Hi,

If you self maintain your own car using care and the best oil/materials, how much can yu expect to lose in resale value when you come to sell? Read more

The best place to sell a home-serviced VXR or similar is probably via one of the forums or owners' clubs, where there will be plenty of similarly minded petrolheads who won't be so offended by the lack of stamps. That's particularly true if the car has been modified and isn't original anyway. Those guys will be able to tell at 100 paces whether the seller knows what they're doing or not.

I'd go further - on an enthusiasts forum you'll probably do better if it is owner-maintained than franchised dealer who are frequently called out for incompetence....

Sorry to interrupt your tea break. Has anyone told you the roads are full of pot holes and possibly lethal to anyone on two wheels?

I do appreciate you are probably watching a gripping episode of Bargain Hunt, shall I get someone to spray the holes and leave them? After a long enough wait, for a change of scenery, perhaps someone could put a set of lights there for a while then at sometime in the distant future somebody could drop some porridge with black food dye into the hole which should last long enough to take a picture and no doubt meet the current standards.... How often do developers get away with reducing the proportion of smaller, affordable houses in a project? Why do council planners allow developers to build 80% 4 -bed houses, 15 % of 3-bed and throw in 5% of 2-bed ones when the original plan was for 20 % 2-bed?

Clearly builders make more profit for their 'prestige' and 'luxury' homes (not that the build quality is often the best)....

Hi all, My daughter had an accident back in November. She hit a leasehold car from the back doing 5MPH at a junction. Her car recieved minimal damage to her bumper from the tow bar but the car she hit had no signs of anything. When the leasehold car was taken back the company were informed someone had nudged the back but no damage was evident.

My daughter has just had her insurance renewel in and it has gone up by £850 which was a complete shock and her 2yr NCD has been taken. After talking to her insurers ( general accident ) they said a case has been opened and they have no fixed time for it to be closed incase a claim is made against her. ... Read more

Further illustration of why most people simply don't bother telling their insurers. Perhaps if those insurers would take the time to learn what 'no claim' means and stop shafting people, more drivers would be honest about it like they're supposed to be!

Hi all I previously wrote a thread about what fuel next?

But after delving into the best auto boxes for my type of car, budget and driving it got me thinking....

Is it worth having an automatic box for 10k miles a year in 75% stop/start traffic and the rest for family
rural trips and holidays.

I have read reports on the best type of automatics but when you read into them they are exactly efficient and long term reliable.

Who do I believe?

I read that CVTs are the best for my driving, so with my budget and car type it’s a Toyota, Honda or Nissan. Then some CVTs are better than others.....

It just seems like I’ll end up buying a manual...... with a soft clutch...

I've driven both manual and auto cars, but only ever owned manual cars. My dad and one of my brothers (live in London) both prefer automatics, in part as a response the constant stop aspect of driving in the city.

When hiring overseas (espcially left hand drive cars) I prefer automatics as it reduces one thing to consider when finding my way around. My present car is a Seat Toledo, I did consider the automatic version and would have liked the larger 1.4 engine that it comes with, but I have read too many horror reports about the VW autos to have confidence to spend my money on such. As for clutch wear, both my two previous cars were disposed of with original clutches at 172k and 180k miles respectively, both were Nissan Primera cars....

I agree that cleaner diesels are possible but the downside is the complexity of the systems to achieve cleansing.

This was under £100 when I bought it a few weeks ago ... is it the best - I don't know, anyway what is "best"?? Certainly it' not a 360 unit and I run it off a powered USB port so it only works when the engine is on (but could be hard wired if you so desire)

This car should be fitted with a basic self-diagnostic function for the abs system. There should be a 2 pin diagnostic plug located up behind the glovebox area. Bridge out the 2 pins and the abs light should flash a "blink code". Usually on these it is a faulty wheel speed sensor. Sadly, removing them from the hub is another mission.
