I'm a first time buyer who has very little knowledge about cars and their configurations and would like some suggestions for a 'reliable car' with an automatic transmission and with an engine size between 1.6-2.0L, and for less than £3000.
So far I've been suggested (by no car enthusiasts) the Ford Focus Zetec 1.6L and the BMW 320D 2.0L which both seem appealing enough, but I don't want to make any decisions without being consulted by someone who's more informed.
I'm 23 years old and have held a license for only 4 years with no no claims and so I'm completely aware the cost of insurance will be considerably high so a smaller car would be more preferable (I know I can't be too picky as my criteria is very limiting but I'd also prefer something very standard-looking and not too garish or just ugly).
I look forward to hearing from you enthusiasts!

Whatever you seriously look at...do your research.!...and take someone with you who has some degree of understanding and knowledge.
Doesn't need to be an "expert"...just needs common sense and the ability to cover the basics....
I currently drive a 2014 Kia C'eed 1.6CRDi auto. It went for its 3rd annual service and first MOT last week. Whilst there, I got chatting to a salesman, as you do, and ended up interested in a new Sportage.
Fast forward a few days, I've used Car Wow to secure a 13% discount on a new Sportage '2' petrol, from a different dealer from where I had the C'eed serviced. I only did 9000 between annual services in the C'eed so diesel no longer seems necessary. Gone are the days are commuting 500 miles a week, but I'd grown used to diesel so that's what I bought. Recent reports of diesel falling out of favour and ever increasing complicated engines have lead to think petrol is the (immediate) future. ... Read more
It comes with three free services, so all good there.

Living in rural Dorset, with luck I may never have to sail from Dover again - but the de-restriction will be good news for those who do.

Asking DVLA may be your best bet.
I'm looking at buying a cheap second-hand car and a 06 Mazda 3 1.6 has caught my eye for around £1500. I'm looking for something reliable that I can basically run into ground over the next few years. There appears to be a lot of a rust / corrosion between the rear wheels of this one, which to my untrained eye looks bad, but I'm not certain. The underside of my Punto of a similar age looks nothing like this, but I wonder if this could be quite superficial. On the other hand, I know these cars don't have a great reputation on the corrosion front.
Here is a photo:... Read more
Thanks a lot for all these replies. As it sounds like it's priced a little dear and I'm looking for something with a bit less risk I will pass on it and keep looking for something better. Very interesting to know about treating the rust to prolong the life.
My locks, (no central locking), were all getting sloppy so I bought a box-set from VW comprising all cylinders/barrels, the reader coil and pre-connected electronic box and two ignition keys. Job done? Well it started OK and I drove it for a few weeks till I mislaid my keys, so got out the second supplied new ignition key; engine starts and runs for 1 second then dies. Found my keys and the other new key still works.
Despite all components being supplied as a box-set, with lots of numbers and stickers to show all components match, WV main dealer insist that the non functioning key must need re-coding at a minimum cost of £75 + vat and it could be more as it may take time to get their current software to work with this old vehicle.... Sounds like a cheap deal to me.Unless you can find a local auto locksmith to do it,may not be much difference in price.

Hi there.
I was driving my Amarok yesterday with when it went into limo mode and a few warning lights flashed up. This being the engine, coil and DPF lights. The "change air filter" warning also came up on the display. ... Read more
DPF's are not covered under warranty because inappropriate usage will wreck them. If it does really need a forced regen that is proof its not being used in a way compatible with a modern diesel with a DPF. What type of trips does the vehicle do?
Air filters are not covered since they are a service item and get dirty as you use the car....

Just resurrected this matter with M-B Customer Services and the reply was "I understand that you have read of similar experiences from other drivers and I am sorry that this is not something that I am able to advise further on"
It's a big cover up about a subject they want to bury. The software 'fix' is now two years old and they are relying on people taking their cars in for servicing and then surreptitiously modifying them without owners' authorisation....
