Today's Times reports that the Waze app (whatever that does) now has a function called 'GTI Superdrives' which can warn drivers when they are approaching one of a list of 75 specially selected routes - presumably to tempt them to add to the traffic there. Do we need that?

Apparently the research was done by VW, to include 'scenery and points of interest'. Top of the list is the Cheddar Gorge, followed by two Scottish roads, the A939/940 and the A701. The list also includes the Brecon Beacons, Glencoe and even the Hardknott Pass. Anyone familiar with that one must hope that this app does not add to the traffic there.... Read more

Waze can't be used on a PC to pre-plan a route, unlike Google maps

Actually you can use it on your phone to set up a planned drive. You tell it when you need to be there and it will tell you when you need to be leaving. Simple idea but great. It even beeps you when the time to go is near. And I concur its eta function is very accurate. I use It a lot and thoroughly recommend it to the panel....

Recently caught some dangerous driving on a HD dashcam of a HGV nearly causing a serious accident, very clear footage registration number and full capture of the incident from start to finish and the Police have done nothing. After reporting and filling in a detailed report form online there was a text message sent to say 'we do not currently have the ability to accept and review dashcam footage' and that it was case closed!

About to escalate to a formal complaint with the force involved and in my mind this is more the behaviour you would expect in a lawless corrupt third-world country in which there is minimal enforcement. Perhaps I am just expecting too much..... Read more

Its seems that REAL police officers agree with most of us on the trivialisation of much of what the Police now do, and seemingly will do to an even greater extent:

I'm thinking of buying a used KIA sportage (3 years old) for a non KIA dealership.

Can anyone tell me what the score is with the warranty when buying used: e.g. is there any documentation that is transferred, how do I know that the warranty isn't void from any work undertaken, does the dealer need to provide a warranty if the manufacturer warranty is still in place? ... Given normally that KIA/Hyundai are near or at the top of the tree as regards their warranties, you'd think that they woul have a national database for servicing and repair work.

What I'd be very wary of is how non-franchised garages can prove that they've always used manufacturer's parts or (as allowed) parts of equal quality/performance (as I believe the EU rules state) in order to stay within the bounds of the warranty, as long as the vehicle keeps to its service schedule or better....

Hello all - 1st time poster here.

I'm looking for a replacement for my petrol Golf Plus. Production was stopped around about 2011 so I'm unable to get a newer version and the SVs are out of my pocket unfortunately.... Read more

Good idea. Going in as a cash buyer with no part exchange will make the dealer more accommodating as well.

Wow - HJ now doing time-travelling (see the name of this article) - who'd thunk?! ;-)

PS. You might want to change the links, both for this page (to 13/10/18 or whatever, to match page 1) AND the link to page 1 at the top, which gives page 2's name, though the hyperlink itself is the correct one. Read more

Re: "Sootable case for treatment" :

When my EGR valve sticks 'near-open', the (diesel) engine stutters and feels strangled until I can boot it to above 2000-2500 rpm.

When my EGR valve sticks 'closed', the engine pulls strongly and smoothly on even a light accelerator pedal from about 1300 rpm and feels great. But loads of soot/smoke is blown out of the exhaust during even moderate acceleration.

But the 'spanner light' is lit in either case.

SH - take a look at Cox Motor Parts website, they have a selection of genuine Honda new (ex display / demo) CRV wheel & tyre packages at very reasonable prices - look in the clearance section. I bought some 17" wheels as a a set for winter recently from them. Read more

Maybe greedy manufacturers should consider lowering their prices rather than exploiting public money to encourage increased sales (whilst using "saving the environment" as an excuse, like politicians usually do, to be fair).

It's a bit like the fuel duty dilemma. If you decrease fuel duty, the greedy oil companies will increase their profits and thus absorb that money within increased prices instead, so you're left with the sad choice of paying too much for fuel to either go into the treasury or into the deep pockets of oil companies. We have a chicken and egg situation here.

Only the economies of scale will bring the prices down, but while the prices remain high many people are unable or unwilling to buy.
