Hi,

I posted another thread about problems with lights flickering on the car which turned out to occur when the regen started on the FAP every 400 miles or so. So I thought I should start another thread which would highlight the problem better and someone with experience of the regen process might spot. So sorry for some repeating of info.

Basically it seems that every 400 miles or so my car goes into its FAP regen cycle but when it does there is a relay that randomly clicks in the glovebox (probably in the BSI unit). This appears to happen due to the computer systems trying to load the engine by turning the heated screen and other such items on. However when the relay clicks the head lights flicker briefly :(

If I'm on the motorway the relay clicks and the lights flicker, this wouldn't be a problem if this just happened at the start of the regen process but the clicking continues many times whilst the regen is being carried out (probably for 12-30 miles).

People have mentioned this maybe a battery issue which it maybe but before buying a new battery I'd like to get my mind clear why the relay would be clicking on and off a fair bit durring the regen and why in the past I never noticed it doing this.

Any thoughts ????

Thanks for the advice

Heading South on the M1 last week, I was moving at a fair speed in the second lane overtaking an Artic.
Suddenly a Golf blasted past doing about 90MPH, cut in front of me, then making as though to move into the right lane.

Nothing exceptional about that. But his right rear tyre was a miss shaped blur, with smoke pouring off it. I flashed him a few times as he accelerated away and he almost lost it as he moved into the right lane, then swerved across my front, between two artics and onto the hard shoulder.
It made me wonder how long he had been losing pressure in that tyre, not noticing the different feel, or for that matter the smoke.

Are some people now driving without awareness of tyres, punctures, pressure loss etc?

A few years ago, I also saw someone in the city driving slowly on the wheel rim, (flat tyre flapping) looking unaware and unconcerned.

It's funny you say there aren't more people that help others out. Just before I heard the 'wheelbarrow' coming down the road, I had just passed a group of lads, who started laughing and shouting abuse at what I realised was the car.
Had they actually stopped and helped the guy, (if they knew how!) maybe they would be £10 better off! Glad they didn't though! It was my little girls birthday next day, and that money bought her an extra present! lol

on my way home last night the battery warning light came on shortly followed by a burning smell. As I slowed to a halt a column of thick black smoke began to pour out around the edges of the bonnet. Having been in two car fires before I feared the worst, stopped, ignition off and leapt out pulling the bonnet release as I went to aid extinguisher access. The smoke intensity decreased so I opened the bonnet and once the rest of the smoke cleared could see nothing wrong, all the wiring looked ok as did everything else.

Pause for your guess as to what had happened:

it turned out the alternator had seized and the smoke was the drive belt frying itself on the crankshaft pulley - never had this happen to me before in 30 odd years of motoring. Off to phone around now for the best price for new ones. Anyone else thought the worst about something that turned out to be fairly minor? Read more

A fried asked me to look at her 206 which was making an awful, awful noise when driven. She thought it was the gearbox or driveshaft.

The hubcap had fallen off and was rattling around in the wheel trim.

For several years I have watched the antics of a man who regularly follows and overtakes me on my journey to work. He leaves his headlights on full beam, tailgates until he gets an opportunity to overtake, and then cuts in, all done without indicators.
It's not just me - he works his way up a line of traffic all going at a reasonable speed on a single carriageway A-road. He cuts people up, gets flashed by oncoming drivers, but seems not to notice anyone else.

Well today I passed the scene of an accident that must have happened about 5 minutes after he passed me. He had clearly run into the back of someone. Both cars looked slightly crumpled. He and the other driver were standing, unhurt.
A few minutes on I passed an ambulance, and then a police car, with lights on, presumably going to the scene.

I sincerely hope no one was seriously injured. But I can't help the feeling of I told you so, because he really was a man looking for an accident. Read more

It eventually comes to them

surprised an avensis driver was doing that; would have expected it to be a bmw driver :D

anyway, i had some guy in a lexus 220d or 250 act like this on my way to work. He overtoke everyone, every single day. Around the same time there was some guy on a bike that used to do about 100mph driving down the middle of a wide A-Road non stop all the way down it.

