The last of the escorts were highly rated by the motoring press and scored well in consumer surveys. So by all accounts they drove better, were better built, and more reliable than earlier versions (and I am taking about the mk5?, '90>).

I bought a new Golf GTi in 1989 and kept it for 7 years and did 113,000 miles in it. About 5 years after I sold it I spotted it in Asda car park and it still looked OK but some muppet had put big bumpers on it and painted other plastic bits white which were peeling very nicely.
Never gave it a thought until late 2015 when I discovered the DVLA MOT and tax site and saw it was still on the road. Posted on various Golf/GTi forums but no reposnse....
I had overheating and a burning smell from the passenger side brakes two weeks ago, I got the local garage to check and they said it needed pads and discs and it didn't look like anything was seized. It's a lot better but still gets hotter on the passenger side, I took it back and they thought it might be the flexi hose, but when they inspected that they said it was ok and it needs a new caliper.
Does that sound reasonable? I wish that they had checked it properly at first and I would have thought they would have been able to see that the caliper was seized.... Read more
Not always.Calipers can very temperamental.sometimes they stick, sometimes they don't.Having said that, the fact that one side was hotter than the other could be a clue.On the plus side, parts for these are very cheap,so not too much of an issue.

The government has urged councils to remove humps and cushions as they double harmful vehicle emissions. Here in sunny Basingstoke our County council has installed some of the daftest items of road furniture imaginable. On a country road a protrusion with a priority indication has drivers stopping for little reason. Thousands have been spent on hump removal and replacement. There is nothing anywhere near. Our new roundabouts have multiple lanes which have vehicles changing lanes in confusion with dotted lines, arrows, and traffic lights in profusion. Anyone any idea on what damage humps and cushions do to cars? Read more
...has anyone driven through Chinnor in recent times?.... ...and Nettlebed a bit further along!.... ...and, and Ledborough Lane in Beaconsfield!! Jeez, all delightful places in their own right but humps-a-plenty all placed equidistant to each other so as soon as you just got into 2nd you have to immediately get out of it!!! This country...
I once thought (wrongly) that we had sensible and caring councillors running our councils that actually cared for its constituents, when in fact they are a bunch of non listening non caring (apart from wallets) non sensicle idiots who have not a clue about local life and the air they breathe.
So I very much doubt, like my council anything will happen to rid our roads of these stupid humps and cushions...
Just love the presentation of this video. Don't think I'll bother buying one though, costs more than my house

As for why he doesn't buy a newer car is because he doesn't see the point of investing more than this in a car....
