I had a bolt in my tyre quite close to the sidewall. Took it to Kwik Fit who said they couldn’t repair it because it was too close to the sidewall but quoted a massive amount on a new tyre.
So I took it to an independent garage and he just fixed it. He couldn’t speak much English so it was difficult to tell but he said it was fixed and fine.
I’m a bit concerned it’ll go again and make it worse or affect the alloys - can someone give me some advice please?
Thanks Read more
Can anyone tell me whether or not it is possible to have a punctured tyre repaired as any other tyre if you do not use the sealant and inflator that comes supplied with the vehicle? Ias k because if so l will then buy a spacesaver spare wheel. Read more
I have heard anecdotal evidence on a bike forum where someone rode over a broken bottle and the tyre sealant slowed the escape of air long enough for the rider to slow down and stop safely. Some of the sealants have fine black rubber threads in them to aid bridging a large puncture.
My Volkswagen Golf, 2003 automatic model has problems changing from 3rd to 4th gear.
For the first 5 minutes of the journey gear changing is fine, changing into 4th with no problems. But after around 5 minutes of driving the car will go from 3rd to 4th and straight back down to 3rd. It then stays in 3rd and won't go back into 4th even when going at high speeds or anything above 40. The revs are obviously very high because of this and is using alot of petrol.... Read more
Yes its a 4 speed auto, engine size 1.6 .
She can be a little slow to change into first and sometimes revs high to change into 3rd.
Saw this stuff in Halfords,"Classic" 20W50 API SE/CC in a nice tin.
Now I like old thick oil, and I don't discount the alleged downside of newer specs with lower zinc levels. (I use SJ routinely in my 1986 car and would use SG or SH if I had it).... Read more
I can see why higher viscosity is better in older engines (and perhaps in newer engines if you want to maximise engine life)
I can also see why newer spec oils with reduced zinc levels might not be good for older engines....
It's a shame most of the Prius drivers I see on the road are somewhat lacking in driving skills. Read more
You're not suggesting they are worse than Audi, BMW & Mercedes drivers are you??
Every Prius driver I have observed have been faultless!
This list is titled LARGE SUV's, yet in some of these sardines would be uncomfortable. If you use the words big, then select the big vehicles. Read more
Heading back to Taiwan in a week so last-minute shopping time.
I havn't found it possible to find recognisable brands of grease in Taiwan, and I'd bet money the distinction between standard lithium bearing grease and moly grease for CV joints is not known or of any interest there, so I thought I'd take a tub or two back.... Read more
Yeah I recall them advertised in "practical motorist"
Seem to recall they worked on a kind of woodpeker system,...
It does (unsurprisingly) bear a resemeblence to the God-awful looking Lexus CT 200h, especially from the rear. Let's hope that the new 'better handling' actually is far better than the Lexus, as the current car isn't as good on that score as 10+ year old cars like my Mazda3. Toyotas may be uber-reliable, but other than the GT86 they aren't great drivers' cars.
They need to at least match the Hyundai i30/KIA Ceed to start regaining market share that they lost with the Auris. The 'old' Corolla at least didn't pretent to be anything other than reliable transport for the elderly. If its too expensive, then thos two makes will keep making gains at Toyota's expense. Honda seem to have responded. Can Toyota? Hmmm. Read more
I have never liked the appearance of the Auris, and having owned two Toyotas, a petrol Carina and now an automatic petrol Avensis Tourer, both of which have been conservative but very practical, have considered deserting Toyota for our next car.
In both Israel and Eire, I have seen a Corolla which Toyota have chosen not to market in the UK, and been struck by how much the body shape appealed to me. But they chose to market the lacklustre Auris in the UK.
I hope therefore that they are seeing the light, unless they go stupid with the new design as they have with the C-HR.
This also applies to Fiesta ST (amongst other models) of the same vintage with 1.6 ecoboost.
Recall letters have been sent out (I received mine yesterday). Read more
I am having a problem with my 2012 focus where it’s lost power white smoke coming from exhaust and eating coolant. Cracked coolant pipe and engine smells like it’s getting hot but doesn’t seem to be over heating. I have taken to a small garage and they think it’s a coolant issue because of the degas pipe but apparently I have to take to Ford to have that diagnosis and if it is then they will give me a new engine but if it’s not then im stuck with a completely useless and unreliable car as will need a new engine. Not happy it’s only done 58000
Stupidly purchased a car on Friday without looking at MOT from an independent garage .MOT was done in July 2018 but has a list of advisories including front tire close to legal limit and brake pads needs changing.Had I checked this I would of been hesitant to purchase or negotiated on price.
Do I now get my own service done ? Or is there an type of inspection I should get done ?... Read more
Have a look at both and make your own judgement.
If it turns out you can't lever any goodwill from the seller, brake pads arent usually difficult to replace....
Serious tyre damage should be left to tyre repair professionals, and your local tyre fitter is not qualified nor have the equipment nor expertise to tackle a major repair, minor tread punctures by nails are not major damage, but a bolt can be much worse, the problem is you have no idea what damage is done inside the casing by the item protruding inside.
There are very few tyre repair professionals about, there's a couple of places still going in Northants (this area specialised decades ago and as its a specialised small industry the long learned skills have stayed fairly local), and one in Ely that i'm aware of, there may be others but you'll have to find them for yourself....