I haven't seen either since and i used to see them both everyday.

Possibility they both changed their car/bike. But it could have also come to them.

Its horrible to think of accidents but some people are completely reckless and i can't stand bad driving esp. when it involves other peoples lives esp. kids in the back on their way to school.

Something is amiss with the rear nearside brake on my car.

Afer three miles or so, when "something" has got hot and expanded, there is a constant high pitched squeal from this one wheel. Applying the brakes makes it stop - if they were worn i'd expect the opposite !

Its done 40000 miles, and I've never had to replace brakes at his mileage before.

There are discs all round, and looking at the outer surfaces there are no gouge marks. The handbrake seems to operate as it should - no change in behaviour.
MPG doesn't seem to be suffering, and the car doesn't pull when braking.

After a 10 mile run on the motorway last night, the wheel and brake disc were very hot, and the others were cold.

There is friction somewhere. A sticking caliper ? Handbrake not releasing properly ? Does this model have a separate drum brake for the handbrake, or is the existing pad and disc used ?

Local fast fit place will do work, but I'd like a second opinion beforehand !

Thank you Read more

99% sure the handbrake uses the same pads as the footbrake. *could* well be a sticky caliper. Only way to know for sure is to take the wheel off and investigate.

My Altea is a 2.0 (FSI) Sport automatic, I have had it from new, there is 52000 miles on the clock, and it is 3.5 years old. {so approx 2004 then? I'll add it to the subject header, as per the requests mentioned here and there}

In February this year, 2008, I had a major fault with the coils to the engine (sorry I have the error code somewhere but could not find it this evening), which when checked at my SEAT dealer was identified as a problem only applicable to the 2.0 petrol automatic engines used in the first three months of the model being launched (my engine fell into this category) that required the engine coils to be replaced free of charge. The coils were replaced at the beginning of March 2008.

I had reported this problem to my dealer at least 3 times in the previous years but they always said, no trace of fault on computer printout. After the major problem occurred I developed a water loss, on average .25 ltr/500 miles. My dealer pressure tested the engine at the beginning March when the coils were replaced, but advised me that there was no trace of a leak. The problem of water loss continued, and today the car was left at the dealer and they have phoned me to say that the head gasket has blown and gave me an estimate of the likely repair cost.

I have told them that I am not happy with this.

I told them that I suspected that the coils failure, which caused very erratic misfire on three cylinders, was the cause of the head gasket blowing.

Am I correct? Any guidance would be appreciated.

I have asked my dealer to contact SEAT and ask that they accept an out of warranty repair.

Thanks Ken6, thats really useful info. The car is leaving large puddles on the drive now so it might be time to take it back to the dealer.

Hello again,
I failed my MOT the other day with a report saying that

'(both front)brake disc excessively pitted [3.5.1h]'

What does this exactly mean, as i have had a look at the disc's with a friend of mine who know a lot about cars, and he seems to think that they are fine.

can some one explain what that means?

(would a picture help?)

topbloke

yes it would however if they are exccessivly pitted then i would expect the brake effiency to be low, have you checked the inner edge, they tend to rot/corrode and the pad only use's half or less of the face, the tester has only a few choices of failure to choose from and the description may not be accurate, may be worth a word and see exactly what he means

Got the same problem on my 3 week old 2009 Mazda 6. Dealer says it's an acceptable problem to have condensation in front or rear lights providing it clears within 24 hours. I told him it's been 3 weeks and his answer was that it was to be expected in the winter.

So i guess, the 24 hour thing only applies in the summer. He didn't use his extensive level of intelligence to define summer for me, so i'll just assume it's when i can turn the aircon on!!!

I don't think i'll be getting my car services at Letchworth Mazda in future!
