April 2008
Saw the new Mazda 6 close up for the first time today. It was a sport model in copper red and I thought it looked great. So much more original than the mundane Mondeo. I could well be tempted when the time comes for a replacement of the faithful Pug (I had a 2.0d 5 series as a definite, but I really like this).

Hi
The air conditioing on My kia Sedon has stopped working. Is there anything practical i can do to check the problem before heading to a garage. I have checked the fuses and they are okay.

You're not the only one.
I've just bought a second car that I'll be driving purely at my pizza delivery job. When I'm working the work insurance covers me so I only need TPFT non-business insurance. What's your experience about getting the second car insured? Would I expect some discount from my current car insurer or should I look at getting a new cover? Read more
i run two cars both covered by the same company, it's easy business for them and so far they've worked out cheaper than isuring with two separate companies.
is it fairly straight forward to do an oil change? i have a (2000) w reg 1.8 tdi and i am trying to save some pennies. any advice welcome, or shall i just take it to the garage! cheers Read more
The undertray is indeed the hardest bit. I bought a vacuum oil extractor for about 30 quid and was very impressed. It worked a treat on my Audi A4 after I couldn't get the sump nut undone. Some people say you can't get all the oil out, so when it stopped sucking I chucked in a pint or 2 of some other spare oil I had lying around and then sucked that out, thus diluting any residue. However it will not work on some engines because the dipstick passage is too narrow. Also, check that you can get to the filter from above if you intend to use an extractor, otherwise you will need to remove the tray anyway.

Some appalling driving here. Interestingly the two near disasters are caused by the speeding drivers noticing the camera van and panic braking. Perhaps this is a valid argument for actually concealing cameras

I've been quoted £185 by an independant garage to supply and fit a new water pump to my Isuzu engined cavalier.
As the local motorfactors can sell me a new water pump for £23, I've decided to do the job myself. It seems an easy job in the Haynes manual and my question is am I missing something that warrants the hefty quote by the garage? I would think it should take me a couple of hours.
Thanks for any advice. Read more
no you are not missing anything, fairly straight forward, just make sure that you have the correct waterpump as if my memory serves me right there are three variations of pump, take your time, be methodical, take pictures if you have to so you can refer back to them if ness, loosen pulley bolts before removing the belt and tighten the pully bolts when the belt is on
Hi Iv have just fitted a new head gasket to my M reg astra 1.6 16v ecotech petrol engine. It is now revving high on tick over. It starts at about 1 1/2 rpm and rises upto 2 1/2 or 3rpm on tick over. Also orange engine warning light now comes on. Changed the idle on it but still have the problem. Anyone out there who can please
cheers

I'm thinking of spending up to £1000 on a diesel car to use only for going to work and back but not sure what car to buy .
it has to be a diesel ( non turbo ) and i was thinking of a xsara or 306 , any good points / bad points would be helpful

I'd certainly recommend a 306 1.9TD. Plenty around now for less than £1000 and provided they have service history, indicating that the oil, coolant and cambelt have all been changed at the recommended intervals then you shouldn't go too far wrong. A word of warning though- avoid Phase 2 306TD's with a DHY coded engine registered between April 1997 and April 1998, a number of which which were supposedly fitted with the 'wrong' conrods and resulted in a spate of wrecked engines.
Performance and economy wise, the non-turbo 1.9D gives only slightly better economy than the TD, but performance is rather leisurely with long hill climbs and overtaking a bit of a challenge. The TD gives similar performance to the 1.6 petrol and as such is much nicer to drive whilst still averaging 40-45mpg. It is true to say however that the fuel economy on the TD does suffer if booted around town or if driven on the motorway at over 80mph. Stick to 70-75 and 45-47mpg is achievable. I normally get between around 550 miles from a full tank doing mainly long, steady runs
In summary, you could do a lot worse than a 306 1.9TD. Mine is still going strong at nearly 14 years old and 221k on the clock and pretty much flew through the last MOT with only a tyre requiring replacement.

In case anyone has filled up at any Edinburgh Petrol Stations recently, it would appear that credit card fraud has been discovered at a couple of sites.
Might be worth checking your accounts where appropriate. Read more
Debit Card / Credit Card it makes no difference ->>
Well - I go on the rationale that if I use a debit card and someone empties my account I've got to get the money back from the bank!
If I use a CC and someone applies a fraudulent charge to my account - If I don't agree with what's on the statement - I don't pay, I'm in control.
For that reason I never buy anything over the 'net with a DC - always a CC, and I keep a separate card for that purpose so that if anything goes wrong (financial) life carries on as normal & I - and more importantly perhaps my wife! - can continue spending on DC and the main CC whilst it's resolved.
Brings to mind the old chesnut about the man having his credit card stolen but didn't report it because the thief was spending less than his wife.

The petrol engined Mazdas are extremely reliable, but the diesel engines are sourced from Ford, which accounts for the reliability problems with the last model 6.
I am not wholly sure if the latest model is still powered by Ford`s diesel or whether Mazda have developed their own engines. Perhaps someone could confirm either way.
