Hello,
I recently posted about choosing between petrol and diesel. I was also looking at coupes such as the Merceceds E 350 and the BMW 330 and was also looking at spending £10-£11k on a used version. ... Read more
I was going to Email HJ and ask him to comment on Skidpan's post, but it's been so admirably answered by Manatee and Andy that I don't need to.
I won't censor Skidpan's post as it tells us more about him than about HJ....
Hi,
Wondering if there is some opinion on my current car predicament. ... Read more
Surely the mileage justifies going diesel. My understanding of the issues are down to incomplete re-gens of the DPF (due to short, stop start journeys) knackering it. Presumably at 20k per year you must be spending a lot of time pounding along motorways and such so this shouldn't be an issue?.
As for performance, as the Passat bi-turbo diesel (6.3s 0-60, 147mph) would keep up with a Sierra Cosworth, how much performance do you need or think you can realistically use?. Also, a point worth noting is that the Passat also has more torque (369 lb/ft) than the n/a V8 RS4 (317 lb/ft)....
A lot of what's been said was true when the Up was launched in terms of moving the game on in the city car class but after trying the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto to compare with the Up myself, both those cars are superior to the Up / Citigo / Mii in almost every respect.
The way they handle / ride, their performance, the space they provide, price (with easy to negotiate discounts), running costs including much longer warranties and servicing packages, all put them ahead of the Up type cars. I even think they look better and feel like higher quality products (i.e. no bare metal on display on the interiors of the doors for example).
I'm also still a bit puzzled why no motoring websites or publications have ever tested the Kia Picanto GT-Line with the new 1.0 T-GDi turbo engine, especially when the Up GTi seems to get a new road test / comparison every other week! Read more
I've always felt that if the manufacturers are going to use a GTI badge, they should do it all properly. Big wide boots, belled out arches, low enough to scrape speed humps and a sound to raise the hairs on the back of your neck!Thats my wifes i10 automatic, streets better tha a VW Up !!!!
NFU Mutual - we had two cars insured with mainstream insurers and twice, after using comparison sites when their insurance was due, rang our local NFU Mutual branch who were much cheaper. They have lots of local offices and traditional personal service. Possibly because they are a mutual, a bit like a building society, rather than a profit making corporation. What's not to like? They're perfectly good, honest, value for money cars: exactly what made Skoda's attractive before they went mock premium. Also like Skoda of old, they don't sell many so they have a small dealership of garages that want to sell them and give good personal service; rather than chase the next finance package sale.
They're solid and reliable; which is key for anyone buying their car with their own money. They're not the fastest; most economical; or latest technology - but what is fitted works and works for a long time.
I've been very impressed with my Tivoli.
Happy to drive 450 miles in a day and not get out feeling stiff and tired. Economy is surprisingly close to what is advertised: I've averaged around 48mpg mixed driving over the last 5000 miles of motorway, back lanes and stop start city commuting: not bad for a 1.6 normally aspirated petrol engine.

I'm quite interested in your comments Captain.
I run Michelin CrossClimates on my Rover 75 (not an old mans car, I'm 26!) and the manufacturer recommended pressures are 32psi front and 30psi rear....
"More died from Flu in WW1 trenches than from bullets" - the purpose of trenches was to protect soldiers from bullets so very few should have died from that cause. WW1 is plagued with myths - www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25776836 Read more
That's too literal a reading of the statement. "trenches" means battlefields, and is a figure of speech - metonymy. "The WW1 trenches" has been the common phrase to refer to the First World War for the best part of a century.
Another daft idea from MPs living in La-La Land. It took this country 50 years to develop an adequate network of petrol service stations, so how do these MPs plan to do the same for electricity charge points in 14 years? The first thing they should be thinking about is how to provide sufficient reliable power to charge the 30,000,000 electric cars needed to replace the petrol and diesel ones - wind power isn't going to do it by itself. Also, the sheer expense of buying electric cars with adequate range for ordinary motorists' needs is a no-no for most people.

Is this from the same group of MPs that were telling everyone that diesel was the way forward just shows how much they know.
Hi all.
I have a problem with a Citroen relay 2.2. The one with the transit engine.
Month or so ago the egr cooler failed and it flooded the engine. Garage it was recovered to initially though got it was head gasket but after removing head they discovered that wasn’t the case. Further investigation which involved removing engine completely resulted in finding the egr cooler had split. Engine was put back together after having head skimmed, valves re ground, block x-ray and pistons honed only to discover that the turbo was not spooling up on the test drive. No warning lights, no fault codes but the oddest thing is that when on the ramp, the turbo does spool, so in other words, it’s not working under load.
Garage have now held their hands up and admitted defeat. They claim to have checked everything but can find no reason for the fault. Oh also, the turbo was sent off to a specialist to be rebuilt and is guaranteed to be 100%.
Any ideas what the hell could be causing this? I’m at the end of my teather with it. It’s cost me a fortune so far and i dont seem to be any closer to getting it back.
Any ideas at all will be most helpful.
Thanks.

Turbo itself has been rebuilt and guaranteed by the company that did it. I’m concerned that it has been fitted incorrectly.
I’ve got it back now as I’m not convinced the garage will find the fault. It starts and idles perfectly and revs up while stationary. In fact, when you drive it it seems ok in 1st but as you speed up it’s obvious something is not right. It’s like it’s in limp mode but with no warning lamps. It smokes a bit too. Not clouds of it but it’s noticeable.
Im going no yo have yo check all the pipes and connections myself but I’m not sure that I’ll find anything as I don’t realky know what I’m looking for unless it’s something very obvious.

I agree that we need a general approach and not just limited to one or two sectors of the polluters, but I do think we need a healthy does of realism/pragmatism as well as optimism about all this - as regards aeroplanes and ships, both these are heavy polluters, but if we unilaterally 'cracked down' on them, it would put the UK at a serious economic disadvantage compared to other nations, especially when many of them boast about many of their 'green credentials' but in such areas do absolutely nothing, or in the case of the Germans, major car manufacturers cheat the system on a global scale.
We need to achieve as many 'easy wins' first of the bat, then decide how best to tackle the more tricky areas, that will likely require serious amounts of international co-operation, especially from the US, China, India and from other devloping nations who are least able to afford to replace fleets of planes, ships, power stations, etc or changover in a short time to renewables without richer nations paying for it or strongarming nations without it leading to trade wars or worse....
