Hi
Please can you advise.
C Class estate, 1999.
I have had a flat battery. RAC have advised that this is due to an intermittent fault with the cooling fan coming on after the engine has been switched off. Removal of the relevant fuse prevents this happening and RAC guy advised to take this out when parked to prevent battery running down again. Sometimes the fan comes on when the engine is switched off and other times it doesn't.
Any advice what this could be?
Many thanks Read more
It is possible that the cooling fan module is faulty. This may be attached to the cooling fan motor itself or may be located on the inner wing panel.(models vary). It is usually a silver aluminium box with large diameter cables connected to it.hth
Hi,
My diesel engine has been drawing in air since I had it serviced at 126000 miles causing all the normal associated problems. The mechanic, who carried out the service at first thought it was a badly seated filter but then told me it was a missing core plug in the filter housing which he replaced and liquid metal-ed over to prevent it working loose again. However the fault reappeared one week later and having more time I took a look myself. I noticed at the back of the filter housing, close to the top, is an orifice blanked off with a core plug on the drivers side and on the passenger side, under the large dollop of liquid metal applied by the mechanic, I found not a core plug, as I had been informed, but some sort of a 'valve'. This has a plastic body with the tip of a stainless steel pin poking out about 1/8". I can push the pin into the plastic body against a spring pressure and by gripping the pin with a pair of pliers it can be completely withdrawn from the housing. The pin is about 1" long and 1/16 in diameter. When I operate the fuel priming pump diesel fuel is emitted from the join between the housing and the pin; so presumably air can also be drawn in here. What is this 'valve'? and can anyone venture an opinion as to what could have caused it to fail? bearing in mind the car had just been serviced! The top of the filter housing is stamped with the numbers 4, 2, 5.The engine is a TUD 5 1500cc diesel unit.

My wife has an 02 Corsa, 1.0 12v. I know the timing chain is a bit rattly and it's on the things to do list. My really urgent problem is that the car ran fine until I left the radio on while working on it for the MOT and the battery ran flat. I charged it the next day. It is now running like a bag of bolts. There is a distinct dip in power when starting off almost to the point of it stalling if you do not keep the revs up and it now sounds like my blinking diesel Vectra. There is no power when driving and it takes a long time to accelarate up to 55-60. I took the rocker cover off for a look and the entire inside was a mess, there was a serious build-up of black clay gunge everywhere including in between the camshafts and it sounds as though the top end of the engine is being starved of oil.
Today it passed its' MOT with flying colours, now instead of being able to hand it back to her to drive about in, I have my head under the bonnet!
Any ideas??

What's the service history? A mess like that usualy indicates a lack of servicing, oil changes and/or incorrect oil. Modern engines with the correct oil changed regularly don't usually suffer the sludge problems. It's also the reason the timing chain is failing.
You might get away with cleaning the rocker area mechanically as best you can whilst the engine is dismantled for the timimg chain followed by flushing oil followed by the correct oil (Vx's own synthetic). Change this after a relatively short distance as it will lift the gunge in the rest of the engine.

Hi
Can somebody point me in the direction of the website that allows me to see if my car is registered as being insured or not please? Thanks... Read more
Excellent - thanks!
Hi,
Just found out that the oil leak I've got is a blown head gasket. It's gone on the corner by the cambelt, injector side of engine: oil trickling down corner of engine near oil filter. I've had a phone around and it seems the job will take between 6 to 10 hours, resulting in cost of £650 to £1000. The problem being the difficulty of getting at the various bits and the head being warped and needing to be skimmed and the valves reground etc. Car has done 60,000 miles.
My question is, are these quotes reasonable? If they are, is it a DIY job?
Thanks

Hi Paul,
How did you get on the the DIY head gasket change?
I have an identical problem in that I have a stuck (bottom half) of a glow plug stuck in the cylinder head. There is also a hairline crack in the head by the plug- I doubt that it will cause any problems as is, but eventually I'd like to change the timing belt and as I've seen reconditioned cylinder heads for about £179 I'll change the whole head, gasket, belt and probably the pump.
I'm a novice but can get decent help from trained friends.
Did you run into any problems? or was it reasonable straight forward?
Cheers
For Astra G 1.6 16v 2001 petrol 119K should the engine management system circumvent 'flooding' when starting the engine. I found that it did not, I don't why the engine did not start immediately as normal, but once it flooded it would not start, not a even a cough.
In the end I removed the plugs dried and cleaned them and then, with a lot of coughing and spluttering is started and itd been fine since as it was previously.
Only thing was a very small movement on the previous day, engine ran for 2/3 minutes to shutdown, may have set a marginal fuel state??
is this procedure the only way to get over 'flooding' situation??

Not all systems have Clear Flood Mode. It is common on Multec single point on Vauxhall's, ie. those with an 'NZ' in the engine prefix. Flooding is a very common problem though as you say.......
My father ran a 16/60 in the early 70s. It had that design icon of the time the illuminated badge (which was backlit) - watching a TV programme about Frankie Howerd on the television the other night, one scene had "him" in the back of a Wolsely - the badge was most
definitely lit from the front (with a chromed bulbholder) - where they ever produced like this or was that a retrofit ? Read more
Some time in the very late fifties an old schoolmate from Plymouth, by then in the RAF doing National Service, visited Bath where I lived with my parents in his prewar Wolseley 14. Of course there were many such still around in those days. He kindly let me drive it, but not for long. I frightened him and myself, but fortunately did no harm to that nice person's car. I still remember his name actually, a real Devonian one.
