may I ask, now diesel is 10p a litre more expensive than petrol. Is there a benefit to owning a diesel for 20k miles of motoring per annum?

I'd be looking to swap a manual 1.9 TDI passat (130)

for an............ automatic 1.8 petrol Volvo V40

Can anyone advise me on the potential difference in fuel costs?

Alternatively tell me which other estate to consider upto £4k

Thanks in advance

Interesting DP. I did a similar calculation based upon my current car with a 2.0 diesel engine over 40k miles per year versus a 1.8 petrol version of the same model. The diesel still has a £1000 per annum cost advantage in terms of fuel usage. However, if you then factor in that a petrol model can be bought for averagely £2500 less than the diesel the difference in actual running cost does not now come to any advantage until 2.5 years of ownership. Of course you can / have to build in a figure for relative depreciation. You also take another view that you are paying the fuel cost over the 2.5 years as opposed to finding it upfront.
Overall though, even on relatively high mileage it is no longer as clear cut as it was.

Good morning,

The newsreader on Classic FM this morning made me drop my copy of The Beano in shock when he announced that the Government ( bless 'em) are seriously thinking of sending £80 fines to the registered keeper if anybody is seen throwing litter out of the car and not just the afore-mentioned keeper.

Is it just me or is this totally unnacceptable? If a passenger is caught not wearing a seatbelt it is they who are fined.

We saw only recently what our leaders thought of decent people of our country when
many of the countryside alliance protesters were virtually beaten up. They weren't rent a crowd
louts on a drinking and pillage binge but you'd never have known it.

Same thing happened just up the road from here during Foot and Mouth. Plod OTT with video cameras ripping cameras off tax paying folk. ADOLF!!

24 years with a clean licence, must have done a million miles driving around the country in previous jobs, nowadays 99% of my time is spent driving a Citroen C15 diesel van that couldnt speed if it wanted to.
Borrow 'er indoors Pug for an hour and bosh lasered doing 80 in a 70mph limit.

Had to tell someone so where better than TBR.

Darn it!

Hi All,

My wife ownes a Renault Scenic 04 VVT 1.6 petrol. Since we bought it as prereg (UK car) very occasionally you would hear a rattle on start up (May be once every 3-4 months) and then every thing would be fine.

Mentioned it at 18K Service but not recorded as jobcard.

Anyway car went out of warranty last September and I decided to google the fault and realise its a very common problem caused by the dephaser pully but will cost around £500 to fix. The good news was many people had theres fixed by Renault FOC as its a known fault.

The bad news is the day before rining them up and finding out this I had the car serviced at an inderpendant garage (Used correct Oil spec etc) however used unipart oil filter. This is not garage fault as it was out of warranty I did not specify for them to use OE parts.

Anyway Renault Customer services asked about this and now refuse to help at all.

So the moral of the story is even if your car is outside of warranty, may be worth asking your independant garage to use genuine parts as if something major goes wrong you are more likely to get a good will gesture from the manufacture.

I guess we live and learn!!

So our car is going to live with this occasional rattle now! Lived with it for the last 3 years so a few more should not matter!

Cheers

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I appreciate they are under no obligation to help as its outside warrantee but agree its a well known fault.

Trouble is Renault UK are calling my bluff and stating I will have to pay for a diagnosis anyway first and that they are very unlikely to help as the car has been touched by a 'non reneult' garage.

Having just paid out for new battery, a service and also the Cam sensor which failed last month I don't think I am going to push anymore.

Just paid out a load of money and to pay another £70-£90 for a diagnosis to then be told no we won't help you is to much of a risk. Think I will just live with the fault.

Cheers
