This morning's paper has a story about a man who'd held a licence for 11 years but never driven on a motorway or dual carriageway.
He got on to the M4 in the wrong direction and after five and a half miles hit another car head on killing the driver and seriously injuring the three passengers. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced to four and a half years in jail.
I'm not sure how anyone benefits from this. Any thoughts on a more appropriate way of dealing with it?
By coincidence Abu Izadeen (ne Trevor Brooks) was also sentenced to four and a half years in jail yesterday for crimes relating to terrorism carrying a maximum of a life sentence.
I can't help feeling there's somethng wrong somewhere. Read more

One of my key fobs has stopped working - changed the battery but still no change.
The spare fob works ok, but I wanted to keep two available.
Any ideas what I can try next? or any other checks?
Could it be the electronics in the key fob or the electronics in the car itself?
I understand that a new key fob is v expensive & I'm reluctant to hand it over to my local dealership.
Thanks Read more
You could try re-synchronising the key.Put working key in steering lock and ignition on.Close all doors, put non working key in drivers door lock and rotate to full lock position and hold it there ,then press one of the buttons on the remote fob.hth
In a London Taxi, same lump as early Galaxys & some Mondeos I think:
seems to have better acceleration with the turbo pressure hose unplugged off the EGR presumably so that the valve is always shut, but what would this do to invisible emmissions & the cat if its got one?
a colleague's cab went off the scale on the smoke test & was advised by a nearby taxi garage to stick a jetwash hose up the tailpipe & the ensuing startup would remove soot from silencer: smoke reading subsequently almost ZERO so is all the black smoke just soot not emissions nor EGR-design-fault-related smoke as he does not 'sabotage' his EGR?
Finally, anyone had one of those black boxes installed with a knob to alter timing, turbo etc and is it any good for power, smoothnes, not to mention smoke & economy?

I have some semi synth gear oil 75w90w spec gl5, is this suitable for the micra?
Thanks in advance.
Double entry of make/model & year/engine info in subject header deleted as the compulsory fill in boxes puts those details in the header for you Read more
The correct oil for the Micra is: SAE 80 to API GL4.
£36000 for 112PS, 0-62 in 9.5 seconds and top speed limited to 106mph.
43.5mpg and CO2 rating of 129g/km.
My question is why ? If you took it in to central London it would cost you after October as the exhaust emissions are not low enough to qualify for exemption from CC.
I just can't get my head around why someone would pay so much for so little.
A standard Smart Brabus is about half what this costs. Read more
I'm sure some taxi drivers around my home would have found him a fix for that.
because you failed to spot the low bridge.

What about the arch shaped bridges where a double-decker has to pull into the middle of the road to go under the highest part of the arch, but single-deckers can stay on their own side of the road.
I know of one such bridge and both double- and single-deckers are used on the same bus route. Drivers only pull to the middle of the road if they're in a double-decker. As far as I can recall there has never been a bus accident at this bridge but it's obviously a potential hazard.

The radio reception of my Focus is awful. What can be the likely cause? It's not the signal, as my Focus II I've traded down from had excellent reception. Will it be the unit, the aerial or something more complex?
Thanks :) Read more
Has it got the standard radio or a aftermarket unit ,I believe ford use an in line 12v supplied aerial amplifier hidden away somewhere normaly ford radios are pretty good . In cases such as Pug/Cit you have to fit an amp for the aftermarket unit to work properly as the amp is fitted in the radio.
Sometimes, when I'm overtaken by someone who appears to have everything in life he needs except a brain, I suggest to Mrs O that the person who's just gone by is regarding the other cars as obstacles in an arcade game: simply there to swerve around as he disappears towards a record-breaking score.
Not, I think, what the welsh bloke was up to but an interesting thought for our younger readers.
