Last year due to a van re designing our Volvo we were loaned...don't ask me why.... a brand new Mecedes S class 3.2 diesel. It has comfort, enough power for anybody, a boot you could get a small sofa in and everything seemed excellent quality. Economy was v good for a large car too. If money were no object I'd have one tomorrow but the thought of the bills would keep me awake at night. Read more

In terms of all round suitability for its job as well as providing great driving enjoyment, I nominate two cars:-

  • Ford S-Max
  • Subaru Forester XT

Why? Well the S-Max has the ride, handling and steering to rival cars which are much smaller, shorter, lower and lighter as well as having an excellent driving position which means getting in and out is case of sliding your bottom rather than dropping in or climbing out. It really is the car Ferrari would make if they built a seven seater. I 'only' had the 2.0TDCi with six speed auto, but fully optioned up as mine was, it was a luxurious car that did me very well for five years. The five pot T5 would have been interesting but it was only manual not auto. I would have another today without doubt, if I needed a large family car. Having driven all the competitors, it was just streets ahed of them all....

OK, heres what happened.

Pulling into the end parking slot in B&Q's car park, the front passenger side wing bottom scraped the kerb. This ripped of the inner wheel arch liner, and in the process pulled the blue ABS sensor plug and socket apart. the liner ended up under the wheel... Read more

How would you like it if your new £200k Aston had been repainted due to the damage?, would you accept it?. Bear in mind, these cars are built to order, this example will have been someone's choice of colour/trim.

Plus, it's a completely new Aston, first for donkeys years, and there is quite a demand, and quite a wait for your order. So in order to keep the customers, currently waiting, happy, they are not just going to paint it and flog it to whoever wants it.

I'm a first-time buyer who is looking for an automatic car suitable for running around in locally. The car will be driven frequently, but it wont be driven over long distances.

I've come across the following 4 cars which are presumably reliable and appropiate for my requirements, but would like more opinions before I make my FINAL decision.... Read more

I agree - the Mazda by quite a margin out of the four. It's quite a bit newer than the others, and has moderate mileage, not too high and not too low. And Mazdas (petrol ones) have a better reputation for reliabilty than the others.

'One former keeper' might mean that it's had two owners (current and former) but for a 2008/09 car that's still reasonable....

The general view on here is, I believe, that brake fluid changes every 2 years is just a profit generating exercise by main dealers when in fact the fluid only really needs changing if the moisture content is too high.

So does anyone here own/use a brake fluid tester? Sealey sell one which does a boil test £400, so out of the question for DIY use, but Amazon have basic versions for under £10 including a Silverline one for £7 which looks identical to a Sealey branded one for nearer £30.... Read more

<< ... a previous owner had the discs skimmed. As the pads wore one piston came out further than intended and locked skew-whiff, putting gentle pressure on the pad. >>

That sounds like rather more than a 'skim'. I did once have disks skimmed on a fairly young 205 about 1990, after pulsation developed while braking. It cured the problem, but it slowly returned, so I assumed the disk metal was of variable hardness....

I have seem to come across a very reasonably priced car but I am a little suspicious as it seems to be on the market for substantially less than other vehicles of the same model and specification.

I looked into the MOT history and had come across numerous advisory notices but due to my complete lack of relevant knowledge and understanding I'm not aware of how severe the previous faults and damages are, nor the chances of them reoccuring, nor how costly they may be to repair.... Read more

It doesn't necessarily follow that this car is dodgy or dangerous, though as has been said, there are plenty of others to choose from. Maybe the owner has been trying to sell for a while (because there are plenty to choose from) and has dropped the price. It's certainly possible that there has been some damage somewhere, but the only way to find out is to have a look and ask the right questions....

If it's as good and competitively priced as expected, I'll be queuing up with my money for one......it would be rude not to! Read more

Hi,

I recently had a problem with my car and had to disconnect the battery but it has reset the radio and I have to put in a code. I found some codes on here in an earlier topic but none of them have worked. I'm reluctant to pay or enter my card details into a radio code website. ... Read more

Hello all. I'd like to get some opinions on a possible change of car please from the knowledgable folk in HJ's back room.

I'm comtemplating replacing my 2009 Fiat Bravo (1.4 petrol, 108k miles) with either a 2014 Alfa Giulietta (1.4 TB or 1.6 JTDM) or a 2014 Peugeot 308 HDI 92. I've done a bit of research on both cars and like the look of both, but am swaying towards the Peugeot at the moment as it should be the cheaper of the two to run. My budget is in the region of £8,000 and the Peugeot fits nicely into this for an 'Active' HDI model.... Read more

I currently have a Leon 1.4 Tsi 150 Fr Sc.
I am currently getting 52mpg and still does 0-60 in 7.8 secs. Has loads of low down Torque so drives like a diesel.
Ride is good on I either 17 or 18s. Handles well and loads of kit if you get the tec pack.
Interior looks better in the flesh but still a bit dull but no squeaks or rattles.
To be honest, one of the best cars I've had.
Swapped the Guilietta for it as I do 18k a year, I was only getting around 35mpg and didn't want a diesel again.
