I'm considering buying a used E-class estate. It was first registered on 4/6/15 and serviced (at a MB dealer) on 26/5/16. It is being sold at an independent garage and has just had their standard vehicle check last month, but the 2nd annual service remains outstanding.

If I buy the car, I plan to have it serviced at a MB dealer ASAP. Do you think I'll have any problems regarding the remaining manufacturer's warranty due to the ~7 week delay in the second annual service?

Many thanks,

Rob. Read more

Railroad.

Personally I'd leave it. Independent garages aren't set up to service and maintain modern cars, and certainly not a high spec one like that. You'll find yourself throwing money in all directions as soon as the car goes wrong. Consider lease hiring a car instead. It's definitely the way forward. You have fixed monthly costs and maintenance won't be your problem.

Hi all,

A newbie here and based on the lurking I've done here over the past couple of weeks, I hope you'll be able to clarify a couple of things.... Read more

No idea if the VW have changed since we last looked but to get the 1.4 TSi 140/150 PS you had to buy GT spec which includes ride spoiling Carlos Fandango wheelsand lowered sports suspension. Despite it saying it had climate in the spec it has what VW call "manual climate" which is actually aircon, propper climate is extra.

You could get a Audi A3 with the 140/150 PS engine with propper sized tyres, normal suspension and full climate for less money....

Question Ford Ka - Tyres
Drivethru

Just looking at buying tyres online for the first time and on one site it asks if you want summer, winter or all season tyres. I've never thought about this before, the ones I was thinking about getting were Dunlop Street Response 2, they are classed as summer tyres. Do you think they are ok for city driving all year round? The car wouldn't be used in bad winter conditons. Thanks. Read more

City car for city use then summer tyres will be fine.

Same car, further development! ! When engine is cold, it revs fine and goes into gear forward or reverse, though I still have it parked because when the engine has been running for 10 to 15 mins and warmed up sufficiently, it still revs? Good power etc but only in Neutral or Park, put it in drive or reverse and no power, it just idles, move it to neutral or park, revs fine, perplexed, any ideas greatly appreciated, Brian

Try to adjust the controls for screen vent on dash or to your feett, or change the fan speed, Some time you need to change these settings dependent on the weather conditions. Near impossible when you're driving.

I think your reply is to the other post about climate control. This question was about no power or revs except in neutral.

Hi, just purchased an 02 Honda HRV with an after market radio, When I put the key into the ignition and switch on, MW is fine but when I turn the ignition further to start the car, all I get is a whining sound. Any ideas why? Read more

Does anyone know why so many infotainment systems in cars look like a last minute add on to a design? They just look like they've been hastily stuck on. Read more

Absolutely true. When we look at basic controls such as indicators, lights, horn, flasher and wipers, every manufacturer has adopted a pretty standard set-up by now and a blindfolded driver could find all these controls inside an unfamiliar car in seconds. Apart from the main light switch (rotary dial for some, stalk twist for others) there are no truly wacky designs these days. It was a sad day in motoring history when Citroën ditched the crazy but strangely functional modules on the CX and "monopod" on the Visa and GSA: a world away from the truly awful efforts of the Subaru XT or the first Seat Ibiza.

My daughter has a Nissan Platina (Renault Symbol in disguise) with a 1.6L engine. It's an automatic.

The problem is that it will not crank at all when hot, starts up perfectly when cold or cool and can be driven all day long.

Repairs done so far:

- Replaced battery
- Replaced starter and cabling
- Installed heat protection on starter
- Swapped around relays in the engine bay

Suspect: Some sensor inhibiting cranking?

Even if hot and will no start, the fan seems not to be running either, until once today, but did not repeat.

Instrument cluster temp gauge seems to work just fine

All help appreciated.

The press has been fulminating about smart/slippery car salesmen who sell to young people with the minimum monthly payment and who never own the vehicle. Perhaps that explains/reinforces my prejudice about drivers, mainly young men, who toot the horn rather than think whether they are to blame for a bad situation - like the one who followed me through the traffic lights and tooted when I had to wait while the lights went onto red before I succeeded in turning right. I was second in line and the traffic was busy that day.

On another occasion my car was at the second fuel pump, I was paying for petrol in the kiosk and the driver at the front pump, having paid, drove away. A young man in a BMW X5 500 drove by my old car into the front pump position and filled up. I never was able to afford a car so expensive, let alone one with so oversize an engine. Do the BRs think that the young man was a victim of the s/s salesmen ? There used to be one of those irritating notices in the back widscreen of old cars, "I know it's old, but it's paid for". Advertisers know their game, and their targets.

You have to feel sorry for youngsters, who unless they happen to have sensible parents or mentors that they will listen to, are easy pickings in so many things, they get precious little common sense education from the state system....

Does anyone have any experience of selling via Tootle? Selling my (nearly) three-year olds Mini Cooper with lots of extras; it cost over 23K but have only been offered £10,200 for part exchange with Mini and £10,800 with Audi. Has moved me to tears as only 6,000 on clock and in perfect condition. Sign. Read more

True. More often than not PCP or contract hire are the way to go with high spec cars. That or buying them once someone else has taken the bulk of the value out of it.

First I've heard of it on an i20 and I flogged a few so this is helpful info. Electrically and mechanically they're usually no trouble. Water leaks in the boot are the only reoccurring issue I've had. Do you mind saying how much it cost you to fix in total?
