Has anyone got any information on whether there is going to be a new audi A4 diesel 118bhp? I know they are doing a petrol version 120PS but I read in Whatcar Magazine that the lower powered diesel version was coming out later on in the year. I've contacted Audi and all they say is they are waiting for confirmation from the factory.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help with my problem. I have had my Kai Pride from new (1999) and she has always run immaculately until the last couple of months. I have replaced the battery and then had the timing belt replaced and since then I have had problems. The trouble is that the car will seem to be driving perfectly ok and then suddenly loses power, to such an extent that I have to pull over on the road and stop. I go down the gears but the engine just continues to lose power until I have to pull over. However, it seems that once I switch the ignition off for a very short while and then re-start the car will then run ok again. I have had it into the local garage and they have changed the plugs, checked the distributor etc but, as the fault is so intermitent, they have been unable to solve the problem. I really don't want to lose my little car but, unless we can identity the problem and get it fixed, I simply can't use it for work as I am nervous that it will let me down. Any help would be so gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

hi all, i would just like to get some opinions on a crash i had last night.
I was driving my girlfriends car... a car she has only had for 2 weeks we are both fully comp on her policy. i have a seperate policy on my car. we pulled up to a 4 junction mini roundabout and i looked right and slowed down to about 5/10mph. it was clear so i proceded over the roundabout as i got 3/4 of the way over a car came plowing down from the left didnt give way to her right and went into the passenger side of my gf's car.
a witness initially said i wasnt to blame and it was the other womans fault for not giving way to the right. but when her big 'fella' came out of the pub next door and spoke to him he decided he had changed his mind and didnt see the accident. the police didnt turn up for 30 mins. i asked if her kids were ok ( she had about 4 children in the car which immediatlely were shepperded off to the pub ). she admitted fault but when the police took statement she said i had admitted fault and that i was speeding?!? police said it was insurance job and i couldnt believe what i was hearing. police gave me a full name, address, ins and personal check and didnt even run her through the computer.
we are both 20 and have been driving carefully for 2 and 3 years respectively and i feel we may lose our no claims over this. i dont think it is fair that because i am a young driver people assume i was speeding.
she was driving a brand new scenic which was a mobility car.
hope i have explained it properly. Read more
Part of the standard driver's pack issues with our company vehicle is a disposable flash camera - very useful for situations like this, although photos from your mobile could be downloaded to your insurers too!
Always, if possible, take photos immediately, or as soon as possible, after a collision - especially if you think you were in the right! Very useful to back up your evidence.
I am fed up with the wing mounted electric telescopic aerial I've got on my 1994 G-wagon. The motor has failed again due to the telescopic bit getting bunged up with crud. This is the 3rd time I have needed a new aerial in 11 years.
So I am looking for a better design, either
[Type 1] a fixed full length bendy fiberglass-type one which I can unscrew for the monthly wash or, even better,
[Type 2] an internal glass mounted one e.g. Blaupunkt Autofun
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Do they provide a good signal?
I have been looking through the Blaupunkt catalogue and I have found a [type 1]Autoflex: a "Helical whip with alternating wiring direction for good FM reception". This is labelled as "12V active". The circuit diagram indicates that it simply requires a 12V feed which is fine as the current electric one receives 12V whenever the head unit is switched on. Would this aerial be compatible with my old head unit?
The [type 2] Autofun has an AP 1 DIN plug. Does this need an adaptor to connect to my head unit which has an old fashioned antenna socket?
The radio head unit is the original factory Mercedes Benz 'Special' Becker AM/ FM radio/ cassette which is fairly descent set. The car is a W463. I am in Estonia so cannot just pop down to Halfords unfortunately. Read more
Years ago I had a 1993 Ford Maverick and the electric aerial eventually failed due to a build up of dirt, despite regular cleaning and lubrication.
I fitted an internal screen-mounted aerial with an integral signal amplifier but it was never very satisfactory and I often lost the radio signal.
I suspect that a replacement external aerial will perform better.
As regards the other electronic queries, can't help you there.
SWMBO has a generally excellect EOS with DSG that I worry about for two reasons.
1. Will the roof keep working .............. but that's not what I'm posting about. :-)
2. In stationary traffic I need to keep my foot on the brake to prevent creeping. I'm aware that the clutch is a "wet" one that works in the gearbox oil, so is the creep caused by the drag of the oil film between the plates, or have VW arranged for it to be biting a bit to simulate creep on a torque convertor auto?
I'm worried enough that I slip into neutral if the car will be stationary for a fair period, perhaps more than a minute.
Am I worrying over nothing or does this cause premature clutch wear?
The handbook says little, apart from if the clutch gets too hot, the car will "rock along its length" surely by then any damage would have been done ?
Any thoughts people ?

