Im currently thinking about buying a brand new Kia Carens; they seem to be great value and not badly built. Anyone got ownership experience please? I was thinking of the 2 litre petrol. The sort of info im not really after is that "they dont feature interior soft touch plastics etc". (I dont sit in cars pressing the dashboard so that really doesnt bother me). The 5 year warranty seems brilliant; but what are they like to own and run? Is reliabilty a problem, is servicing cheap, what are spares priced like? That sort of stuff. Any info most welcome. Hi, I'm Ness and new here. I'm looking to buy an 8 seater now that my old galaxy is dying so that I will finally be able to fit all my family into one car. I have up to £8,000 to spend max, and would really like something to last me as long as possible. It will probably end up doing a lot of motorway miles unfortunately. I have heard that I should avoid an estima from a few people who've owned them and have had the head gasket go. I've also been told to avoid the Fiat Ulysse, though the Peugeot and the Citroen versions should be OK if a diesel with an HDi engine. That's the sum total of what I have been told.
Does anyone have any comments to help me make a decision?
Thanks, Ness. Read more
I believe the newer shape started in 2000.
The problem models are the older imported Estima and Lucida diesels. The diesel engine wasn't offered in the UK spec Previa. The newest plate for the imported diesels will be P or R reg.

Interestingly Britain's oldest Peugeot is the same age as Britain's oldest Peugeot owner:

i need to purchase a new set of drill bits , for general jobs on cars and such..probably the odd stud removal etc . what brand /type cuts the best and stays sharp well
id also like a set of reverse drill bits...any idea where id find those Read more
I find Cobalt ones ideal for car & workshop use. I use HSS ones for drilling ally & wood. I also use a drill sharpener to keep a good edge on them. I was trained to freehand sharpen drills but have a jig unit driven by a power drill for the chipped & broken ones.

I am wondering what happens to the zinc layer on a galvanised panel when it gets repainted. I mean not due to an accident, but for instance under paint warranty due to a manufacturing defect in the paint. How can they remove the old paint without damaging zinc layer? Would it not affect corrosion protection of the panel?
Kostic Read more
yes for light surface damage the original paint is just lightly sanded and painted over
heavier damage that requires grinding and sanding to bare metal will remove the galv coating and rust may set in sooner than an original panel....you often see older audis that have one rotten arch or door bottom where its been repaired and the rest of the orig paintwork is still v clean
Clutch cable has gone.Got car stuck in first gear attempting to drive to garage for replacement job.Took a lot of effort to get out of gear and something broke in the process. It felt to me like the gear linkage. The garage have told me the linkage is ok and the problem is in the gearbox. the clutch cable is being fitted now. Will have to consider repair, reconditioned, or breakers yard gearbox I suppose. Anyone got any advice? Read more
Thanks for the replies. It turned out to be a broken retaining clip?on the ball joint on the gear lever if that makes sense.I'd seen previous warnings posted here about the infernal clip which is why I didn't attempt the job myself.Much cursing from the garage though.I feigned ignorance and paid up gratefully.
Hi - an issue I have with my Golf is in wet weather. On more than one occasion in wet weather I pull away, the car begins to jerk/misfire and then the engine (emissions) warning light comes on. For the rest of the journey it feels like the car isn't 'firing on all cylinders' and struggles to accelerate. The problem only goes away when the car is unused for a period of time (usually a few hours or overnight) to 'dry out'.
Any thoughts? Many thanks. Read more
give the ignition leads plugs & distributor cap a good spray with WD40.
Or better still replace them......
What do you expect, or have experienced, with the various breakdown services? For example a headlight bulb on a long night trip.
Assuming you are travelling overnight to get to a ferry, your car is one of those that needs some dismantling, but you carry a spare bulb.
In other words, what `situation` entitles you to service if its other than outright conking out and being immobilised?
What experiences have you had in such `modern situations`

a dismantling job on many cars (apparently even cars as mundane as Ford Ka need
the wheel arch liner undoing).
A bit off topic, but you don't need to take out the wheel arch liner to change the headlight bulb on a Ford Ka. What you do need are long fingers, a screw driver, a good source of light to figure out what is attached to where and how, as bulbs only seem to go when it's dark and raining, a lot of patience and noone in the vicinity to get upset about your swearing. I know, I have the badly scuffed knuckles to prove it!
I have just changed the turbo on my 406. Unfortunately this was not the problem there seems to be oil/water burning inside my exhaust system. but not in the cylinders. Can someone tell me what the problem is so i can fix it please
diesel/petrol engine ? Read more
Have you got any oil in the water or water in the oil. This could be a hairline crack in the head. When you had the turbo off did you remove and inspect the exhaust manifold ports.? Regards Peter

There´s a Carens, 2003 CRDTi near(ish) me for ?3995, only done 124K KM. I´m quite tempted. I really want a 7 seater though. Seems like a good price - what does the BR think...?
