On another thread i said an old friend, (actually 88 years young) had his rover 25 1.4 give up last week.

Friday we went to a local dealer with a fair reputaion, Old Bill, his son and myself.... Read more

Tell us who the dealer is. Positive service and attitude like that requires broadcasting .

Will update at a later date, but given my experience of the attitude on the test drive and in speaking with the salesman... positive so far....

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but are a clutch and a dual mass flywheel two seperate things?.

When i had my Caddy MOT'd in May, the mechanic reckoned the clutch was on it's last legs. But i wasn't too convinced as it seemed (and still seems) fine to me with no judder or slippage. But i also queried him on something else which i had noticed, that sometimes when i start the van, there seems to be a pretty harsh clattering, but mostly it is fine, firing up just like a switch. He told me that this was because the dual mass flywheel was starting to break up, also told me that this was quite an expensive job.... Read more

Thanks again. I had a look into some DMF related issues on a few other forums, and weirdly, there was no mention of the symptoms i am getting, i.e, the occasionally 'violent' sounding start. All that i read seemed to be talking about a constant clattering, though this would sometimes be only when the car was cold, and sometimes only when in low gears or reversing uphill. One other thing which i am now wondering if it is related, is an uneven idle, like something is out of balance. Is this another symptom of DMF problems?, just so i don't start worrying it is something else!.

I have a sixteen years old BMW which is fundamentally very reliable once it gets going! The battery is a two year old Varta which is very "iffy" It charges up but does not seem to hold the charge and test show no obvious electrical leak. After a charge it dropped to 10v when (not) starting so I intend o get a new battery.

It is an 027 but still so many choices!... Read more

kiss (keep it simple)

Varta batteries are good so 2 failures makes me think that your charging system is not working correctly. Does your BMW need to be coded for the new battery? If so, that may be the problem. If a battery isn't charged properly it will fail prematurely.

Back to cars, have you considered swapping for an Amazon? Seems like it would be top of the tree!

That was the original plan, i like how the Amazon drives but it is considerably wider than the 120 series so always had reservations, and they appear to have many more issues that need fixing as they age, the biggies being the hydraulic suspension and brake booster motors, i know where to get these fixed well and cheaply (hydraulic suspension fix using Citroen C5 spheres believe it or not)....

Have just been caught (in approch road to Dartford tunnel). Doing 62 in a temporary 50. Filled in the form. Spoke with an officer who said the speed was such that I will be offered correction school, I was happy with that. However I have now recived the Notice to Prosecute and apparently my Licence was revoked in 2000! The text on the notice is not easy to understand. I called DVLA immediatly who said I was not banned. That they sent me two letters that I did not respond too (Or get!) so my licence was revoked. I cant belive I have been driving for 18 years without a Licence. So as this other "offence" has been found I will not be offered correction School. Rather I can plead Guilty by post. But I do not understand if this is just for the 62 in the 50 or they will add the Licence part as well or anything else (Insurance?).

The notice also says if I plead not guilty their costs will me a minimum of £690! ... Read more

Hi all my dad is having issues with the central locking on his cavalier. The issue is that when you lock the car with the key in the drivers lock, it locks the car then all the other locks unlock straight away Read more

When I had a Cavalier Mk 3 I had the opposite problem - unlocking with the key would keep all other doors locked.

There are two switches on the back of the the driver door lock - one for lock and the other for deadlock IIRC. I would suspect one of those for a start. You will need to remove the door card and inner seal to get at it....

At some point around christmas time I will most likley be changing my now elderly Corsa D 1.3 CDTI as this will be heading towards 130k, with the orignal clutch. I currently cover around 18 - 20k per annum usually around town and occasional trips from County Durham to Northumberland both for work and visiting relatives.

I am looking at a number of older SUV, including the second generation RAV4, Kia Sportage and the first generation Hyundai Tuscon, possibly in petrol form as i belive, and I stand to be corrected, they do not have Dual Mass Flywheel fitted or Exhaust Gas Recirculator valves. No prizes for guessing whats failing on my current car. ... Read more

Plus think of all those perfectly servicable (and probably MOTed and running) older cars that were scrapped when the government's 'scrappage scheme' was running a few years ago. What a waste just to kick start new car sales. Nothing environmentally friendly about that either.

I was still driving car transporters during that farce, the company i worked for had large numbers to shift, some of the cars i picked up it was criminal they were being scrapped, one and low owner lowish mileage cars in really good running order....

My 1999 c230k was fine just yesterday and then this morning when I started it the rpm just kept revving up past 6000 in park. so I shut it off and tried again then it did it again so I let it go and it stopped and went back down but only to 1500. When I put it in drive I can feel it trying to rev its self a little if I let go of the brakes the car will slowly start accelerating on its own. The car also doesn’t respond to the gas pedal well I can push it down and it won’t really do anything just keep jerking and I have to push the brakes extremely hard to stop the car! There is not check engine light either! Help please and thank you!

I think it’s either the Accelerator cable or the throttle body but I’m not sure. I did take out and clean the throttle body and it didn’t help Read more

I want to fit an auxiliary (leisure) battery in the boot of my vehicle. It would be easier and less intrusive if I could get it in the engine bay but alas that would be too much to ask so , boot it is. Anyone fitted one in any estate. Not just my car. I'd like some tips or advice as this is the biggest electrical project i've attempted on a car. I'm using a fridge/cooler for fishing trips and as I fish on my own in some pretty remote places I need to know my car will start and keep my bait (and my food) nice and fresh. Read more

Not a difficult job.You will need to either fabricate or buy a battery box and secure it to the rear of the car. For the wiring hook up you will need a split charge kit. something like this will do the job;www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAMPER-VAN-SELF-SWITCHING-VOLTA...T
