I previously owned a Ford focus 1.6 tdci. The dpf was at most 40cm away from the cylinders and still had eolys. That car was a mess. In less than 6 months I changed 7 turbos at wich point I said "let it be an SDI".

JD obviously didn't visit the Subaru dealer websites. No problem there finding a car with an opening sunroof. Read more

Makes Ford's 1 year full warranty+ 2yrs insurance cover warranty(foc) look even worse value - maybe Ford have less faith in their products! Read more

Surprising that things like suspension bushes are included when a lot of other manufacturers would class them as wear and tear items. Surprising, but good.

Sounds like SsangYong are trying to appeal to budget-conscious buyers as Kia and Hyundai did back in the day. Hopefully it'll work out for them.

AR from West Sussex writes "I can't think of any other aspect of life where most of us find ourselves so totally dependent on the advice of strangers as car maintenance... What is a cambelt?"

Are "most of us" really that ignorant? I think not. And for those who are, the remedy is in their own hands. It really isn't that hard to learn some of the most elementary things about cars. And if you don't want to do so, you know who to blame if you incur unexpected costs. Why should anyone else be responsible for remedying your complete lack of knowledge and your apparent unwillingness to rectify it? Read more

Hj comments that cars with engines 2 litres and above usually have dsg,s which are stronger and. Give less problems. Perhaps you had those. Also wrong oil was specified for some plus regular oil changes are beneficial. I also saw a recommendation on an American site that you should never creep forward in traffic in these as it is like slipping the clutch in a manual which is damaging. Let a clear space open up first. Same for cvt transmission I believe.

This reminds me of a story my driving instructor told me one Saturday when he had a pupil attempt to drive through the flashing lights at an unbarriered level crossing. The pupil associated it with pelican crossings where you can proceed on a flashing amber if it is safe. Read more

I couldn't help but notice that the driver who went through the red light had an Audi.

REALLY..! ..? £65K and you have to dampen a ‘rattle’ from a sliding table with a sock? I’d use the sock with a billiard ball in it , visit the VW dealership it came from (or wotever source) and suggest it gets sorted pronto - no way I’d put up with that .... £65K is a lot of ‘get it sorted NOW’ Either Ron is cashed up so much so, that it doesn’t bother him , or, he’s too nice to make a fuss. I’m neither, so would definitely be using the sock too.....just in a different manner, to rid the rattling din! Having read that though, if I had the spare change to buy one of these type motors, I’d opt for the Merc V class. Great video though guys!

Hi

I have a friend who is reaching that age and wants to buy something sporty and special for himself whilst the family still have an SUV for kids/wife/shopping etc. Obviously having frequented this forum for many years I instantly suggested the MX5 (his budget is around £21K) and he test drove a 1.5 RF today and of course loved it. Unfortunately he quickly realised that he will have to use it over the winter (rural Scotland) for work commuting and that the MX5 is not really suited for that role. I then suggested an Audi TT, 21K gets him into the mk3, and recommended the 2.0 TFSi or even the 1.8 petrol which seems plenty quick enough. Obviously a quattro would be great but I suspect that even a 2wd with decent tyres would handle most conditions perfectly well (his work has a policy where you can work from home or the nearest base in bad weather conditions).... "The biggest danger was of it falling through the floor of his then 1970's era BMC 1300's."

Interesting - would that be the boot of a RWD Marina or the front passenger footwell of a FWD Austin 1300 or Allegro?...

I had to laugh today (more of an indignant snort at my taxes being wasted once again) when I read that a second batch of police cars in the area where I live have brought howls of protest from angry police officers who can't actually fit inside them!
Both the local police's B-class Mercedes and the regional police's Seat Leóns (estate cars in both cases, for some obscure reason!) have left several taller-than-average patrol cops with stiff joints and muscles and risks of very serious long term harm, as the perspex security screens leave hardly any legroom or fore-and-aft movement when a fully tooled-up cop is in the front (think belt, handcuffs, radio, pistol and more than a few pre-retirement doughnut-bellies.) The police unions are calling for all 200 cars to be sent back.
So which cars these days offer the greatest amount of legroom and fore and aft movement - so much so that a plastic screen could be accommodated easily? It's a bit late now but I might pass on suggestions to the fleet managers for the next time. Read more

Skoda Superb has an amazing amount of legroom front and rear and has large front doors. All of which I need being 6ft 4" and I have a 6ft 5" son.

Perspex screen - I'd say so....

I purchased a car from a dealer on the 19th September.

As part of the purchase the car trader was to MOT the car and provide a 12mth ticket which he rang to inform me had been done on the 18th September and in his words it 'sailed' through. ... Read more

Is it possible that the MOT was done first and then the service? They could have taken the wheels off at the service and put them on the wrong sides. Stupid and careless.

That's the way the DVSA say it has to be done. They wish to monitor the exact condition of vehicles which are being brought into testing stations to be tested.
