If you are not moving and out of gear and then press the clutch pedal in, does the noise change at all ?

Out on my motorbike the other evening heading into town on a big wide dual carriageway, three lanes in both directions and a 15m central reservation Its in a built up area so its a 30mph limit but there is great temptation to speed because its so wide and straight, 30mph feels like walking pace. I know this road very well and have driven it 1000 times.

I pull up at the stop line in the middle lane at the traffic lights for a crossroad and behind there is the angry sound of a car horn, a Clio has just cut the nose of a car by pulling from the inside lane to the middle lane, then a couple of seconds later another car horn as the Clio moves to the outside lane. They pull up beside me on my bike, I could tell right away they were looking for a race, silly boys. It was an older Clio with big alloys and drainpipe exhaust with two young men wearing baseball caps turned backwards. You get the picture. The lights go green and we are off, I just keep pace with them at first then pass them slightly then let them get ahead till 75m clear of the junction I close the throttle and let them rocket ahead engine screaming. They go straight through the speed camera and get a flash. I passed them further up the road going well within the speed limit and looking distinctly sheepish.... Read more

In response to GB's surprise (amazement) ... I have to say that I also drove them - for something like 27 yrs - but did my training (in London) in 1975 ... and don't have any recollection of being told to adopt the practices being spoken of. However at the time of my training I suspect things were different to current practice. The stuff 'argybargy' is talking about is unknown to me. And, equally, refresher courses weren't undertaken either throughout my time (I retired fifteen yrs ago).

Rightly or wrongly, at that time, our training was teaching you how to drive an HGV at normal road speeds and the aim was to pass a test which gave you an HGV3 and didn't involve blue light driving. You picked that up as you went along after finishing the course and having returned to your station ... whereupon you started off by driving back FROM incidents at normal road speed and built up to driving TO incidents when the officer in charge deemed you ready. I'm not saying this was right but that was how it was then....

On my 1.9 Tdi 105bhp Golf there is a quite loud tapping noise when revved over idle (no sound on idle). I think it is a problem relating to the cam, the car has covered 100k

I have removed the rocker cover too get a better look and all off the tappets look to be set at the same height....however one looks very flush to the base - Could this be the cause of the noise???... Read more

I would take a closer look at something other than the camshaft. Something like the flywheel.
You cand get a better feedback of where the sound is coming from by taking a woden broomstick handle or something shorter and press one side on a location near where you think the sound might be coming from, and the other end on your ear.
Be carefull not to put the handle near moving parts as you might get injured

I have a second car on which a separate NCB has to be built up. as part of the process of looking at the market when the insurance came up, I wanted to know what rate of NCB Churchill were applying, the renewal notice simply said 3 years. My policy refers to NCB building at the current scheduled rate, and the Churchill website does not show any schedule of NCB. I rang the dog and got a reply that amazed me, they would only tell me the rate applying if I cancelled my policy.

Was the dog having a bad day or is this Chucrchill's usual policy? If it is, what is the point of it and do other companies have the same, because it is not something I have ever come across before? Read more

Emissions controls may play a part here but this talk about comparing a well run in older car with a new model reminds me of a drag race I watched once on a motoring program of two Mk II VW Golf GTi's in the early 90's, one new with delivery mileage and the other with 70k plus on the clock but otherwise identical and the well run in car was substantially faster. Engines are always at their best with upwards of 30k under their belts. Another reason I prefer used to new.

I didn't think of that! This Focus only had 1300 miles on when I picked it up on Wednesday (it now has 1500...).

My old Golf had 43,000 on it......

Volvo has announced that from 2019 they won't make any more diesel or petrol cars, it's eletric or hybrid from then. France wants to clear the country of petrol and diesel by 2040. So when there are millions of electric cars around we are going to need 20 more power stations according to the press to cope with the demand for electric. How will a three hundred mile journey work out? Charge before setting off then two very lengthy charges en route if you can get to a plug. No petrol or diesel tax for HM Gov so what scheme will they come up with to replace the cash lost? Electric equals almost silent running so you'll never hear the car that comes towards you? What next? electric aircraft? ships? They pollute plenty. Read more

Whatever happens, you can be sure it'll cost us more than we're paying now.

A fair few years ago my dad had a Renault Megane Scenic. He didn't keep it for long when he found out there is a significant problem with the design of the offside drive shaft. There is a splined coupling joining two sections of the shaft together. Sometimes known as a 'Muff' cooupling. The splines on this coupling shred meaning drive is lost on that side.

I'm currently considering buying a 2014/2015 Clio 1.5 dCI. Can anybody help me confirm if the Clio has the same problem as the Megane?... Read more

These pulsing, chasing or whatever you want to call them indicators are nothing new. I saw these in the US at least 20 years ago. Obviously they weren't LED but the idea is the same.
