Went out to the car today and noticed a crack in the windscreen. Closer inspection shows a crack the starts under the plastic at the bottom of the screen and rises up 25 cm or so in an 'S' shape. No marks on the outside and the crack is on the inside. Rang the insurance and the RAC and they had not heard of this before. I'll have to get it changed next week. Bother. !! Sounds like a stress fracture in one lamination.

Sorry if this is an old subject. My CR-V is now three weeks old and fully run in according to the guide. It's a 2.2 diesel and at the start I was getting worried, because I was getting nothing like the 41mpg that most claimed was possible - 35-37 at best. My daily journey is five miles through town, forty miles on a motorway - 66mph according to the satnav - and then five miles through Bristol city centre, each way. I admit, I am not too bothered by the make of fuel I put in the car, going for the cheapest I see at present, as it ranges from 114-125 in the south west.

Last two times, though, Shell have been cheapest at 113, so that's where I have filled up and suddenly I'm averaging 40-41 at the end of each day. Is this because I am now through the 1500 miles mark, because I am using Shell rather than Morrisons or Tescos(amongst others) or is there another reason. If it is the Shell fuel, is there any other make that will give me even better fuel mileage? Read more

Ah, I made an error, I change at 2,300 to *drop back* to 2,000 after the change.

We arrived up here yesterday afternoon to stay a friend's house outside Llanberis. Skoda (coming up for a cheap service) and motorbike (for fun). I have to say this place is lovely, Snowdon (or Wyddfa - as SWMBO insists on calling it) is covered in snow, been out on the bike this morning to get milk, had a lovely ride across the Llanberis and Ffrancon (aka Ogwen) passes and I feel I must report remarkably traffic free roads. The A5 has been re-surfaced since I last ventured this way and the standard of the surfaces were superb. Very , very little traffic out and about. Stopped in Pete's Eats in Llanberis on the return leg and spent a pleasant 30 minutes there nursing a coffee (I actually did some moderating from there !). Not seen Welshlad's Mitsubishi yet, I could hardly miss him though could I ? ! Off for a couple of beers to Beddgelert later. Niiice. Read more

For some reason Volume 1 was invaded by the dreaded "quoting" virus. Hopefully you are now resistant to it !

From "The Daily Telegraph":

'Carbon dioxide emissions could be cut dramatically by changing traffic light sequences, says the AA.

...

Edmund King, of the AA, said: "Councils should be accountable for CO2 reduction, by upgrading gridlocked junctions, co-ordinating roadworks and reducing waiting times at traffic lights."'

We have had road pricing for non-petrol-propelled vehicles for 20 years now. It was set up initially to make the diesel-powered "heavies" pay for the road damage they caused. Buy distance in advance at the rate for the maximum all-up-weight of your vehicle. Because it was set up against the Heavies, the lowest weight is for a 2-ton truck, hence the dearth of diesel cars on our roads. It takes astronomical mileages to make diesel cars pay here. However, our technically-inpet pollies cannot understand that we would require less imported liquid fuel if they would make it worthwhile to buy diesel cars.

Our 320d has been running well since it had it's third (!) turbo 18 months ago, but it has two malfunctions of the dashboard display:

i. The fuel economy readout is always 7.1mpg - even though the moving needle display works correctly and the car actually returns about 51mpg.

ii. A outline of the car, together with a red lamp symbol appears on the dash sometimes even though all the bulbs are ok. Whilst driving these features cycle on and off for periods of several minutes for no obvious reason and with no apparent link to use of the lights or brakes etc.

I suspect there may be something simple like a poor connection that I could rectify myself if I knew where to look. Perhaps some damp in a connector?

Any help gratefully received, thanks in advance.

You've probably fixed it by now but as someone has suggested check the earth contact pins in the plug connectors. Mine were completely burnt through. Easy fix; extract earth wire from plug, cut off old spade terminal, put new wider one on and connect direct to the conveniently supplied connection point on the earth circuit on the circuit board. I then checked the other side lights and the same mod had already been done. No diplay warning lights coming on or erratic indicators since.

My son and I have just transplanted the complete 1800 diesel power unit from a Sierra into his P100 pick up, including the power steering. It all works fine except the steering which is now heavier than it was when manual, except on full lock. It all appears to be working, the belt is not slipping and the engine slows when you turn the wheel. The only thing I can think of is that the rack ratio is different, but surly there should be some improvment. Can anyone help?

Thanks. Peter.N. Read more

My Diesel Fabia gauge goes to overheat and the Temp warning goes ding and lights up. After a minute or so all is well and the gauge goes back to the centre, then it happens again but the engine doesn't appear to be boiling. I would have expected the cooling fans to come on but they don't. The fuse is ok. Where are the coolant temp sensor and the fan switch and how can I test them. I do not think that I have an engine problem as the gauge sinks back to normal too soon. Please can anyone help? Read more

Job done. Water pump plastic impeller spinning like a good'un while drive cog was still! Took a while but it was pretty easy, new tensioner was a bit fiddly as was getting out the lower half engine mount. Test drive showed the gauge rock steady on the line. Bits were £100 from GSF and Haynes manual £15.

Thanks for the steer 659 you were dead right. Pump has a plastic impeller from GSF.
