Resurrecting an old thread to say that things have changed a bit. It's worth googling for P2P car hire agencies such as jointhefleet.com in Dublin and Ireland or there are three in the UK (Or four. There is one that just operates at a couple of airports - so google "P2P car hire" + "name of airport").

If the question had been Cork, there is a firm called Great Island car hire which can drive to meet you at the airport - a rather tricky thing to organise if you're expecting to use one of the car hire desks, and then find that you have to ring Great Island to ask where they'll park and how long they'll be. There is a tourist information desk that can find their number if you don't have it already.

Great Island are a bit cheaper than the big brands and didn't try to find faults as an excuse to charge more at the end of my trip. They even put cheap hubcaps on with cable ties so that, if I broke a hubcap, replacement wouldn't cost much.

I notice the price of diesel cars has dropped significantly.
Not only has the premium on list price been wiped out but many are now cheaper than the petrol equivalent.
Especially 1-2 yr old models. Granted these are not Euro 6. But at this age you get the benefit of warranty, mpg and torque AND pay less.
A win win maybe? Read more

This has been a good discussion, but in view of today's Governmenrt announcement, can we now use the 'ZZZZ electric...' thread started by Fisherman's Bend, rather than have two similar threads going at the same time. Thanks.

Hi all, I am an infrequent poster but regular reader and really enjoy the sound advice people give to each other on this site.
Now my grovelling is over I do have a question I hope people can help me with please.
On the rear doors to my 2016 Outback, on the bottom of the doors is a thick but short (stubby) pin with a flat head that fits into a slot when te doors are closed.
I have never seen this design feature on another car and wondered if anyone could enlighten me to why it's there and what it's purpose is.
Many thanks in advance. Read more

Similar seen on my Mk2 Skoda Octavia. I assumed it was to help keep the doors closed in a side impact.

Yes you will get a reminder and if you have the old paper licence you will need to fill in the form and attach a new photo cost £5 in the booth. You will have to declare any relevant heath issues and get the photo authenticated by someone. My reminder was received some 10 weeks before the renewal date so would advise you to wait until about 2 weeks before renewal as you will have to do it again in another 3years!

You can apply at any time within the 3 months before it expires - the new one expires the day before your 73rd birthday so you don't lose any time.

No individual better personifies Britains booming motor market than Ling Valentine, being the countries possible biggest shifters of cars and selling allegedly £85 million worth of vehicles.

She claims to undercut the competition by 35per cent .

But has anyone any experience of buying from Ling?

A friend took his car to a national garage chain to have a new clutch fitted. A week later he was unable to get the car to engage in gear.

He got it back to them and was told the gear linkage was loose and these things happen. I am suspicious of the standard of fitting the exhaust. Am I right to be ? or could there be another reason ? Read more

OOOps - very red face. Apologies. It was the clutch. I am not mechanical but it seems to me when the clutch was fitted it was not reconnected carefully enough. However, don't want to be critical if it could be another plausible cause.

I had 3 Honda Accords over a 9 year period. Company cars, petrol and not once did I struggle for access or egress. I am 6'2" and not a bean pole either. Used then on match days for ferrying players around. Not small players either. The other thing is I never had an ounce of trouble with any of them. No repairs or breakdowns. When we went diesel I could have wept, Honda did not do one then. Cheers Concrete

It might be helpful - thinking particularly of Sorceress who is looking for a small automatic - if we knew which cars have torque-converter autos or CVT (generally reliable) and which have semi-automatics (jerky, unreliable or both). SLO will know this I'm sure, but all views welcome!

From what I know, Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Mazdas, JLRs, Kias, Hyundais and most other big cars have TQ autos, and newer Hondas have CVT. Only the biggest Audis have CVT, otherwise it's DSG throughout the VW Group.... Read more

I am in Australia. 85% of new cars sold here are automatics and that percentage is increasing every year. Many models are only available with autos. Lots of people have auto only licences so companies buy auto cars for their fleets. It is getting hard to sell secondhand manual cars.

I am running the IOS11 beta software on my iPhone and the HJ app will not work, I have been getting the message that the app needs updating for sometime on the previous software, but now it just won’t work. Are there any plans to update the app.
I currently use the webpage saved to my home screen, but it’s far from being as convenient as the app. Read more