I have a DSG Audi and in standing traffic it's 'N' and handbrake for me. No problems to date. The creep is caused by the clutch engaging - no different to releasing the clutch on a manual and using tickover to creep forward.
From what I have read the clutch will only get too hot if you use it to hold on a hill or you do flying starts for an extended period. If this situation occurs the car will shutdown the protect the clutch.
Hi
Vauxhall Corsa GLS 1.7Di
The above vehicle was purchased new by the army in 2001. When it was re-registered last year, it received a 51 plate (i.e. September 2001), yet has got the old pre-March 2001 tax band. In other words I'm likely to pay £185 per year instead of next year's £90!
What can be done? Obviously the DVLA know it's post March 2001, otherwise it would have had a Y plate not 51. So do they need anything to convince them it's worthy of the lower tax band.
I don't know what happens with the history when it leaves the army. It comes with a service print-out but that's it! Read more
To close.
Eventually, after a letter from Vauxhall giving CO 2 and then having to go back and be lightened of £70 for a ECoC (thanks to girl at DVLA who obviously knew nothing after being asked specifically whether I'd need the ECoC, twice!) the tax is now banded at the correct level.
Servicing, welshlad, was from various garages (mainly dealers) through the lease company.
Has anyone experience of renting cars in eastern Europe and renting in one country, driving to maybe a few others and dropping off in another one?
Am thinking of starting in Poland perhaps Katowice then visiting Czech Republic, Slovakia and perhaps dropping car off finally in Budapest, Hungary in July 08.
Have been given a quote of a Euro 100 drop off fee with holiday autos on top of normal hire charges. Are there any cos that charge nothing for this?
Any other tips on what is needed paperwork wise to do this? Anyone have any problems with a car rental broker arranging this sort of non-standard use and finding the local rental agent won't accept the deal?

Thanks for the advice. Will get everything if possible written into the quotation plus will check specifically on the breakdown cover.
Any tips on driving in Poland/Eastern Europe?
My problem is I can't lock the car at all. This is a 5 door model, and is key operated.
When the key is turned on the drivers door, only the motor on the drivers door operates.
When the key is turned on the passenger door, all the motors operate except the motor on the drivers door. Either way the car stays unlocked. I suspect the fault may be on the drivers door? I think the system is locking and then unlocking again due to a fault?
I have had the panel off the drivers door only:
There is a switch assembly round the lock barrel which I have tested. Also there is a switch on the bottom of the motor assembly which I have tested. As the motor assembly is integral with the door catch, I have had to fit it back on the car for now.
Recently, we had a flat battery due to a broken cable on the alternator. I noticed that I was unable to lock the car manually without 12v power. Is this correct? I assumed that I would be able to lock the front doors with the key without power.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just had a look at the car, and crud all over the socket - what a crazy place for a connector!
Given it a good clean and a spray with WD but no joy. Left it unplugged for now - at least the car can now be locked manually on the drivers side. The central locking now works ok on the rest of the car, so the problem is definitely on that door. Will look at it when I have more time.
Thanks for the help, Screwloose.
By the way, my first time on this forum. I read your comment on Haynes which caused some trouble. People can be a bit sensitive sometimes! Haynes is good advice though. Most of the essential data is there, and if you are a beginner there are lots of tips. After all, if you can't spot an oil filter, you won't know to clean the seating, lubricate the seal, not to over tighten etc , and Haynes will tell you this.
Hi,
I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a bicycle carrier for the summer... but I have a new Grand C4 Picasso and not having played with bicycle carriers before I wondered if anyone has any advice... do's/don'ts etc...?
Specifically does anyone have the same car with a carrier?
Cheers,
Gary.

Hi,
I was thinking tailgate.
I don't have a towbar, and with the roof mounted ones it would be really difficult for me to get the bikes on/off - I'm not too tall you see, I have to stand on a stepladder to wash the roof as it is :)
Thanks.
Hi, have finally found a Beetle for my wife, a diesel one that has 40k miles and is 4 1/2 years old.
Now this is being bought from a used car dealer. I have done all the usual checks including speaking to previous owner etc so happy all that side is covered.
However, the car has not had its timing belt changed. as some of you may remember this was the subject to a long thread, prompted by HJ himself as VAG had changed the frequency to 60k / 4 years for changes.
I got a quote from an indie for £300 but dealer is not prepared to pay for this or have it done. Fair enough, I can get it done. However, what is the legal side of this? I have told the dealer that the timing belt has not been done like it should have and he is prepared to still sell me this (yes I know I also am prepared to buy it).
I believe there is legal rulings that if a car develops a fault within, is it 6 months, then it is perceived to have been there at time of sale and so onus on seller to fix? Car comes with a 3 month warranty which, I assume would have a caveat that car must have been seviced to manufacturer guidelines.
Two points, has anyone got a direct link to a site that states categorically that the above is now the frequency for changes. Secondly what are the legalities surrounding this situation?
I am trying to use it as a bit of leverage although, being honest, the price its advertised at just now is a price I am willing to pay. Thoughts? Read more
Going back to the cambelt change - I had a 1.9TDi 100bhp and it is indeed 60k/4 years, whichever is sooner!

Car Magazine reckon that there's a 120bhp diesel on the way.
