Have had this Mk2 golf for 9 years and 70k of its 160k miles. Generally fine car, but some problems with the Pierburg carburettor, and it has always had trouble starting after overnight heavy rain - especially in the last two days!
Plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm seem ok (and been changed several times in 9 years). Breakerless ignition - I still don't really see where the spark comes from! Is there an electronic box somewhere that could be getting damp? Under the cracked plastic cover over the wiper motor? Should I risk cracking it up more to investigate?
Can anyone help?

Can anybody tell me the correct setting for normal use of climate control. Do I use "Auto" or "Full Auto". Honda Accord 2003.
In "Full Auto" turned down to minimum the yellow "recycle" light comes on, is this correct or should the setting be left in "Auto".
The Honda handbook is not clear to me, or am I misreading something.
I have been advised to use "Full Auto" all the time, on a hot day I turn the setting to the lowest setting and the "Recycle" light stays on.

Hello gudgejudy. I admit I too find it confusing that you have a system that shows "auto" and "full auto". I would have understood if they used the terms "auto" and "semi-auto".
Here is a link to a web site where an owner of a Saab tries to explain how the "auto" and "semi-auto" climate control system works on his car:

Can anyone recommend a good independent garage in Edinburgh? My daughter's 1994 VW Golf TD needs servicing and MOT. Previously this was attended to by a small independent in Belfast but now she is a junior doctor in Edinburgh she needs somewhere reliable and relatively close to the city centre. Any suggestions?
Thanks alfalfa Read more
Not exactly in Edinburgh but only a few miles out in East Lothian - Bradbury Motors in Cockenzie/Port Seton (0800 9752806 ) and Kiln Garage in Longniddry (01875 853178 ). Or in Edinburgh, Greenend Motors off Lower London Road (0131 659 5055).
Used them all - no complaints whatsoever.
Having purchased a 2004 2.0 Petrol C5 VTR 2 months here are my comments.
Fuel economy commute now around 31/32
Fuel economy long journeys 35-36
Even hit 36.5 on long journey to Wales this weekend and this was with some mixed driving too.
2000 Miles of motorring so far has been faultless. The rear brakes did need re-aliginging but this is a known c5 issue.
The car is very quiet and rides the motorway so quietly, any other car i ride in now seam to have hard suspension. Seats also very comfotable.
Overall for a car that cost me only £5000 with 30 K on the clock i am very impressed.
If you don't mind taking a risk buy one.
I used VTS in Warwick to sort the brakes and was £120+ VAT very helpful service and they certainly know ther citroens.
2.0 Petrol is nice to drive and has the power when required, did think of a diesel but me not used to them and know that some TDCI's can be a pain to fix when they break so stuck with petrol. Read more
Hi all
This is my first post, although I have been reading for some time. My wife's 206 has suddenly developed a problem. When starting the car, the indicators flash a couple of times, and now this problem is starting to occur randomly whilst driving.
Also, yesterday the rev counter packed up, although apparently the speedo is still working.
Sounds like dodgy French electrics, but it is an otherwise exremely reliable car. Any ideas, or suggestions as to how to fix?
Thanks Read more
A dodgy indicator stalk is a known weak point and several 206's have had them replaced under warranty. A colleague had a 4 year old 206 indicator stalk replaced free by peugeot dealer but a 7 - 8 year old car maybe they won't. I guess it will not be too costly to replace.
Rev counter maybe sender unit on engine or fault in instrument panel, but hopefully someone with direct experience can give more advice.
I've recently bought a new honda jazz 1.4 SE to replace an indentical model that was 5 years old. I'm very disappointed to be getting around 10mpg less for indentical journeys. I'm a "green" driver with a very gentle right foot. I've never had a brand new car before. The Honda dealer says its because its still "running in". How many miles is the running in period, and should there be this much difference? Read more
We were telling that one in Yorkshire in the 1950`s ;);)

Seeing the link below about a face lift A3 coming out probably answers my point.
I am looking at getting a golf or A3, have been looking for a while and the Audi website seems to have lowered their prices and offered 2 year Warranties if you buy by the end of April.
My question is I have seen a 2004, 47K, 1.6 MPI special edition at £8250. This seems good value compared to golfs I have been looking at.
I know it has done higher than average milage but I only do 10K a year so I will soon bring it down.
Does this seems a good buy?? Read more
Anyone know when the new/facelifted Audi A3 is due? Particularly the 5 door Sportback? Read more
I dunno...the prices people pay for an Audi that's a VW that's a Seat that's a Skoda.
Mind you, if they shoved a Bentley grille on it...
There is a TCI-H ignition switch unit on a heat sink under your cracked plastic cover. This area gets full of leaves and water, check the drain holes are clear. You can get a much stronger plastic cover from VW, but if I remember correctly it is not cheap.
